To all 7.0720772 it may concern;
Be it known that I, RAY C. SIMPsoN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Dallas, in the county of Dallas and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in l Vater-Cocks for VVater Heaters, of which the following is such a full, clear, and exact description as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has for its primary object the provision of means whereby a waterheater will be automatically drained of water when the water supply is cut off at the main or house supply pipe and with this object in view, and such other incidental objects as will hereinafter appear, the invention consists in certain novel features of the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings as will be hereinafter first fully described and then particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a water heater having my present invention applied thereto, Fig. 2 is a vertical section of my improved water cock; Fig. 3 is a detail view of the plunger or valve showing the position when the cock is closed and the main water supply pipe is open; Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the position of the valve when the water supply is cut off; Fig. 5 is a similar view showing the position of the parts when the valve is held open, and Fig. 6 is a detail plan view of the plunger guide.
The water heater, 1, preferably rests on a supported by brackets, 3, but it may, of course, be arranged on any convenient support. ater is supplied to the heater through a cock, 4, and circulates in the heater so as to be acted upon by the flame and heat from a gas-burner therein which is supplied through a gascock, 5, the stems of the valves in the gas and water cocks being coupled together, as shown at 6, so that neither cock can be opened or closed without simultaneously opening or closing the other cock. The construction of the heater and the gas-cock, however, form no part of my present invention and further detailed reference thereto is not necessary herein.
The casing, 7, of the water-cock is disposed vertically on the heater and its lower end communicates with the water main or house supply pipe. The stem, 8, enters the casing through the side of the same and eX tends horizontally across the same, being mounted to rotate in a stufiing box, 9, on one side of the casing and in a bearing or circular seat, 10, formed on the opposite wall. The stem is formed with a crank or eccentric portion, 11, near its end, which passes trans I versely through a slot, 12, in the plunger or valve. This plunger or valve consists of an upper flat pl ate-like portion, 13,containing the slot 12, a substantially cylindrical portion, 14, depending from the lower end of the upper flat portion, and a horizontally disposed head or disk portion, 15, at the lower end of said cylindrical portion. The cylindrical portion of the valve fits closely in and plays through a horizontal partition or seat, 16, in the casing and is provided with suitable openings or grooves, 17, in its sides for the passage of the water. The horizontal disk or head 15 projects beyond the cylindrical body 14 and is arranged to fit closely against the under side ofthe partition 16 and cut off the flow through the same. The flat portion, 13, of the valve plays in notches or guideways, 18, in an annular shoulder or flange, 19, in the upper portion of the casing, the concave edges of the shoulder between said notches presenting open spaces through which the water may flow on its way into the heater.
The slot 12 in the valve, it will be noticed, has two branches, 20, 21, forming a right angle, the vertical branch 20 being near one edge of the plate and parallel therewith.
When the cooks are closed and the water I turned on at the house supply pipe, the valve will assume the position shown in Fig. 3, in l which the crank 11 is disposed vertically and registers with the vertical branch of the slot. 1 The pressure of the water, in this position of or partition 16 and holds it firmly against the same so that the flow of water into the heater is prevented. Should it be desired to admit water into the heater the stem is turned forward and downward thereby causing the crank 11 to ride upon the lower wall of the horizontal branch of the slot and depress the valve as clearly shown in Fig. 5, the engagement of the crank and the slot holding the valve open, as will be readily understood. In this position of the valve, as shown in Fig. 4, the vertical branch of the slot engages over the crank of the valve stem and prevents rotation of the same as any attempt to rotate it will simply cause the valve to bind against the side walls of its seat without producing any lifting of the same. Consequently, the valve can not again be manipulated until the water is admitted through the house supply pipe and its pressure carries the disk against the seat and brings the horizontal branch of the slot intoregistry with the crank. Inasmuch as the gas cock is coupled to the water cook, the heater can not be used wflpen the house or main water supply is out o Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is 1. The combination of the water cock casing, a valve therein having a slot provided with vertical and horizontal branches and having a disk or head at its lower end arranged to bear against the under side of its seat, and an operating stem rotatably mounted in the casing and having an eccentric portion playing in the branched slot in the valve the length of the slot exceeding the 2. The combination of the water cock casing, a valve seat therein, a guideway in the casing above the valve seat, a valve having an upper portion playing in the guideway and provided with a branched slot, and a disk at its lower end arranged to bear against the under side of the valve seat, and an operating stem having a crank engaging the branched slot the length of the branches of the slot being greater than the thickness of that portion of the crank which passes through the same whereby when the crank is disposed longitudinally of the casing a free movement of the valve will be permitted.
3. The combination of the water cock casing, a valve seat therein, a valve comprising a cylindrical body playing through said seat and having grooves in its sides, a disk-like head on the lower end of said body arranged to bear against the under side of the valve seat, and a plate-like portion rising from the upper end of said body and provided with a right-angled slot having vertical and horizontal branches, and a rotatable stern mounted transversely in the casing and having a crank engaging said slot, the said crank being in registry with the vertical branch of the slot when the valve is closed.
