EZRA O. SMITH, OF GALESBURG, ILLINOIS.
MEANS FOR OPERATING PUMPS- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 21, 1907.
Application filed March 28, 1906. $erial No. 308.540.
'To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, EZRA 0. S ITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Galesburg, in the county of Knox, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Operating Pumps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to pumps and more particularly to the operating mechanism therefor and the primary object of the invention is to provide a construction of operating mechanism, which may be placed upon the market and applied to any of the ordinary forms of pumps now in use.
A further object of the invention is to pro- Vide an operating mechanism that will obviate the use of pump handles and the undesirable features cornmon thereto.
In the accompanying drawings :-Figure 1 is a front elevation of a pump embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation in detail of one side of my pump operating mechanism. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the opposite side thereof, and Fig. 4 is a detail vertical sectional view therethrough.
Referring more specifically to the drawings, the numeral 5 denotes the pump casing, 6 the pump rod, and 7 the cap for the casing, all of which are of the ordinary construction.
An oblong frame 8 is provided at its.lower end with a pair of spaced apertured ears 9 between which is received the upper apertured end of the pump rod 6, a bolt 10 being passed through the apertures in the said ears and the pump rod, to connect the frame therewith. The inner edges of the sides and ends of the frame are provided with a continuous flange which is located at a point equi-distant I The inner edges of the sides and ends of the frame to one side of the flange 11 are plain while the said edges upon the opposite side of the flange are provided with a continuous series of rack teeth 12 for a purpose to be hereinafter described. i
Extending downwardly and upwardly from the upper and lower ends of the frame respectively are bowed arms 13 which are connected at their ends to a plate 14 and' serve to support the same. drawings the said arms project from the same side of the frame, and that, the side adj acent the rack teeth 12, and support the said plate in spaced relation to and in alinement with the flange 11, the space between the flange and the said plate being the same throughout.
Mounted in a bearing bracket 15 upon the cap 7 is a shaft 16 which is provided beyond the cap with a hand wheel 17 by means of which the shaft may be rotated. The oppo-. site end of the said shaft projects between the plate 14 and flange 11 and is provided upon its extreme end with a pinion 18 which meshes with the rack teeth 12.
Mounted upon the shaft 16 upon the opposite side of the flange and plate to thepinion 18 is a roller 19 which contacts with the plain inner edges of the sides and ends of the frame and serves to equalize the strain upon the frame and plate and also to prevent movement of the shaft to dis-engage the pinion from its rack.
From the foregoing it will be readily understood that by revolving the wheel 17, the shaft 16 will be rotated together with its pinion .18 which will cause the frame to oscillate vertically and reciprocate the pump rod, 6.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim, is
A device of the class described comprising an open frame provided with a continuous flange, a continuous rack formed upon the frame to one side of the flange, a web plate, arms connecting the frame and the web plate and supporting the same with its edges in spaced relation to the flange, said frame and web being integrally connected, a shaft arranged to travel between the edges of the flange and the plate, a pinion carried by the shaft and meshing with the rack, and a roller carried by the shaft and arranged. to travel upon that portion of the frame which lies at the other side of the flange to the rack.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
EZRA 0. SMITH.
