UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID C. WALLING, OF KENDALLVILLE, INDIANA.
WINDMILLE-PUMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 232,577, dated September 21, 1880,
Application filed March 31, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DAVID C. WALLING, of Kendallville, in the county of Noble and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Windmill-Pumps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view, and Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 00 m, Fig, 2.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to that class of windmill-pumps which are also adapted to be operated by a handle; and it consists in a novel construction and arrangement of parts, whereby the construction is simplified and oscillating motion of the handle prevented, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents the pump, and B the piston-rod, the upward extension of which forms the connectingrod by which a windmill may operate the pump. 0 is the handle, which is pivoted upon a bolt, D, journaled'in boxes or rollers E E, which have a horizontally-sliding movement in the slots F F, formed in brackets G G, at the upper end of the pump. The handle is pivoted in the usual manner to the piston-rod atH. ThebracketsGGconverge at theirupper ends, so as to form a bearing, K, for the upper end of the piston-rod. The latter being thus guided, the necessity of links or other connecting or guiding devices is obviated.
It will be seen that by reason of the construction just described the fulcrum of the handle-lever, when the latteris operated, has a horizontal reciprocating movement, enabling the handle to be worked up and down. with the same case as if the fulcrum were stationary, the advantage of which over the usual oscillating handle movement will be readily seen. The construction is simple and inexpensive, and the device strong and durable.
I am aware of the English Patent No. 13,188 of 1850, in which is shown a piston'rod operated by handles pivoted upon bolts which slide in horizontal slots. In this case, however, the brackets having the said slots are separate from each other, (two handles being used,) and.
also from a third central bracket having a bearing for the piston-rod, thus greatly complicating the construction and adding to the cost. The sliding boxes D, in which the bolt upon which the handle is pivoted is journaled, are also lacking in the said English patent.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The combination, in a windmill-pump, of the brackets G G, having bearing K and horizontal slots F F, boxes or rollers E E, sliding in said slots, handle (3, pivoted upon a bolt, D, journaled in said boxes, and the piston-rod B, sliding in bearing K, all arranged and operating substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and specified. I
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
