To au whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, FREDERICK WILLIAM ORTH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Meat-Chopping Machines, of which the following is a speciiication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings as constituting a part thereof.
My invention has for its object to obtain a machine, which shall embody the features Aand combinations hereinafter described and claimed, with the end in view of obtaining an efficient device, which is convenient to use in butchershops and restaurants, and also for family purposes. Furthermore, a machine liclivhich may be built and sold at a reasonable ure. i gIn the drawings, Figure 1, is a front elevation of my machine 5 Fig. 2, is an elevation looking in the direction pointed by the arrow, shown in Fig, 1; Fig. 3, is a partial plan section taken on a line A-A, of Fig. 2; Fig. 4, is a plan section on a line B, of Fig. l; Figs. 5 and 6, are details of the hanger h; Figs. 7 and 8, are details of the pitman, operating the lever o,- Fig. 9, is an enlarged section of the bearing for the reciprocating rod g, and Fig 10, is a perspective of one of the knives r. The letters designate the parts referred to. My machine comprises a base consisting of a semi-circular casing a, made of sheet d iron and provided with a flange-like bottom edge a, perforated to receive screws by which to fasten the same upon a table or other support. On the back of the casing is riveted a box b, in which to receive and adjustably support the standard c.
The standard is arranged to be vertically adjusted, so as to properly position the knives with respect to the chopping block For this purpose, the bottom end of the standard c is made with a threaded cavity c', in
`which to receive a screw d, resting on the bottom of the box b. To hold the screw d in place, the same is journaled in diaphragms e e', the upper one of which, e, being made quite heavy, because against it abuts the integral collar d', provided on the screw d for turning the same, The diaphragm e has to sustain the shock of the impact of the knives upon the chopping block. The collar d is conveniently made with series of holes, in which to insert a rod or other instrument, by
which to turn the screw d, so as to adjust the standard c up and downJjgg' In the perpendicular member of the standard c is journaled an internal gear-wheel f, provided with a handle f. Above the axle of the wheelf there is journaled in the standard c cneof the ends of the crank-shaft g, the opposite end of which shaft is journaled in the hanger h. Details of the construction of such hanger are shown in Figs. 5 and 6. The upper end of the hanger h is made with a threaded shank h, inserted in a threaded aperture therefor made in the upper horizontal member of the standard c; and the hanger 71, is given additional rigidity by means of a nut i. The lower end of .the hanger h is made with the hinged parthz, constituting the lower half of the box in which is journaled the inner end of the crank-shaft g. The hinged half k2 is secured to the bottom of the main body of the hanger h by abolt and nut y', inserted through holes therefor made in projecting lips on the meeting faces of the two halves of said box.
On the crank-arm g, is affixed a pinion 7, meshing with the internal gear of the wheel f. On the inner end of the crank-arm gais mounted a fixed collar l, and a cam m. Said. cam is made with a groove on its peripheryf* in' which to receive the strap of the pitmanrod n, which pitman-rod is pivotally connected with the lower end of a lever o, pivotally supported in a bracket o, projecting from the upper member of the standard c.
In the upper extremity of the members c is made an eye or box, having a thread in which is inserted the threaded end of a pipe p, serving as a guide bearing for a vertically reciprocating rod To avoid an undue friction, the pipe p 1s made with diapliragms p at its two ends, in which the rod g reciprocates; and there are furthermore, diaphragms p2 provided, incidentally serving as bearings for the rod g too, but mainly functionating to provide a sort of an oil box for lubricating Ioo the rod q. For this purpose, the pipe p is made with an opening p3, through which waste is introduced, between the diaphragms p2, and packed about reciprocating rod g, and
a hole p4 is provided through which to intro- Io 5 duce lubricant. The upper diaphragm p2 allowing the same to trickle through onto the packing between the two diaphragms p2, and the lubricant is absorbed in such packing.
vThe idea being to furnish sufficient lubricant 1 1o for the reciprocating rod q, but at the same time to prevent the lubricant trickling down such reciprocating rod on to the knives r. On the reciprocating rod g, above the eX- tremity of the upper member of the standard C 'is journaled on the rod g crown-wheel s, provided with la peripheral groove s in which to receive thel liorked end of a yoke t, by which the crown-wheel is held against vertical displacement. Y
The reciprocating rod q is .made with alongitudinal groove gf, and the hub otl the cro'wn# wheel s is provided with a stud-screw s2, the point of which enters the groove (l, and in sov doing provides an operative connection between the crown-wheel s and the reciprocating rod q, allowing the latter to be reciprocated in the hub ol the crown-wheel, and at the same time causing said rod to be progressively rotated by the progressive revolution of said crown-wheel.
The rotation of the crown-wheel s is ell'ected by means of a pawl u, pivoted to the upper end of the lever 0. In each movement of 'the lever o, due to the action of pitman a, the
pawl u is moved from one tooth of the crownwheel to another, and as the action of the rod 0 is reversed the pawl u will move the crownwheel, and therewith the rod g and the knives supported from the lower end of the rod Q, a distance equal to the length of a tooth ol the crown-wheel. The object of this construction is to cause the knives r to operate over the entire surface of the chopping block. The rod g is reciprocated by means of a link o, the upper end ot which is connected with the crank end g of the shaft g, and the lower end of which link is secured on the stud-pin w of a collar w, inserted between a lixed collar q2 and a movable collar g3 on the lower end of the rod q.
To the lower extremit)T of the rod (l is rigidly al'liXed a bar y, made with a series of the transverse slots i/ in which to receive the ribs r of the knives r. The knives are clamped in place by means of set-screws z; and in order to facilitate the adjustment of the knives they are respectively provided with collars r2 so positioned that when the ribs r of the knives are inserted in the slots y of the bar the ribs r2 will abut against the side of the bar, when the knives have been put in their proper position; after which the knives may be secured by means of the setscrews z.
Vithin the annular casing a of the base ot my machine is inserted a wooden chopping block x. To secure the chopping block in place I provide the same with stud-pins 2, on opposite sides, arranged to he inserted in slots a2, the ends ot the casing a, and to be engaged by hooks 3. On the upper part of the block a, is a'ttixed a rim 4 to hold the material being operated upon on the chopping block.
