Be it known that we, SEELEY J. BAXTER and JosEPH L, CARLYLE, citizens of the United States, residing, respectively, at Wamego, in the county of Pottawatomie and State of Kansas, and Doniphan, county of Ripley, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway-Switches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to switches and more particularly to adjusting devices for-switches, and has for its object to provide a switch with an adjusting device that can be easily and readily operated, and to provide the adjusting means with means for manipulating the same, the manipulating means being always ready for use and accessible to switchmen, track walkers and others in authority, and capable of being locked when not in use so as to prevent an unauthorized person from tampering with the switch.
With the above and other objects in view, the present invention consists in the combination and `arrangement of parts hereinafter more fullydescribed illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and yparticularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion, size and minor details without departing from the spirit or sacriflcing any of the advantages thereof.
` In the drawings z-Figure 1 is a plan view. Fig. 2 is a face view of a portion of one of the adjusting rods partly in elevation and partly in section. Fig. 3 is a detail plan view of a portion of one ofthe adjusting rods.
.Referring now to the drawings, the reference characters 10 and 11 indicate the switch points of the switch connected together by two or more adjusting rods 1 which are preferably made up of two sections 2 and 2, attached at. their outer ends to the switch points in any suitable manner and screw threaded at their inner ends, the section 2 being oppositely threaded from that section 2a. The inner ends of these sections are connected together by a sleeve or nut 3 that is threaded to correspond to the threads of the sections. Each sleeve or nut is provided with recesses 4 on its periphery near .one of its ends, the recesses being adapted for the reception of the dog 5 carried by the lever 6. This lever is provided with a loop 7 at one end with the loop portion of the lever bent at an angle to the body of the lever so as to permit the latter to have universal .play with respect to the rod 1. When the lever is placed in the position indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2, it is in position to be swung axially to4 operate the sleeve or .nut 3 to adjust the section 2 and 2a of the adjusting rods 1, and in order to permit of this .adjustment the lever 6 must have lateral movement in either direction withrespect to the adjusting rod, and as it has its lateral or axial movement with respect to the adjusting rods and may also be thrown down into alinement with the latter, it follows that this lever is permitted to have a universal movement.y
The lever is provided at its free end with an eye 8 adapted to receive a staple 9 carried by one of the sections of the corresponding adjusting rod, and when in this horizontal position vand straddling the staple 9, the lever is locked against u'se by a suitable locking means 12.
In operation, should` the switchman or other employee of the road ind that the switch is out of true and needs adjustment, he unlocks the lock 12 with the proper key and moves the lever 6 to a vertical position to bring the dog 7 into engagement with one or more of the recesses 4 of the nut. By then moving the lever axially of the rod the nut may be turned to make the required adjustment. After making the adjustment the lever is again moved to a horizontal position and locked so that anyone not in authority cannot have access thereto, and all tampering with the switch is prevented. The rod connecting the switch with the switchstand is also provided with the adjusting and operating means, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
What is claimed is- 1. A switch adjusting device comprising means for operating the adjusting device, said means embracing one part of the device, and means for locking the operating means out of operative position.
2. A switch adjusting device comprising means for operating said device, said means including a lever having a looped end embracing a part of the device, and means for locking the operating means out offoperative position. y
3. In a switch adjusting device, means for IOO operating said adjusting device, said means including a lever having a looped end embracing a part of the device, and means for locking the operating means upon the part of the device embraced by said loop portion.
4. The combination with a switch including switching points of adjusting devices between the switch points, each adjusting device comprising rods connected by a sleeve, each sleeve having recesses near one end 5 and a lever embracing one part of each adjusting device and having a dog for engagement with the recesses of the corresponding sleeve to move the latterk to adjustJ the device.

The combination with a switch including switching points of adjusting devices between the switch points, each adjusting device comprising rods connected by a sleeve, each sleeve having recesses near one end; 4a lever embracing one part of each adjusting device and having a dog for engagement with the recesses of the corresponding sleeve to move the latter to adjust the device, and means for locking the lever upon the part of the device embraced by the lever.
6. In a switch adjusting device, means for operating said adjusting device, and means for locking the operating means when not in use.
7. A switch provided with adjustable switch rods, means carried by said rods to adjust the same, and means for locking the aforementioned means when not in use.
8. A switch provided with adjustable switch rods, a lever carried by the rods for adjusting the same and means for locking the lever to the switch rods when not in use.
9. A lever of the character described having one end bent and provided with a loop with its opposite end provided. with an eye and carrying a projecting dog intermediate the ends.
