SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 609,473, dated August 23, 1898.

.To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known'that I, JOHN G. SoRENsoN, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Davenport, in the county of Scott"and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Switch- Stand Switch-Lock, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to switch-stands, and particularly to means in connection therewith for securing the switch-lever in its several adjusted positions; and the object in view is to provide a simple and efficient construction and arrangement of locking device and cooperatingr parts whereby the effective engagement of the switch-leverA is insured, whereby the locking device is protected from accumulations of dust and from moisture and at the same time is readily accessible for purposes of repair and adjustment, and whereby said locking device is capable of manipulation such as toadapt the switch-lever to be successively operated to move the switchrails to different positions without repeated operations of the lock-key.
A further object of my present invention, which consists in an improvement upon the construction shown and described in Patent No. 598,751, granted to me on February 8, 1898, is to provide locking devices which are carried solely by the head and switch-lever, whereby said head and switch-lever may be applied to any switch-stand of ordinary construction having a notched table, and also to provide said locking devices with means whereby they are held in their inoperative positions without necessitating the Vpresence of the operating-key.
Further objects and advantages of this invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof willbe particularly pointed out in the appended claims. Y
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a portion of a switch-stand, showing a head and switch-lever provided with a locking device constructed in accordance with my invention applied in the operative position thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a View of the locking device with the face-plate omitted, showing the key barrel and ward inthe positions occupied thereby whenfthe' bolt is about to be retracted. Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the positions of the parts when the key has been turned sufliciently to move the bolt to its unlocked or inoperative position. Fig. 5 is a detail view in perspective of the bolt detached. Fig. 6 is a similar View of the tumbler.

The table l, which may be supported by any. suitable frame 2, constituting the body portion'of the stand, is provided with notches 3 for engagement by a switch-lever 5, pivotally mounted upon a head 6. This head is adapted to be secured to the switch-shaft or spindle?, ot' the usual or any preferred construction, and may be attached thereto by means of a suitable key 7 f. (Shown in Fig. l.) In practice l prefer to make the head of sectional construction,whereby the casting thereof is facilitated, the sections 6 and 6b being united upon a line intersecting the opening provided for the reception of the upper end of the switch-shaft or spindle and extending to the front end to also divide the slot in which the switch-lever is pivotally mounted. The switch-head is arranged to traverse the table l and is of a length slightly in excess of the radius of said table in order to project terminally beyond the periphery thereof, and the longitudinal slot or switch-lever seat 9 is adapted to register with either of the notches in the periphery of the table, whereby the lever may assume a pendent approximately vertical position to engage the notch and thereby lock the head against swinging movement. The switch-lever is fulcrumed at an intermediate point, as by the pivot l0, and its upward or inward extension is adapted to swing in the lever-seat to provide for the arrangement of the lever in a horizontal position (indicated in dotted lines in Fig; 2) when it is desired to turn the head and with it the switch shaft or spindle." The `upper portion of the front end ofthe`switch-lever seat is closed by a stoplip 1l, arranged in the path of the free end of the switch-lever extension, and the latter is preferably rabbeted, as shown at l2, to receive said lip, whereby the front surface ofl the lever is iiush with the exterior surface of the stop-lip. The locking device for the switch-lever is mounted upon and carried by the lever and IOO includes a bolt 13, mounted for extension be! yond the extremity of the lever and engagement with a bolt-socket 14, formed in the upper wall of the lever-seat. The keyhole 15, which is formed in the front side of the switchlevcr, is adapted to be covered by a keyholeguard. 16, which is pivotally mounted upon the front surface of the stop-lip.
The locking device includes a casing 17, in which the bolt 13 is mounted to slide, a guidepin 18, carried bythe bolt and upon which is coiled an actuating-spring 19, and a tumbler 20, pivotally mounted within the casing for terminal engagement with a shoulder 21 on the bolt, said tumbler having an inclined offset 22, which is arranged in the path of a camface 23, carried by the bolt, whereby as the bolt is retracted said cam-face comes in contact with the offset ofthe tumbler and throws the free end of the tumbler into engagement with said shoulder, as clearly shown in Fig. 4. The means whereby the bolt is retracted includes a pin 24 for engagement by the ward of a key 25, said key being fitted upon a keypost 2G, projecting from one wall of the casing through a slot 27 in the bolt; also, the tumbler is deflected atan intermediate point, as shown at 28, for contact by the ward of the key. With the parts of the locking device in the positions illustrated in Fig. 3, the bolt being extended or in its locking position, the key maybe applied to the key-post and turned to bring its ward into engagement with the pin, as shown in said Fig. 3, and a further movement of the key through a quarter-revolution draws the bolt-key back and causes the cam-face of' the bolt to trip the tumbler and swing its free end into engagement with the shoulder, as above described. This position of parts is illustrated in Fig. 4, and it is obvious that the key may then be withdrawn and the switch mechanism operated as frequently as desired without causing the locking of the switch-lever. When it is desired to return the parts to their locking positions in order that the switch-lever may be secured to maintain the switch-head in aset position, the key should be again introduced and turned through a quarter-revolution to cause its ward to strike the deflected intermediate portion of the tumbler and thus throw the free end of the latter out of' engagement wit-h the shoulder of the bolt.
From the above description it will be seen that the construction of the apparatus is simple and that the locking device may be arranged to allow free movement of the switchhead or may be released with facility to secure said head at the desired adjustment. Furthermore, it will be seen that the sectional construction of head provides for the manufacture thereof at a small cost, the sections being secured together by one or more bolts 29, located, for instance, upon opposite sides of the plane of the opening in which the switch shaft or spindle is fitted.

and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention. A
Having described my invention, what I claim is- 1. The combination with a switch-head and apivotal switch-lever, of a locking device having abolt mounted forsliding movement, and a swinging tumbler for engagement with a shoulder on the bolt and having a member in the path of a projection on the bolt to cause engagement of the tumbler with said shoulder, substantially as specified.
2. The combination with a switch-head and a pivotal switch-lever, of alockin g device having a bolt mounted for sliding movement and provided with a cam-face and a spaced shoulder, and a swinging trip adapted for engagement with said shoulder and having an offset arranged in the path of the cam-face of the bolt, substantially as specified.
3. The combination with a switch-head and a pivotal switch-lever, of alocking device having a bolt mounted for sliding movement and yieldingly held in its extended position, said bolt being provided with a cam-face and a spaced shoulder, and a pivotal trip for terminal engagement with said shoulder and having an offset arranged in the path of said cam-face, the tumbler being deflected at an intermediate point for engagement by a keyward, substantially as specified.
4. The combination of a switch-head having a switch-lever seat, a switch-lever pivotally mounted at an intermediate point in said seat, a fixed stop-ear arranged in the path of the free end of the switch-le ver extension, for checking the movement of the lever when it reaches its normal or engaging position, and a locking device carried by the switch-lever extension and having a bolt for engagement with a socket in the wall of' the switch-lever seat contiguous to said stop, substantially as specified.
5. The combination of a switch-head having a switch-lever seat, a switch-leverfulcrumed at an intermediate point in said seat, a fixed stop-lip arranged in the path of the inner end or extension of the switch-lever, the latter being rabbeted to arrange the face of the lever iiush with the exterior surface of said stop-lip, a locking` device mounted upon the switch-lever extension and having a bolt for engagement with a socket in the wall of the switch-lever seat contiguous to the plane of the stop-lip, and a keyhole-guard pivotally mounted upon said stop-lip to cover the keyhole of the switch lever, substantially as specified.
