To all whom it may concern.-
Be' it known that I, VVILLIAM F. LAU'rnN- SCHLAGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Motor-- Drives, of which the following a specification.
l have shown my invention applied, to a sewing machine, this application is very usefulin illustrating the mode. of operation and the utility and desirability of my ii'ivontion, although it is obvious that the invention is also applicable to other machines of similar or dillerent character. In the operation of a sewing machine, it issometimes desirable that the sewing operation on the machine shall continue uninterruptedly and evenly, for instance in making a long seam. Again, it may be desired to intermittently start and stop the sewing machine at exceedingly short intervals, as in making short scams, or shifting the goods between seams, 1st; tacking, bordering or seaming gloves, shoe parts and the like. My improved device is very e'll'ective'in accomplishing either purpose as the drive is such that the operative eil'ect oi" the motor is wmnmuicated instantly and fully to the machine, arid the machine may be instantly stopped, for instance at the end of a seam, by a brake operating on the motor and c nnmunicating its braking ell'ect instantly to the machire, the coz.tiimity of operation of the machize being under instant control of the operator under all conditions. It is the object of my invention to provide a motor drive in which 'the operating parts for ellccting starting of the drive move transversely of the axis of theimotor-shatt for relieving the latter of end strain, to provide a motor drive in which the said operating parts move about but independent of the 1notorshaft, to provide means whereby the machine may be quickly started and stopped and, while operating, may be relieved of binding end stress upon the motor-slml't and toprovide a motor drive in which the desired tight or loose connection between the motorshai't and operating shalt oi the machine may be instantly etl'ected, and the invention will be readily understood from the 'followii g dc scription and claims, and from the drawirgs, in which latter:

The bearing 8 is formed by an annular stud 10 in which there is a bushing 11-, and over which there is an annular sleeve 12 which forms a journalpiece of a rocker-arm 13. The sleeve and bushing may be secured to the stud by a screw-plug H. The rocker-arm 13 comprises an operating lever 15 having a bearing 16 journaled on the sleeve 12, this hearing forming an annular boss upon which a pul- Icy-arm 18 is adjustably secured, as by means of having a split-bearing 19 on the pulley-arm about the boss of bearing 16, a clamping screw 20 securing the split-bearing to the boss in desirable positions so that the radial positions of the operating lever and pulley arm may be relatively adjusted. Flange 21 on the operating lever positions the pulley-arm, and flange 22 on the sleeve positions the rocker-arm sidewardly. 'lhe pulley-arm has a pulley 23 thereon which forms a tighteuer-pulley tor the belt 7.
The tightener-pulley has a hub 24 and is journaled on a stud releasably secured to the pulley-arm in a bearing 26 on the latter, a suitable nut at the back of the stud screwing over a threaded rear end of the stud for securing the stud in place in the bearing.
31 is a brake having a braking take 32 adapted to engage preferably the outer face of the belt 7, the braking force of the belt being communicated to the pulley 4 through the belt for forming a compressible braking substance between the braking face and the pulley for causing immediate stoppage of the motor-shaft. The belt 7 preferably extends upwardly, with its. upper end of its loop received about the pulley 6 so that the weight of the belt is received by said pulley, thereby acting as a brake on the machine-shaft when the motor-shaft is thus stopped. The brake comprises a brake-arm 34 pivoted on a screw 35 screwing into a boss 36 on the operating lever and having a spring 37 between the swinging end of the brake, and the operat ing lever, between the rocking axis of the latter and the pivotal point of the brake therewith. This spring is secured preferably to a screw 38 in the brake and a screw 39 on the operating lever.

The operation is such that the brake is first released, the tightening of the belt then taking place by the single movement of the rocker-armv The return of the roclmr-arm may be limited by a pin 48 secured to the supporting plate 40 in a recess 49, forming a stop for the rockerarm.

A spring 67 is secured to the movable terminal on a screw 68 and over insulation 69 on a pin 70 securedto the supporting plate in an aperture 71. This spring urges engagement of the electric contaets.
76 is a suitable treadle which, in the form shown, is an imitation of an ordinary sewing machine treadle, which is pivoted at 7 7. rod 78 connects the treadle and the rockerarm for operating the rocker-arm from the treadle. Thus the treadle is provided with a sideward extension 79 with which the rod 78 is articulated at 80, the upper end of the rod having a bearing 81 on the pin 62 with which it is releasably secured. thereby breaking contact between the electrio contacts with a snap movement owing to the relation of said arm and the point of contact between the rocker'arm and the operating lever of the movable contact and owing further to the shape of the engaging wall 45 and its relation to the pin 42, which causes the breaking to take place with a snap movement for preventing arcing or sparking between the electric contacts, upon which the brake is instantly applied for stopping the motor-and machine. I prefer to provide a cover 86 for the contacts, the cover eing releasably secured to the supporting plate by screws 87 received by apertures 88 in the supporting plate, this cover being provided with a side apertureSQ for receiving the movable contact 57. 4

If it is desired to reverse the direction of drive the brake-arm is reversed upon-the op eratin lever, that is, its outer face placedinwardly facing the operating lever, the operating lever being swung to the reverse side of the rotary axis of the motor-shaft under the opening 49' into which the pin 48 is placed, the pulley-arm 18 being similarly reversed upon the sleeve l2 so that the tightener pulley may iinpin e against the stretch 93 of the belt, which wil then become the slack side of the belt. The cover 86 is also provided with an additional side-aperture 89 for receiving the contact-arm when reversely placed.

The constri'iction and arrangement of the parts permits instant stopping of the motor and of the machine upon the applicatiorrof the brake, as the brake acts. directly upon the po.wertransferring belt, forcing it against the motor-pulley for instantly stopping the same and also positively stopping the travel of the belt by its application to the belt. The machine-pulley is above the motor-pulley and the weight of the belt rests upon the machine-pulley, thereby acting a brake upon the same for in turn promptly stopping the machine In my improved device the motor-shaft and the mzichineshaft are relieved from undue except the driving strain, in that the rocker-arm is supported on a rigid journal'in such manner-that its pi otal support or operation places no strain upon the motorshaft, thenioving parts moving in a direction at substantially right angles to the rotary axis of the motor-shaft, the construction permitting -the motor-shaft to naturally follow its longitudinal vibrations induced by the eleetro-motive force between the fields 95 and the armature 96 on the inotor-slmft, so that the armature may be free to follow the lines of electro-inotive force and thus permit easy running of the motor, utilizing all the power in the motor to full efficiency. For aiding in this I prefer to make the groove 97 of the tightener pulley slightly wider or shallower than the groove in the driving and driven pulleys. For preventing overthrow of end movement in the armature-shaft I provide it with collars 98 adapted to be limited by the bearings of the armature-shaft.
In my improved motor drive the electric connections of the drive with the electric motor arepreferably made in such manner as to be out of the way and preferably inside the supporting-plate, with the connection from an outside source of electricity for the motor and drive being made preferably by an ordinary electric plug connecting with the drive. Thus one of the motor-terminals 101 is electrically connected with the binding post 56 on the contact 51. The other of the motorterminals 102 of the motor is electrically connected with the terminal 103 l'or the socket 104 shown in the supporting-plate and electrically connecting with the screw-ferrule 105 for the plug. An electric conductor 106 connects with the binding-post 66 on the pivot for the movable contact and with the terminal 107, being the other terminal for the plug. These terminals 103 107 are insulated respectively from the supporting-plate by insulations 108 and 109 and the ferrule 105 is insulated from the supporting-plate by insulation 1 10. The electric conductors 1 I 1 112 represent the conductors from a suitable source ol electric energy and respectively connect with the outer electric conducting screw-lerrule 113:3 ol the plug 114 at 115 and with the terminal 116, the latter adapted to engage the terminal 107, and thereby complete electric circuit in the motor when the contacts 51 and 57 are engaged in. the operation of the motor-drive. The motor- terminals 101 and 102 may also connect respectively with the binding-post 6e and ter minal 107, or may be arranged in reverse or der at the respective binding-posts and terminals, the connection being such that. power is transnnltcd to the motor when the energizing electric conductors are in place and the contacts 51 and 57 in contact.
llaving thus lully described my invention what l1 claim as" new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. .[n a motor drive, the combination, with a motor-shalt, a bearing thcrclor, and a pulley for said shalt, of a brake and tightenerpulley oscilli'tting. about said bearing and movable in planes transverse to the longitudinal axis oi said shalt.
2. ln a motor drive, the combination with a drive-pulley, oi an operating lever, a tightcner-pulley therefor, a brake, a movablecontact arm, and means for moving said opcrating lever, tightener-pulley, bralv'e and movable-contact arm in planes transverse to the rotary axis of said pulley.
3. In a. motor drive, the combination, ol a motor-shalt, a bearing therefor, an operating lever supported about said bearing, and a brake and a movable-contact lever moved by said operating lever in directions transi verse to the longitudinal axis of said shalt.
1-. in a motor drive, the combination, with i a drive-pulley, of an operating lever, a brake i operated thereby, said brake having a ('on tact-face thereon, and a contact-part engaged by the latter lor resisting the movement of said brake and causing its release with a snap movement.

In a motor drive, the combination, with a drive-pulley, of an operating lever, a brake operated thereby, said brake having a colitact-t'ace thereon, a contact-part. engaged by the latter, a movable electric-contact operated by said operating lever constructed and arranged for first resisting release of said brake, and then making electric contact for the motor with a snap movement.
6. In a motor drive, the combination, with a drive-pulley, of an operating lever and a tightener-pulley arm having adjustable con nection therebetween, a tightener-pulley on said arm, and a brake on said lever, substantially as described. 7

In a motor drive, the combination with a motor-pulley and a driven pulley, said pulleys arranged. for having a belt travel thereabout, of a tightener-pulley, an operatin; arm and a brake having a contact-lace, and a contact part for said contact-lace, coustructed and arranged for initially resisting release ol said lHztht and then permitting movement ol said arm with an accelerated movement.

In a motor drive, the combination, with a motor-pulley and a driven pulley adapted for having a belt travel thereabout, oi a tightener-pulley, an arm therefor, a brake on said arm having a con'tactface thereonffacontact part for said brake and an electric contact adapted to be moved by said tightener-pulley arm, the .relation of said contact'face and contact-part being such as to resist the release of said brake and permit the continuing movement of said arm with an accelerated motion for moving said electric contact with a snap movement, substantially as described.

In a motor drive, the combination' -with a motor-pulley and a driven pulley brake on said arm having a contact-face thereon, a contact-part for said brake, and an electric contact adapted to be engaged by said tightener-pulley arm, the relation of said contact-face and contact-part being such as to resist the release of said brake and permit the continuing movement of said arm with an accelerated motion for moving said electric contact with a snap movement, said operating lever being articulated for adjusting its operating end relatively to its pulley end, substantially as described.

16. in a motor drive, the combination, with a motor-pulley and a driven pulley, the said pulleys adapted to have a belt travel thereabout, of an operating arm, a tightenerpulley therefor, a brake, means for urging said brake toward said first-named pulley for normally clamping said belt between said brake and pulley, a contact face on Said brake and a contact-part engaging therewith so arranged as to initially resist release of said brake and then permit accelerated move ment of said operating arm, the said operating arm and brake swinging at substantially right angles to the rotary axis of said firstnamed pulley, and an electric-contact lever adapted to be engaged by said operating arm and positioned for being relieved therefrom at the beginning of said accelerated movement thereof, substantially as described.
17. in a motor drive, the combination with a motor-pulley and a driven pulley, the said pulleys adapted to have a belt travel. thereabout, of an operating arm, a tightenerpulley thereon, abrake, means for urging said brake toward said first-named pulley for normally clamping said belt between said brake and pulley, a contact-face on said brake and a contact-part engaging therewith so arranged asto resist release of said brake and permit further movement of said arm with an accelerated movement, the said operating lever and brake swinging at substantially right angles to the rotary axis of said first-named pulley, an electric-contact lever adapted to be engaged by said operating arm and positioned for being relieved therefrom at the beginning ofsaid accelerated movement thereof and arranged for braking electric contact with an accelerated movement at the end of the return movement of said operating lever, substantially as described.
18. In a motor drive, the combination of a rocker-arm, a tightener-pulley therefor, a
brake pivoted to said rocker-arm and having a contact-fade, a contact-part for said contact-face, and an electric-contact lever, sa1d rockenarm and lever having insulated moving agency therebetween, constructed and operating, substantially as described.
19. in a motor-drive, the combination of a rocker-arm, a tightener-pulley therefor, a brake pivoted to-said rocker-arm and having a contact face, a contact-part for said contact-face, an electric contact-lever, said rocker-arm and lever having insulated moving agency thercbetween, and astop for said rocker-arm, constructed and operating, substantially as described.
20. in a motor-drive, the combination of a rocker-arm, a tightcner-pulley therefor, a brake pivoted to said rocker-arm and having a contact-face, a spring between said rocl erarm and brake, a contact-part for said con tact-face, and an electric contact-lever, said rocker-arm and lever having insulated movterminals with the motor-terminals and con necting the other of sald electric contacts and the other of said terminals with each other.

In a motor drive for an electric motor, the combination, with a plate, of an operating lever, a tightcner-pulley therei'or, electric contacts the making and breaking of the contact whereof being reflected by said lever, terminals for a source of electric energy, and electric connections between said terminals and the motor-terminals and electric-contacts arranged in rear of said plate.
23. In a motor drive for an electric motor,

In a motor drive, the combination with a motor, and a pulley therefor,,of an electric contact located above the rotary axis of said pulley, a movable-contact arm extending laterally from said first-named contact, an operating arm therefor, of a tightener-pullcy for said operating arm, a supporting plate for said electric contacts, said supporting plate having securing means thereon for said movable-contact arm equidistant from said first-named contact and the rotary axis of said pulley at the respective sides of said first-named contact and said rotary axis, the combination, oi an operating lover, a
contact-part for the latter, a stop-pin for said operating arm, and positioning means on said supportingplate equidistant from said 'lirstnamed contact and the rotary axis of said pulley for the pivot of said contact-arm, contact-part and stop-pin at the respective sidesof said first-named contact and the rotary'axis of said shaft, substantially as described.
