Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES G. PARKERSON, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at La Fayette, in the parish of Lafayette and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway- Ties, of which the following is aspecification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention is an improvement in railway ties, and relates particularly to a compound tie composed, preferably, partly of metal and wood.
The object of the invention is the production of a tie which will require a less'amount of wood than, and the life of which is greatly increased over that of the ordinary wood tie only sufficient wood being used for the rails to rest on and hold the spikes.
Another object of the invention is the provision of means for facilitating the securing of blocks of, preferably, wood upon a metal base.
IVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a tie constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2- is a perspective view of another embodiment of my improved tie. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of another embodiment of my improved tie. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the removable bars employed in constructing the embodiment depicted in Fig. 1. Fig. 5is a perspective view of one of the fastening memers of the embodiment depicted in Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is another embodiment of the fastening members depicted in Fig. 3, and Fig, 7 is an end view of a tie similar to the embodiment depicted in Fig. 3, except that the base member is of a hollow structure in this instance.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates preferably a fiat, metallic base member. This base member may be formed from a sheet or bar of metal. The base member is provided, upon each side, with two pairs of, preferably, integral bolts or prongs 2. Each pair of bolts is positioned contiguous to one end of the metal base member, and the bolts of each pair are connected by an integral reinforcing web 3. Preferably a wooden block 4 is positioned between the pairs of bolts or prongs at each end of the base member 1, and
I the ends of the bolts 2 extend above the upper face of the blocks. The ends of said bolts 2 are screw-threaded, and extend. above the upper face of the blocks 4. Bars 5 are provided with apertured ends, and when the bars are upon the bolts 2, the screw-threaded ends of said bolts extend through the apertured ends of said bars. These removable bars are pressed against the wooden blocks 4 by means of nuts 6 threaded upon the upper ends of said bolts 2, and retain the blocks 4 in position between the webs 2 and upon the base member 1.
If it is desired, the bars 5 may be provided with a lower biting edge or tooth 7, as is bar 5, see Fig. 4. By means of this tooth or biting edge 7, when the nuts 6 are threaded tight upon said bar, the tooth or biting edge 7 will grip the block and prevent any longitudinal movement thereof upon the base member 1, whereby the block 4 is rigidly fixed upon said base member. It will, therefore, be obvious that I have provided means for preventing any lateral movement or lateral displacement of the block from off of the base member 1, and through the medium of the tooth or biting edge 7 of the embodiment depicted in Fig. 4, longitudinal movement of the block will also be prevented, making the structure substantially as firm and durable as if the blocks 4 were integral with the base member 1. The rails 8 are positioned transverse of blocks 4, and are, preferably, secured to said blocks by means of the ordinary spikes 9.
In the embodiment depicted in Fig. 2, upon the flat, preferably metallic base member 10, there are positioned bars or fastening members 11, each bar being positioned contiguous to one end. Blocks 4 are positioned between the base member 10 and the fastening members 11, and the rails 8 are positioned across the blocks 4 and secured thereto in, preferably, the same manner as in the embodiment depicted in Fig. 1. Each of the fastening members 11 comprises a pair of vertical sides 12, and a horizontal top portion 13 integrally connecting said sides 12. Integral with the lower end of each of the vertical sides 12 is a horizontal, substantially U-shaped foot 14. The horizontal portions of the foot are apertured, as at 15, and these apertures are adapted to register with apertures formed in the base member 10, when said fastening members 11 are positioned thereon, see Fig. 2. Extending through the registering apertures of the base member 10 and the feet 14, are fastening means, as for instance, bolts or rivets 16. If it is desired, the horizontal top portion 13 may be cut partly away, as at 17, thereby providing a downwardly extending tooth or lug 18, which tooth 18 constitutes a biting surface whereby it enters a portion of the block 4 and prevents any longitudinal sliding movement of the block or blocks upon the base member 10, performing the same function as the tooth or biting edge 7 of the bar depicted in Fig. 4. By means of the feet 14, the fastening mem bers are securely attached to the base member 10, and the vertical sides 12 rest snug against the vertical sides of the blocks 4, forming a casing around the blocks for preventing any lateral movement thereof upon base member 10. By means of these fastening members, a rigid and efficient attaching means is provided for securing the blocks 4 upon the metallic base member 10.
In the embodiment depicted in Fig. 3, upon the base member 10, blocks 4 are mounted, and resting upon these blocks 4 are rails 8, which rails are secured to the blocks by spikes 9. The fastening members in this embodiment, are substantially inverted, U- shaped members 19, which are provided with lower threaded ends 20, which ends 20 extend through apertured portions of the base member 10, and upon the threaded ends 20 are nuts 21, see Fig. 7. In Fig. 7, the hollow base member 22has the blocks 4 mounted thereon similar to the mounting of said blocks in the embodiment depicted in Fig. 3. If it is desired, the U-shaped fastening members 19 may be formed with a tooth or biting edge 23, see Fig. 6, which performs the same function as tooth 7 and tooth or lug 18. It will, therefore, be obvious that in Figs. 5 and 6, I have shown a fastening member of substantially an inverted U-shaped structure, which is provided with a toothed or biting edge for gripping the blocks 4. Furthermore, it will be obvious that I have provided fastening means carried by a base member and surrounding the blocks, which fastening means is provided with a tooth or biting edge that will enter the blocks when the fastening members are in position upon the base member, for the purpose as hereinbefore specified.
It will be obvious that by reason of the compound structure of my im roved tie, the
- life of the same is considerab e longer than the ordinary wood tie, and, furthermore, only a small amount of wood is necessitated in constructing each tie, as compared with the amount of wood necessary in the construction of an ordinary wood tie, which is very important. Other advantages might be designated for my improved tie over the ordinary structure now on the market.
It will be obvious that the members 2 ressasea ferred to in this specification as bolts, may also be referred to as prongs. These words, to wit: bolts and prongs may be used synonymously.
What I claim is:
1. A railway tie, comprising a base member, pairs of vertical bolts upon each side and integral with said base member, reinforcing webs integral with said base member and the lower ortion of the bolts of the pairs, removable blocks carried by said base member and positioned between the pairs of bolts, removable bars engaging the upper ends of said bolts and resting upon said blocks, and means for holding said bars against said blocks and upon said bolts.
2. A railway tie, comprising a base member, a plurality of. pairs of bolts integral with said base member near each end, reinforcing means connecting the bolts of each pair, a block positioned between the pairs of bolts near each end, removable bars provided with apertured ends, positioned upon the upper ends of said bolts and resting upon said blocks, and nuts threaded upon the upper end of said bolts and engaging said bars and clamping the same against said blocks.
3. A'railway tie, comprising a flat base member, a pair of bolts positioned upon each side and contiguous to each end of said base member, blocks positioned between the pairs of bolts near each end, removable bars carried by said bolts and extending across said blocks, and means clamping said bars against said blocks.
4. A railway tie, comprising a base member provided upon each side near each end with a pair of integral bolts, a web integral with the base member and the bolts of each pair, blocks positioned between the pairs of bolts near each end, means engaging said blocks and connecting the bolts of the pairs upon opposite sides of said base member, and means for securing said connecting means securely against said blocks.
5. A railway tie, comprising a base member provided with integral bolts, reinforcing means connecting said base member and IIO some of said bolts, blocks positioned between some of said bolts, and means connecting some of said bolts and engaging said blocks.
6. A railway tie, comprising a base member, bolts carried by said base member and provided with upper threaded ends, blocks positioned between some of said bolts, removable bars positioned upon and connecting the upper ends of some of said bolts, and nuts threaded upon the ends of said bolts and adapted to secure said bars upon the bolts and in engagement with said blocks.
7. A railway tie, comprising a flat base member, blocks carried by said base member, fastening means securing said blocks upon said base member, one of said fastening means provided with atooth engaging a engaging the tops and sides of said blocks and securing said blocks to said base member, each fastening means provided at its top with a depending tooth biting a block, whereby longitudinal sliding movement of said block is prevented upon said base member.
