Description

ELI BARIIIOLOMEW, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
Letters Potent No. 85,355, dated December 29, 1868.
IIVIPROVED WASHING AND WRINGING-MACHINE The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all 'whom it imay concern Be it known that I, ELI BnRrHoLoMnw, ci Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga, and. State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Machine for Washing, lVringing, and Bleaching Clothes or Cloths, combining a reservoir and laundry-table, with a clothesrepository, which is so constructed and operated as to furnish running water through the clothes, and avoid the usual necessity of handling the goods during such process and Ido hereby declare that the following is afull and complete description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a plan view.
Figure 2 isa vertical section.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts iii the 'views The nature of my invention consists in the combination of' a circular vessel for the reception of the goods to be cleaned, and cleansing-materials, with the bottom of the vessel so bridged as to form a filter over a drain, below the articles to be cleansed, with pipes and stopeocks so inserted es to supply and discharge water and solutions necessary to facilitate the operations, and made use of to produce the result, and a removable cylinder, rotating above the clothes in the circular trough.
I construct a wheel to correspond with the width of the bridge, which is rolled by any suitable power over thebridge, and upon the goods placed thereon, to perform the cleansing work required.
By an inside partition, I form a supply-reservoir in the centre of the machine, and by a separable cover, 'which is removed while working the machine, and again replaced, I form a table and clothes-repository within.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.4
I construct my receptacle for the goods and cleansing-material of a circular form,'with suitable legs, B, and division C, with stop-cocks D E, for thc reception anddischarge of water from hydrants, or otherwise, thus forming an inner basin and reservoir, E, leaving a surrounding trough, G, in the bottom of which I place a bridge, H, so constructed as to form a filter over a drain, I, which is provided with a stop-cock, J, for the purpose of discharging turbid waste water and solutions.
I construct a'hollow wheel, K, the length oi' which will nearly ill the width of the trough G, with a handie, Z, and shaft L, connected with an upright revolving post, M. The surface of the wheel may be corrugated, or otherwise, the inside of which is made to contain water, or an equivalent, in one or more divisions, that the weight of the wheel may be increased or diminished without expense, except filling and discharging, by means of a plug, N, thereby forming au empty cask for transportation and light work, or any required weight for heavy labor.
I make the diameter of the wheel such, that when placed in the trough G, the surface will clear the rails of the bridge H, when the shaft and handle rest upon Y the rims of the trough G, that line fabrics may not receive too great friction when the machine is in operation.
I construct a cover, which is titte-d to the top of the machine, thereby combining a laundry-table and clothes-repository when not otherwise in use.
To operate my machine, I lill the reservoir F with cold or hot water, as may be required, or attach hydrant-pipes to stop-cock D for the supply.
I place the goods to be cleansed upon the bridge H, in suitable quant-ities to receive the weight of the wheel K from the reservoir, or otherwise. I lill the trough G with a suitable quantity of water, adding soap or alkalies, may be required. I then' till the wheel K with water, or an equivalent, at the plug N, and place it in the trough, upon the goods, and attach the shaft L to the revolving post M. I then roll the'wheel over the go'rds, and change the water, as maybe required,
to economizc expense of solutions and facilitate the work, by supplying clean waterfroin the reservoir stopcock E, and discharging turbid water at stop-cock J, until the articles are cleansed. I then lclose the. supply D, and open the discharge-cock J, and by the same operation of the wheel as for washing I press the water from the clothes, through the bridge H and drain I, out of the waste-'cock J, and the articles are washed and wrung out by the operation, which the heavy weight of the wheel, in rolling over them, will accomplish in a remarkably short time. I then apply any preferred bleaching-solution to white goods, and stir them with the wheel, in the-saine manner for washing, until well saturated, when clean water may be run through them in a similar manner as for washing, when they are again wrung out in the same mannerI as before. They may then be taken from the machine, thoroughly washed, bleached, and wrong out, not having been moved by the hands from the time theywere placed in the machine until they were taken from it. In au ordinary machine, of forty-four inches diameter, I putin at one time au ordinary family-washing of white goods,l and by avoiding the repeated handling of the goods by hand, as is usually done, and the facilities i`or changing waters, I occupy but a small. portion of the time generally applied to accomplish a similar' work..
What I claim as my invention, andidesire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The interior chamber Il, communicating with the exterior trough orcha-mber G, which is furnished with the ii.lteri1igbridge II, and with thc water-receptacle or drain I beneath it, in combination with the rotating cylinder K, connected by one end of its shait to a revolving post, all as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In a machine, as claimed above, making the revolving cylinder removable, together with the revolv ing post, so as to permit the cover to be placed over the machine when not in use, as and for the purposes set forth.
