Be it known that I, ALBERT GUM., a citizen ol' the ltepublic of Switzerland, residing at Swissvale, 1n the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garbagc-lil'ragons, of which the following is a speci'lication., rcl'erence being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in garbage wagons, and the invention relates more particularly to wagons used` by city governments in collecting garbage from the residences of the city.

The primary object ol' this invention is to provide a sanitary wagon for garbage from which" the odors or -fumes arising from the garbage cannot escape.

My invention aims to provide a normally closed wagon or compartment in which garbage can be collected, and in this connection, I have also devised a normally closed garbage can or receptacle adapted to be used in connection with my improved wagon. To this end, I aim to prevent the accumulated garbage to be collected from being exposed, while awaiting collection, and while being translerred to the garbage wagon.

The invention also aims to provide novel means whereby the garbage collected in my improved wagon can be easily and quickly removed from the wagon without manually handling the same.

By' the construction of my y improved wagon, together with its appurtenant parts, I fully protect the operator of' the wagon and maintain a perfect sanitary condition surrounding the same, and prevent the atmosphere from becoming impregnated. with foul odors or fumes that arise from the ordinary type of garbage wagon.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and referring to the drawing accompanying this application, like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts through out the several views, in which :wv--

To put my invention into practice, I construct my improved wagon ol" a running gear consisting oi a front truck 1 and a rear truck The trucks support a rectangular hori- Zontal frame 8 having a forward portion 4, which extends over the front truck 1. The forward portion 4 of the rectangular li-ranie embodies a platform and a vertically disposed f'ront board 6 carrying a conventional i'orm of seat 7.

Detachably mounted upon the rectangular frame 3 is a body 8 of my improved wagon, said body together with the rectangular iframe 3 being preferably constructed of light and durable metal, although in some instances wood may be readily used. The l body ofthe wagon consists of a compartment or receptacle 9 having inclined top plates 10, 10 and hinged overlapping end doors 11 and 12, the edge of the door 12 which overlaps the door 11 being provided with a movable locking rod 14, having an upper hook-shaped end 15 adapted to engage in, a recess 16 formed in one of the top plates 10. The locking rod 14 is adapted to hold the doors 11 and 12 in a closed position, until it is desired to empty the contents of the compartment or receptacle 9 as will be presently described.

The inclined top plates 10, 10 are provided with a plurality of longitudinally disposed openings 17, 17, and as the top plates l0 are identical in construction, I deem it only necessary to describe one of said plates. Upon the sides of the openings 17 are arranged guide ways 18, 18, said guide ways having vertically disposed flanges 19, which are out away to form slots 20, 2O and rails 21, 21. The rear ends of the vertical flanges 19 are bent over to form horizontal iianges 22, 22. Slidably mounted between each set of guide Ways 18 is a closure plate 23 adapted to close the opening 17 between the guide ways. The forward edge of the closure plate is bent upwardly to form a transverse lip 24 while the side edges of the closure plate are provided with outwardly extending lugs 25, 25 adapted to slide upon the rails 21, 21 of the guide ways 18, 18, and when the closure plate is closed en age in the slots 20, 20 of said guide ways. The sides of the body 8 of the wagon near their upper edges are provided with longitudinally disposed rods 26, 26, said rods being supported in brackets 27, 27 carried by the sides of the wagon. in connection with my improved wagon, I use a garbage can 29 having a bail or handle 30. The two diametrically opposed edges of the can are provided with guide ways 31, 31 in which slides a lip 32 adapted to close the can 29. The one edge of the lid is provided with a downwardly extending flange 33 and the top of the lid adjacent to the flange is provided with upwardly extending cleats 34, 34. The top edge of the can opposite the flanged edge of the lid 32 is provided with a hooleshaped flan e 35, the object of which will be presentlyT described. The cans 29 are employed for transferring the garbage from a residence or the like building to my improved wagon, and when being so used, the lids 32 'are adapted to remain in a closed position to prevent odors and fumes from escaping from the garbage contained within the cans. By transferring the contents of a can to the compartmentor receptacle 9 of the wagon, the operator of the wagon places the cleats 34, 34 of the lid 32 of the can in engagement with one ofthe rods 2G, and tilts the can over to an inverted position upon the top plate 10 of the wagon. When in this position, the hook-shaped fiange 35 of the can 29 is ada ted to engage over the lip 24 of the closure p ate 33, which normally' closes one of the openings 17 of the Wagon. The bails 3() of each can are made of a sufficient size to permit of them being swung over the bottom of the can, when the same is inverted, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings.

To discharge the contents of the can 29 into the compartment or receptacle 9 of the wagon, the can is new pushed forwardly o ening the closure plate 23 while the lid 32 o the can is being held stationary by the cleats 34, 34 of said lid engaging one of the rods 26. This operation brings the open can directly above one of the openings 17 of the Wagon and permits of the contents of the can dropping into the compartmentor recelptacle 9 thereof. By moving the can to tie top edge of the wagon, the closure plate 23 is closed and is limited in its movement by the lugs 25, 25 engaging in the slots 20, 20 of the guide ways 18, 13. By thus swinging the cans to an u right position, the hooksha ed iiange 35 1s removed from the lip 24 of tIie closure plate, and then the can 29 is removed from the rod 26. The fiange 33 of the lid 32 of the can has been provided to prevent the inward movement of the lid and prevent it from passing right through the guide ways 31, 31 of the can 2Q.

In Fig. 1 of the drawings, I have illustrated one of the lids 32 as being larger than the rest of the lids, to cover a larger opening, said opening being provided to permit of certain waste products being placed in the garbage wagon that could not otherwise be placed therein, th'rougl'i the openings 17.

The body 3 of the wagon, which is detach ably mounted upon the horizontal frame 5 is bodily removed when it is desired to enrl'ity the same. To accomplish this a conventional form of derrick or crane (not shown) is employed, the lifting chains 36, 36 of said derrick or crane being connected to the hooks or eye- lets 28, 28 of the wagon. After the body has been removed from the frame, it is tilted to the position shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings7 and the doors 1 l and 12 opened, to permit of the contents thereof being discharged into a suitable erematory or the like place.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings, it will be apparent that I have devised a perfectly sanitary garbage wagon which can be readily used without causing any discomfort to the persons operating the wagon or those in the vicinity of the same,

Such changes in the details of construction, as are permissible by the appended claims, may be resorted to without departing from the s irit and scope of the invention.

The combination with a running gear, of a body conforming to the shape thereof and detachably mounted thereon, said body hav ing over-lapping doors on one end thereof, means carrled by one of said doors for locking said doorsin closed position, openings arranged in the top of said body, guide ways having slots, said guide ways being mounted on each side of said openings, a lid slidable in said guide ways and adapted to engage in said slots in their closed position, and means for operating said sliding lid, said means comprisin a bucket having flanged side walls, a lidl slidable in said flanges, cleats carried by said lid, a side rail carried by said body, said cleats ada ted to engage with said side rail, said buc iet adapted-to operate said sliding lids through the medium of a flange on that side of said bucket which abuts said lids, said bucket being slidable on its own lid.
