To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, AUGUs'r A. HAnNison- 1 FEGER, a citizenv of the United States, residing in New York, in the borough of Manhattan, county and State of New York, have invented certain new. and useful Improvements in Suspension-Clamps for Bacon, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improved Io clamp for suspendingbacon in the smokehouse.

Heretofore the pieces of bacon were suspended for smoking, by a cord )assing through a hole pierced in one end. he suspension-cord produced the deformation in the suspension-end of the piece of bacon, so that when cutting up the same Jfor use this perforated 'end-piece was usually thrown away as it could not be cut into uniform 2o slices.

The object of this invention is to furnish a suspension-clamp by which the bacon can be suspended without any change in sliape and loss of material; and for this purpose the 2 5 invention consists of a clamp which is formed of two spring-actuated jaws provided with inwardly-bent edges, a hook attached to the upper end of the jaw-connecting piece, and a lin moving over the jawsior lholding the 3o same in compressed state on the end of the piece of bacon.

The invention consists further of certain details of construction which will be fully described hereinafter and finally pointed out in 3 5 the claim.

'Referring to the drawings, a, al are two jaws which are connected at their upper ends by a transverse piece a2, the j aw a being made integral with said connecting-piece a2, while the jaw (L1 is hinged to the same, as shown at a3. The jaws are provided with narrow Shanks a4, a5 and enlarged lower en ds c, e7, the

l The lower edge of the 'jaw al is provided with an inwardly-bent sharpened edge b, while the lower end of the jaw ais also bent inwardly and provided with a number of sharp teeth or serrations b1. `A iiat spring e 6c isattached to the shank of the stationary jaw a and presses by its free end on the shank of the movable jaw so as to force the same in outward direction. Both jaws are perforated by a number of holes h so as to give access of the smoke to the end of the piece of bacon clamped by the jaws. The shanks of the jaws are preferably bent up immediately above said holes, so as to form transverse projections or ridges f for retaining a locking- 7o link d that embraces the Shanks of thejaws and holds them firmly in position on the piece of bacon whichl is to be suspended therefrom. To the transverse head a2 of the jaws is riveted a hook g, which is located at 5 right angles to the vertical center-plane of the jaws, so as to permit the suspension of j the clamp from a rod r. For this purpose the shank of the hook is passed through a transverse slit in the upper part or head of 8o the jaws, and the end bent over to the underside of the same and connected thereto by soldering or otherwise. The hook g is provided at its upper end with an opening o adapted to fit over suitable pins q on the suspension-'rod 1.

My improved suspension-clamp is applied to the end of the piece of bacon by moving the link in upward direction toward the head of the jaws so that the spring will spread the 9a same to permit the insertion of the piece of bacon, the toothed jaw is pressed firmly into the body of the piece of bacon, and the link permitted to move down over the Shanks so as to interlock with opposite projections f and firmly hold the jaws on the bacon. When the bacon is to be removed from the smokehouse, the link is moved in upward direction over the jaws so that the latter spread apart by the tension of the interposed spring and loo permit the piece of bacon to be removed. It will then only show the small holes that have been made by the teeth of the jaw, but otherwise show no traces of the suspension-clamp be cut up for use to the very last piece without any loss.

The entire clamp is preferably made of sheet-steel and galvanized so as to prevent I corrosion of the same while in use. 1 1 o on the same. The piece of bacon can thus Having thus described my invention, I Claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

A clamp for suspending bacon, comprising 5 a transverse connecting-piece having a jaw made integral therewith, a second jaw hinged to said connecting-piece, the Shanks of said jaws being provided with holes and bent up immediately above said holes to form ridges,

1o a spring interposed between said jaws and normallyT spreading the same, arid-:Mink embracing the Shanks of said jaws and maintained in position by said ridges.
