To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HERBERT G. UNDER- WOOD, of Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Casting Apparatus, of which the followingis a specification.
The invention forming the subject-matter of this present application is divisional of my prior application filed June 17, 1897, renewed Jan. 11, 1900, Serial No. 1,145, and comprises certain novel combinations and constructions in casting apparatus, as hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
The accompanying drawings illustrate an apparatus designed and chosen for explanation of this invention, and in these drawings: Figure 1 is a front elevation, partly in section, of the apparatus; and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a slightly modified construction of said apparatus.
A is a melting pot, or other source of supply for the material to be cast, said part A being shown as having a top or cover B C is a cylinder or chamber supported by the top or cover B within the pot A and the molten material therein, and provided with inletand outlet-ports c c; D is a plunger actuated by a lever d for forcing the material from the cylinder or chamber C through the outlet-port c; and E is a substantially upright exit-port or nozzle communicating with the port a".
The parts thus far described, comprise the means for supplying the material to be cast, and are eachof suitable or desirable form, size and construction.
The remaining parts of my apparatus form the mold supporting and manipulating means.
In the illustrated embodiment of my in- ,vention, F is a supporting member, G a mold number of sections or parts, here shown as two, is mounted directly on the supporting member F, and is preferably provided with an ingate 9 opening from the face of the mold opposed to the supporting member F, and normally registering with the port or orifice f. During the entrance of the material to be cast, said mold is firmly pressed rectilinearly, or in a right line, toward the opposing face of the member F and the exit-port E by the clamping member J and the movable means connected thereto.
The clamping member J is movable rectilinearly toward and from the supporting member F, being usually provided with openings or guides for receiving the standard H and the rods F. Then the clamping member is in its operative position, the 0pposing faces of said clamping member and the stops f are considerably separated, and, consequently, the member J is free to move independently of the support F until the 0pposing faces of the parts J' f are engaged, whereupon the supporting and clamping members F J move together. The clampin member J is here shown as movable into an out of its operative position by a lever N pivoted at M and provided with an arm K movable into engagement with a stop 73, and con nected by a link K to said clamping member. When the clamping member J is in its operative position, the pivot l for connecting the arm K and the link K is alined with the pivot M and the pivot for connecting the other end of the link K to the clamping member J, thus firmly locking said member J in position during the entrance of the material to be cast.
In the illustrated construction of my invention, I use two standards H, arms K,'and links K, butit will be obvious to those skilled in the art, that one of each of said standards, arms and links may be omitted if desired, as illustrated in my pending application, Serial No. 1,145. In Fig. 1, the standards H are supported at their lower ends by the top or cover B, and serve to support at their upper end, apart I to which the lever N is pivoted, but in Fig. 2, the standards H and the lever article.
N, are supported by an arm B projecting laterally from a standard B rising from the top or cover B.
In the use of this invention, the two sections or parts of the mold G are detachably engaged, respectively, with the supporting and clamping members F J, the free end of the lever N is moved downwardly, thus permitting the supporting and clamping members to move downwardly toward the exitport E until the supporting member reaches the limit of its downward movement, Whereupon the clamping member moves downwardly independently of the supporting member until the mold is closed and the arm K engages the stop *5. The clamping member J then firmly presses the mold as a whole toward the contiguous face of the supporting member F and the exit-port or nozzle E, and the pivots Z lock the clamping member J in its operative position. After the formation of the cast article in the mold, the free end of the lever N is raised, elevating the clamping member J, and the section of the mold secured thereto independently of the supporting member- F and the remaining portion. of the mold and permitting access to the cast During the upward movement of theclampin member J, the opposing faces of the mem er J and the stops f are engaged, whereupon the supporting member moves upwardly with the part J withdrawing the port f from the exit-port or nozzle E. These several operations can obviously be completed with minimum effort and maximum rapidity. I
The construction and operation of my casting apparatus will now be readily understood upon reference to the foregoing description and the accompanying drawing, and it will i be obvious that more or less change may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts thereof/without departing from the spirit of my invention. Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a casting apparatus, a source of supply for the material to be cast, an exit-port H for communicating with thesource of supply, a sectional mold. havingan ingate for com-' municating with the exit-port, means for forcing the material from the exit-port through the ingate into the mold, a supporting member for the mold movable rectilinearly toward. and from the exit-port, and a clamping member connected to a section of the mold, said clamping member being movable rectilinearly toward and from the supporting member a limited distance and being movable with the supporting member, and means for moving the clamping member for ative position, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a casting apparatus, a source of supply for the material to be cast, an eXit-port for communicating with the source of supply, a sectional mold having an ingate for communicating with the exit-port, means for forcing the material from the exit-port through the ingate into the mold, a supporting member for the mold, a clamping member connected to a section of the mold, means connecting the clamping member to the supporting member for moving the supporting member with the clamping member and permitting a limited movement-of the clamping member independently of the supporting member, and means for moving the clamping member into and out of its operative position, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. In a casting apparatus, a source of supply for the material to be cast, an exit-port for communicating With the source of supply, a sectional mold having an ingate for comvmunicating with the exit-port, means for forcing the material from the exit port through the ingate into the mold, a supporting member for the mold movable toward and from the exit-port and provided with engaging means, a clamping member connected to one of the sections of the mold and movable into and out of operative engagement with said engaging means, and movable means connected to the clampin member for operating the same, substantially as and for the purpose specified. 4. In a casting apparatus, a source of suply for the material to be cast, an exit-port or communicatin with the source of supply, a sectional mold aving an ingate for communicating with the exit-port, means for forcing the material ,from the exitport through the ingate into the mold, a standard fixed relatively to the exit-port, a supporting member for the mold guided alon the standard, a clamping member guide along the standard, means connecting the clamping member to the supporting member for moving the supporting member'with the clamping member and permitting a limited move ment of one ofsaid membersindependently of the other, and movable means connected toone of said members for operating the same, substantially as and for the purpose specified. 5. In a casting apparatus, a source of supply for the material to be cast, an exit port for communicating with the source of supply, a sectional mold having an ingate for communicating with the exit-port, means for forcing the material from the eXitport through the ingate into the mold, means for operating the same into and out of its opermoving one of the sections toward and from initial movement of the first section coacting the exit port, and means inactive during the in g, witnesses at New York in the county of New York in the State of New York this 4th 10 with the second section during the final part day of December, 1902.
