To ctZZ whom it mwyconcerm Be it known that I, EDGAR RoUsE SUT- CLIFFE, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Leigh, in the county of Lancaster, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brickmaking- Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the construction of 'means for enabling the plunger of a brickmachine to enter and leave the molds in a revolving table without the risk of damage to the machine.
It is more especially applicable to the apparatus for which an American patent, numbered 744,430, has been granted to me and to which it is shown attached, though it also is capable of being adapted to other machines having a revolving table.
It is found in forming bricks or blocks up on which a very great pressure is brought to bear that better results are obtained if both a top and a bottom pressure on the material is used. This necessitates the top plunger entering the mold in the revolving table, and so great are the forces made use of in machines of this class that serious damage to the apparatus may result if the table is not exactlyin position for the plunger to enter the mold when brought under the press-head or if the table commences to revolve before the plunger is clear of the mold.
The object of this invention is to construct apparatus which allows of a top pressure being exerted on the material by the top plunger entering the mold, and thus of obtaining a better pressed brick or block.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the invention applied to a revolving-table brickmachine.
Figure l shows in side elevation the toggle mechanism connected with the top and loottom plungers and the safety apparatus. Fig. 2is a plan of the safety apparatus. Fig. 3 shows the safety apparatus formed with slotted links and the dummy mold-box. Fig. 4 is a front view of Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is a plan view of the dummy mold-box.
It will be seen on reference to Fig. l that Athe top plunger 0 is just within the mold in the table 12, being supported therein by the bottom plunger 8 and the compressed material, and that before the table can move on the top plunger must be raised. This is accomplished by means of the bowls i g', interposed in the path of the extensions 7L and ig of the toggle-joint pin 45. As the crank 10 in its rotation moves the connecting-rod 3 to the left these pins h and ;g surmount the bowls i and y', and the toggle-joint being connected with the plunger mechanism raise the plunger clear of the table while moving on to bring the next mold into position. The bowls 'i and j are supported by a bracket a, which is supported at one end by the screwed eyelet-rods b and c, iixed in the bracketsf, attached to a stationary part of the machine framing and so that they are adjustable therein by means of their screwed ends, and the lock-nuts thereon. The other end of the bracket a is supported by pins d e, ixed to the framing about which the bracket can turn as about a hinge to allow of the adjustment of the front end. Since the bottom plunger 8 may push up the material above the surface of the table before the descent of the to'p -plunger o, a dummy mold pis provided, which surrounds the top plunger and is kept in con'- tact with the surface of the table by springs r r, (see Figs. 4 and 5,) working in the recesses g g. The material is thus retained and may be pushed back into the mold proper by the top plunger. Instead of springs lugs may be provided on the machine to prevent the molds p rising. The plunger 0 having been raised after pressing the table is moved on until the next mold comes beneath the presshead, and in order to make sure that the mold-opening is exactly beneath the plunger for the next pressing, a series of holes are made near the edge of the table and a peg -7c is provided attached to the mechanism operated by the pin l4,which raises and lowers the preliminary plunger 6. This pin is tapered at its end and is provided with a spring m behind it, pushing on the collar Z, so that as the hole reaches the peg the tapered part enters, and upon the spring forcing the whole peg into the hole the table will be drawn exactly to the position for the plunger to enter the mold. rI'he pin remains in the hole until the rise of the preliminary plunger, when the pin is also withdrawn.
A modified form of apparatus for raising the plunger is shown in Figs. 3 and 4, where instead of bowls xed pins t t are held in brackets u u, attached to a stationary part of the machine. On the toggle-joint pin 4,5 on each side of the toggle rods s s are pivoted,
being provided at their bottom ends with I-'r'o IOO slots v, which work over the pins t t. Upon the connecting-rod moving to the left the pins will come against the ends of the slots and upon the continued movement of the connecting-rod will raise the pin 45 vertically, as the pin 45 is connected to the plunger o. This also will be raised clear of the table, which can then move on for the next mold to be pressed. By this means the great advantages accruing irom both a top and a bottom pressure on the material are obtained, and all risk of injury from premature movement of the table is prevented, since the table is turned by the same shaft which eii'ects the raising or the plunger.
I am aware that prior to my invention pressing-machines have been made with stops entering a notch in a'revolving table. I therefore do not claim such a combination, broadly; but
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters ratent, is-
1. In a brick-press, a revolving mold-table, plungers entering molds therein from the top and also from the bottom, means for causing pressure to be applied to the said plungers, iiXed pivots attached to a stationary part of the machine, pins attached to a movable part connected to one oi' the plungers, so that they come into sliding contact either directly or indirectly, with the lixed pivots and thereby raise the plunger clear of the mold.
2. In a brick-press, a revolving inold-table, plungers entering molds therein Vfrom the top and also from the bottom, means for causing pressure to be applied to the said plungers, 'liXed pivots attached to a stationary part of the machine, pins attached to a movable part connected to one of the plungers, holes in the revolving table, and a spring-operated pin carried by a movable part of the pressing mechanism.
3. In a brick-press, a revolving mold-table, plungers entering molds therein l'rom the top and also i'roin the bottom, means for causing pressure to be applied to the said plungers, fixed pivots attached to a stationary part of the machine, pins attached to a movable part connected to one of the plungers, a dummy mold surrounding the top plunger, and means for keeping the said dummy mold in contact with the surface of the revolving table.
4. In a brick-press, a revolving mold-table, plungers entering molds therein from the top and also l'rom the bottom, means for causing pressure to be applied to the said plungers, a pivoted bracket supported at one end on adjustable eyebolts, iixed pins carried by the bracket with bowls thereon, and pins on the pressing mechanism supporting the top plunger adapted to slide over the said bowls, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5. In a brick-press, a revolving mold-table, plungers entering molds therein from the top and also from the bottom, a system of toggle-levers arranged to operate said plungers, rollers mounted adjacent said top plunger, and pins carried by said plunger mechanism and adapted to be thrust over said rollers to raise said plunger, substantially as described.
6. In a brick-press, a revolving mold-table, plungers entering molds therein from the top and also from the bottom, a system oi' toggle-levers connected to the top plunger and operating between the upper and lower vcross-heads of a tension system, a pivoted bracket supported at one end on adjustable eyebolts, lixed pins carried by the bracket with bowls thereon, and pins forming extensions of one ofthe toggle-joint spindles.
7. In a brick-press, a revolving mold-table, plungers entering molds therein trom the top and also from the bottom, mechanism for operating said plungers, a bracket mounted adjacent said top plunger mechanism, rollers mounted in said bracket, iiXed pins arranged in said plunger mechanism, and means for operating said mechanism to thrust said pins over said rollers to raise said top plunger, substantially as described.

In a brick-press, a revolving mold-table, plungers entering molds therein from the top and also from the bottom, means for causing pressure to be applied to the said plungers, a pivoted bracket supported at one end on adjustable eyebolts, iiXed pins carried by the bracket with bowls thereon, pins on the pressing mechanism supporting the top plunger adapted to slide over the said bowls, holes in the revolving table, and a spring-operated pin carried by a movable part of the pressing mechanism.
9. Iii a brick-press, a revolving moldtable, plungers entering molds therein from the top and also from the bottom, mechanism for operating said plungers, rollers mounted adjacent said top plunger mechanism, fixed pins arranged in said mechanism, means for operating said plunger mechanism to thrust said pins over said rollers to raise said top plunger, said revolving table being provided with recesses adjacent the molds, and a spring-operated pin carried by said plunger mechanism and adapted to engage witliin said recesses to aline said plunger with the corresponding mold, substantially as described.
10. In a brick-press, a revolving moldtable, plungers entering molds therein from the top and also from the bottom, means for causing pressure to be applied to the said plungers, a pivoted bracket supported at one end on adjustable eyebolts, fixed pins carried by the bracket with bowls thereon, pins on the pressing mechanism supporting the top plunger adapted to slide over the said bowls,

a dummy mold surrounding the top plunger, and springs for keeping the dummy mold in contact With the surface of the table.

12. In a brick-press, a revolving moldtable, plungers entering molds therein from the top and also from the bottom, means for causing pressure to be applied to the said plungers, a pivoted bracket supported at one end on adjustable eyebolts, fixed pins carried by the bracketwith bowls thereon, pins on the pressing mechanism supporting the top plunger adapted to slide over the said bowls, holes in the revolving table, a springoperated pin carried by a movable part of the pressing mechanism, a -dummy mold surrounding the top plunger, and springs for keeping the dummy mold in contact With the surface of the table.

In a brick-press, a revolving moldtable, plungers entering molds therein from the top and also from the bottom., mechanism for operating' said plungers, a dummy mold surrounding the top plunger, springs arranged to keep said mold in contact With said table, rollers mounted adjacent the top plunger mechanism, and pins carried by said plunger mechanism and adapted to be thrust over said rollers to raise said plunger, substantially as described.
14. In a brick-press, a revolving moldtable, plungers entering molds therein from the top and also from the bottom, mechanism for operating said plunger, a dummy mold surrounding the top plunger, springs arranged to keep said mold in contact With said table, rollers mounted adjacent the top plunger mechanism, pins carried by said plunger mechanism and adapted to be thrust over said rollers to raise said plunger, said revolving table being provided With recesses adjacent the molds, and a spring-operated pin carried by said plunger mechanism and adapted to engage Within said recesses to aline said plungers with the corresponding mold, substantially as described.
