Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JAMES H. McPART- LAND, of Houlton, county of Aroostook, State of Maine, have invented an Improvement in Heating Apparatus, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates toheating apparatuses adapted for hot water or steam, and has for its object to provide the apparatus with two fire pots, either one or both of which may be used as desired; also to construct the apparatus of a plurality of independent upright water containing sections adapted to be abutted and secured together, each section having an inlet and an outlet, and also having means, whereby open communicationbetween the several sections is established at the top and bottom of'the apparatus; also to so construct the sections as to provide the ash-pit and fire-pot and passages leading from the fire-pot to the chimney flue.
Figure 1 shows in front elevation a heating apparatus embodying this invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the heating apparatus shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal, vertical section of the heating apparatus shown in Fig. 1, taken on the dotted line 3*3. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal, vertical section of the heating apparatus shown in Fig. 1 taken on the dotted line 44. Fig. 5 is a vertical section of the front end section of the apparatus taken on the dotted line 5-5, Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a vertical section of one of the intermediate sections taken on the dotted line 6-6, Fig. 2-. Fig. 7 is a detail showing the means of communication between the sections.
The upright section, at the front end of the apparatus, is made as an open frame, see Fig. 5, comprising a top port on a, which is preferably curved, upright side portions a, a a bottom portion or base of, an upright middle portion a extending from the bottom to the top of the section, and a plurality of horizontal portions between the side portions, which connect them with the middle portion, one of which, as a, is located between the ash-pit and the fire-pot, and the remainder, as (1 are located above the fire-pot, short distances apart. All of said portions are made hollow and are in open communication with each other, as shown. The several portions may be made of different shapes in cross section, as shown in Fig. 3, but this is not material.

The said front end section has an inlet a at the bottom and an outlet c at the top for the water, if the apparatus is to be employed as a hot water heating apparatus, otherwise these inlets and outlets may be differently arranged. The said front end section, at the top, has a hole through its rear wall, at a which is located directly opposite a like hole in the front wall of the next section, and a push nipple a is fitted into said hole, so that communication at the top of the section with the top of the next section is established, and said front end section also has a hole through its rear Wall at the bottom, which is located directly opposite a like hole in the front wall of the next section, and a push nipple (1 is fitted into said hole so that communication at the bottom of the section with the bottom of the next section is established. Other like communicating passages may be provided between the sections if desired, but other than these or like communicating passages there is no communication between the sections.
The upright intermediate sections are like wise made as open frames, see Fig. 6, comprising a top portion 1), which is preferably curved, upright side portions 1), 6 a bottom portion or base 5 an upright middle portion extending from the bottom to the top of the section and a plurality of horizontal portions 19 between the side portions which connect them with the middle portion, and which are located above the fire-pot, short distances apart. All of said portions are made hollow and are in open communication with each other, as shown. The several portions may be made of different shapes in cross section, as best shown in Fig. 3, but this is not material. The upright side portions 7), 6 are provided with lugs b, on which the grate rests. The upright middle portion b divides the section into two entirely separate vertical compartments like the front end section. The intermediate section has an inlet b at the bottom and an outlet b at the top, for the water, like the front end section, or it may have other inlets and outlets otherwise arranged. Each intermediate section has, at its top, a hole through both the front and rear walls, which are oppositely disposed and which are located opposite a like hole at a in the rear wall of the front end section, and push nipples are fitted into said holes when the several sections are abutted together, to thereby establish open communication between the several sections at the top of the apparatus. Each intermediate section also has at its bottom a hole through both the front and rear walls which are oppositely disposed and which are located opposite a like hole at a in the rear wall of the front end section and push nipples are fitted into said holes when the sections are abutted together, to thereby establish open communication between the several sections at the bottom of the apparatus. If desired other like communicating passages may be provided between the sections. The upright section at the rear end of the apparatus is made substantially like the front end section, except thatthe ash-pit and fire-pot doors are omitted, and a clean-out door (1 provided. The apparatus will comprise as many upright sections as desired, and they will be abutted together and secured in any suitable manner, as for instance by bolts 0 and 0 extending through the sections at the top and bottom thereof, and by bolts 0 passing through ears formed on the sections. For simplicity of construction these long bolts 0 and 0 may pass through the openings which are provided between the several sections, but it is not material. The several upright sections are made of the same size and the several hollow portions thereof are similarly disposed so that when the several sections are abutted together like portions thereof will be abutted together and the spaces between the horizontal portionsofl, b will form horizontal passages for the products. of combustion which extend for substantially the entire length of the apparatus, it being understood that said horizontal portions when abutted together will be arranged in rows extending lengthwise the apparatus. When the several upright sections are abutted together it will be observed that two separate fire-pots are provided and two separate ash-pits, and either one or both may be used as desired.
Some of the horizontal portions 6 of the several sections are made narrower than the .full thickness of the sections, so as to provide of combustion, as shown in Fig. 3, wherein it will be seen that-the lowermost horizontal portions 6 of all the intermediate sections are made narrow to provide several passages for the products of combustion just above the fire-pot; that one of the horizontal portions 6 of the next row of horizontal portions of the several sections is made narrow to provide a single passage at one end of the horizontal passage which is provided between the rows to thereby establish communication be tween the two horizontal passages; that one of the horizontal portions 5 of the next row of horizontal portions is also made narrow to provide another single passage at the opposite end of the horizontal pass age between the rows, and so on. The products of combustion of the fire-pot, therefore, enter the lowermost horizontal passage directly above the fire-pot through numerous inlets and escape therefrom through a single outlet at or near one end thereof, and then passing back and forth through the remaining horizontal passages finally escape through an outlet tho the chimney flue. It will be observed that as all the portions of each independent upright section are in open communication that when one fire-pot alone is used the water contained in all of said portions will be heated just the same as when both fire-pots are in use, although, of course, the water will be more moderately heated.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a heating apparatus, a plurality of sections each having water containing portions above and around two fire-pots, substantially as described.
2. In a heating apparatus, a plurality of sections each having water containing portions above and around two fire-pots and two ash-pits, substantially as described.
3. In a heating apparatus, a plurality of sections each having water containing portions above and around two fire-pots and an inlet and an outlet and communicating passages between the sections, substantially as described.
4. In a heating apparatus, a plurality of upright sections having abutting faces, each section having water containing portions above and around two fire-pots and an inlet and an outlet and communicating passages between the sections, substantially as described.
5. In a heating apparatus, a plurality of upright sections having abutting faces, each having water containing portions above and around two fire pots, and each having an inlet and an outlet and communicating passages between the sections at the upper and lower ends thereof, and means for securing said sections together, substantially as described.
6. In a heating apparatus, a plurality of abutting sections, each comprising top and bottom portions, upright side portions, an upright middle portion and a plurality of intermediate horizontal portions between each side portion and the middle portion, all of munication and disposed to provide two ashsaid portions being hollow and in open com- I pits, two fire-pots and two sets of communicating passages for the products of combustion in open communication respectively with the two fire-pots, substantially as described.
7. In a heating apparatus, a plurality of abutting sections, each comprising top and bottom portions, upright side portions, an upright middle portion and a plurality of intermediate horizontal portions between each side portion and the middle portion, all of said portions being hollow and in open cominum'cation and disposed to provide two ashpits, two fire-pots and two sets of communicating passages for the products of combustion in open communication respectively with the two fire-pots, inlets and outlets for the sections, and communicating passages between the sections at the upper and lower ends thereof, substantially as described.
