To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ULYSSES GRANT GAL- BRAITH, a citizen of the United. States, residing at Sedalia, in the county of Pettis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Securing Charts to Stringed Instruments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in devices for securing charts to stringed instruments, and more particularly to that class of instruments having frets, and my object is to provide a device which may be disposed over the neck of the instrument and below the strings and in such manner that the device will not interfere with the playing qualities of the instrument, and at the same time, in such manner that certain characters upon the face of the device will be exposed to view.

A further object is to provide means for securing the device to the instrument, whereby the characters upon the device will be directed to the proper point below the strings.

Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanyingdrawings which are made a part of this application, Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved device removed from the instrument. Fig. 2 is a similar view on an enlarged scale, showing the same disposed in position upon the instrument, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the instrument, showing my improved device secured in position thereon.

Referring to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 indicates the body of the device, upon which is adapted to be disposed my improved form of instruction chart, such as will enable any one to find the proper note at a glance. The body portion 1 is preferably constructed of thin pliable material, such as linen, muslin, aluminium or the like, and is provided at each edge with strips 2, these strips being provided at intervals with perforations 3, which are adapted to be disposed over suitable retaining pins 4 carried by the neck and body of the instrument 5.

The body 1 is provided throughout its length with a plurality of slots 6, which are equal in number and spaced apart to coincide with the number of frets 7 upon the neck of the instrument, so that when the body 1 is disposed in position below the strings S, the frets 7 will protrude through the slots 6, thereby disposing the body portion below the upper edge of the frets and flat upon the face of the neck, so that when the strings are depressed they will not come into engagement with the body.

The strips 2 are severed. at a point in'their length, as shown at 9, so that that portion of the strips along the neck of the instrument may be folded down along the side thereof and into engagement with the retaining pins at, while the remainder of the strips 9 extend over the body of the instrument and engage similar retaining pins 4. on the upper surface 7 5 thereof.

By this construction it will be seen that the chart may be readily disposed upon the instrument, and it is my intentions to have a chart provided for each piece of music to be So played, so that any one may soon learn. to play the most difficult music, it being clearly i understood, of course, that the music is marked similar to the chart, so that the player will readily know the next note to be sounded.

The combination with a stringed instru ment having a plurality of frets thereon, of a body portion having slots to receive said 0 frets, strips hingedly secured at each edge of said body portion and having perforations therethrough, said strips being severed transversely to their length and retaining pins on said instrument adapted to engage said per- 5 forations and secure the body portion in position.
