To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, DAVID E. FoRoE, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, (whose post-oflice address is 156 Monticello avenue, Jersey City,

-New Jersey,) have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Piano-Keyboard Charts and Guards, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to music charts and l more particularly to a chart for pianos, or

other musical instruments having a keyboard. I The principal object of my invention is to .provide a combined music chart and guard for pianos which is adapted to be reversed whereby the same may beused as a guard to prevent scratching of the musical instrument by the fingers of the player, or as a music chart.

Another object of this invention is to provide an appliance and guard which is pro- .vided upon one side with an ornamental design or cover.

Still another object of the invention is to provide an appliance of the above mentioned character which may be easily and quickly applied to any piano keyboard or like instrument.

An additional object of my invention is to provide a combined music chart and guard which consists of few parts, is inexpensiveto manufacture and which may be placed on the market at a comparatively low cost.

The above and other objects will bespecifically set forth in the following spec1fication and the invention will be illustrated in the accompanying drawing and defined in the appended claim.

Figure 1 is a view of a piano having my invention arranged on the keyboard of the same.

Like characters of reference indicate like parts in all the views.

Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral 5 designates a piano of any improved type which includes the usual keyboard 6, in back of which is the usual polished board 7.

The improved chart and guard consists of a longitudinal strip 8 which may be of paste-board, celluloid or any other material having a suitable stiffness. Printed on one face of the strip 8 adjacent the left hand lower edge thereof is a base staff 9 upon which are printed the notes 10 which extend from C below the staff to E above the staff. Also printed on the strip 8 at theupper right hand edge is the treble stafi' 11 and also has notes 10 thereon which extend from G below the staff to G above the stafi. The inner ends of these stafis overlap each other.

Secured to the other face of the strip 8 is an ornamental covering 12 which is secured to the same by means of any suitable adhesive. This covering may be of any suitable cloth or leather or the like.

When in use as a music chart, the appliance is arranged behind the outer edges of the black keys of the keyboard and against the board 7 of the piano and centrally of the keyboard with each of the respective notes 10 of the staffs 9 and 10 in alinement with the corresponding key of the piano keyboard. When it is desired to use the appliance as a guard, it is simply reversed whereby the ornamental side 12 is. exposed to view.

From the foregoing description, it will be manifest that should a person have difficulty in reading a certain note in the music that he is playing, he simply refers to the corresponding note on the chart which is in alinement with the piano keys whereby he. can readily distinguish the name of the note, and position of the note on the piano keyboard.

While I have disclosed what now seems to be the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible to various changes and alterations that may fall within the scope of the appended claim.

-What I claim is:

A two-piece reversible piano key-board chart and piano guard comprising two 1ongitudinal strips, said strips being of different materials and closely secured together back back to present the appearance of a single integral strip, one side of said combined and secured strips having musical indicia thereon, said indicia comprising two staves respectively bearing the bass and treble clefs and notes on the staves, said notes spaced longitudinally so that they may bebrought into registry with the corresponding keys of a piano, the op osite side of said combined strip being 0 material serving as a shield to protect the piano and adapted to be used as a finger guard and embellishment when said strip is reversed, said combined strip being freely removable and having a thickness to snugly fit between the inner ends of the black keys and the adacent longitudinal board of the piano.
