My invention relates to iinpro'v'ements in cutters for heavy material, and it more particulariy relates to a device adapted to the cutting oi leather belts.
The ob iect of my invention is to provide a small and inexpensive device oi this character for the use of dealers in belts and for use in factories employing belts.
in cutting heavy leather belts by dealers and users, who are ol course not equipped with the heavy machinery used by belt manufacturers for this purpose, dillieulty has been experienced with the small devices usually employed for this purpose for the reason that it has been hard to maintain the proper relation. between the belt and the cutter so as to to obtain a straight cut.
In the machine which i have devised if have provided means for securely holding the belt and cotter in proper working rela tion so that the cutting knife can readily be drawn through the length of the belt without any particular care on the part of the oper atfit.
The invention consists in the constructions and combinations of parts hereinafter described and set forth in the claims.

Extending through the said above the base rod is a guide rod, l 3; this rod being rounded on one side to conform to the shape of the opening, 13. in each of the gages, and fisttcned on the opposite side, shown. Adjusting screws, 14 and 15, are provided in the respective gages to form stops for the rod 12. This construction of the guide rod permits of two adiustinents with reference to the base rod, 1, by simply turning the rod so as to permit the rounded portion to rest eiiher in the upper or lower parts of the round openings. In the position shown in Fig. i it is adjusted to accommodate a belt ol single thickness, while in the position shown in Fig. 2 ii is adiusted for a belt of double thickness.
in the operation ol the device, the gage will be first adjusted to the position on the base rod determined by the graduations for cutting the width of strip desired. For instance, if it is desired to cut a strip four inches wide, the gage will be set at the 4 inch graduation. The distance between the two rods is also determined so that the rod 12 will act simply as a guide or stop for the belt and will have no binding eli'ect thereon. After the end of the belt has been worked sullieiently past the knife it is secured in some suitable way and the operator. by gras iing the handles, can then readily draw the indie through the entire length of the belt. .01", if desired, the cutter itself can be secured and the belt drawn through in a manner which will be readily understood.
Inasmuch as the device is especially adapted for cutting belts, which are usually in ads in two thicknesses only, we have shown the rod 12 capable of two adjustments. It is obvious, however, that the device might be used for other pnrposes which would require further sdjustrnents'ol' the guide rod.

This could be readily accomplished. by making an elongated slot in each of the gages and providing adjustable supporting blocks for the guide rod in a well known manner; these blocks being adapted to be adjusted up and down in the slots by the adjusting screws 14 and 15 in any well known manner.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim:
1. In a cutter for flexible material, a base rod, a cutting knife supported on said base rod, an adjustable gage on said base rod on 1 each side of said knife, and a guide-rod supported in said gages parallel with said base rod, substantially and. for the purpose specified.
2. In a cutter for flexible material, a base rod, a knife supported thereon, an adjustable gage on each side of said knife, a guide rod supported in said gages parallel with said base rod, and means for adjusting the distance between the respective base and guide rods, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. In a cutter for flexible material, a base rod, an angularly projecting knife supported in a lateral projection on said base rod, a gage on said base rod located on each side of said. knife, with means for adjustably securing said gages in different positions on said base rod, graduations on said base rod on one side of said knife, and an adjustable guide rod located in said gages and extending parallel with the base rod, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
4. In a cutter for flexible material, a base rod, a knife supported thereon, a gage. located on said base rod on each side of said knife, means for adjusting the positions of the knife and gages relative to each other to correspond to the width of the material and to the width of cut, and a guide rod supported in said gages parallel with said base rod. substantially as specified.
