To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Josnrn H. Dalian, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Snap-Lever Oilers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in gravity feed lubricators and more particularly to that class of lubricators known as snap lever oilers.
To this end the invention consists in the peculiar construction, arrangement and combination of parts all as more fully hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1, is a vertical central section through an oiler embodying my invention, showing the valve closed; Fig. 2, is a vertical central section of the feed tube and adjacent parts showing the valve operating mechanism in an intermediate position; Fig. 3, a similar view with the valve in its raised or open position.
A indicates the cylindrical glass body and B and C the heads to close the ends thereof to form the oil reservoir. The lower head B is provided with an externally screw-threaded downwardly extending discharge nozzle D which extends into and to which is secured the sight-fitting E, integrally formed at its lower end with a threaded nipple F for at taching to the part to be lubricated.
G indicates an axial feedtube consisting of two parts H, I integrally formed with the heads B, C respectively and having a screwthreaded engagement with each other to firmly clamp the glass body between the heads, cork rings J being interposed to form a tight joint. Within the feed-tube G is the valve stem K having a tapered end adapted to engage the valve-seat L in the lower end of the feed-tube through which the feed-tube communicates with the nozzle D an opening Min the side of the tube admitting oil thereto.
N indicates a vent tube communicating with the sight-fitting and O a packing on the valve-stem held in place by a threaded washer P to maintain the pressure in the body where the lubricator is used upon steam or gasolene engines.
The upper head C is integrally formed with an externally screw-threaded portion Q form- 111g an upward extension of the feed tube and R indicates a spring dog held in place thereon by the lock nut S.
T indicates an internally screw-threaded adjusting nut formed with a central aperture for the valve stem and with vertical grooves 011 its periphery adapted to be engaged by the spring dog.
U is a chambered plug, fitting into the upper end of the feed tube and engaging the nut T its lower end being formed with a guide bearing for the valve stem.
The valve stem K is made in two parts, the
upper part being split at-its lower end to rcceive the flattened upper end of the lower part each terminating in suitable shoulders and forming in crosssection a practically solid stem. The parts being connected by providing the flattened upper end with a slot V and the split lower end with a transverse pin 7 which engages the slot V. The parts of the stem are thus connected so that one is free to move a slight distance independently of the other part.
Sleeved on the upper part of the stem K is a coil spring X engaging at one end a washer X resting on the projecting ends of the pin TV and at its opposite end engaging the inner end of the chambered adjusting nut T. On the upper portionof the lower part of the stem is sleeved a coil spring Y of greater strength than the spring X and abutting with its opposite ends against the lower end of the plug U and a shoulder Y on the stem formed by slipping a washer thereon and striking up projections to hold the same in place.
The upper end of the stem K projects through the top of the nut and to this end is pivoted the bifurcated hand-lever 1, the upper face of the nut forming the fulcrum for the said lever.
hen the lever Z is in the position shown in Fig. 1, the spring Y exerts a force to hold the valve stem K to its seat and the spring K exerts a downward pressure on the shoulder formed by the washer X to hold the lever Z down upon the nut T. l Vhcn the lever is raised in the operation of opening the valve, the first movement thereof raises against the action of the spring X the upper part of the valve stem only, the pin V moving up in the slot V, as shown in Fig. 2 and as said spring is a light one, the movement is comparatively easy, but the pin having reached the upper end of its slot the further movement of the leverraises the lower part of the stem against the action of the heavier spring Y and lifts the valve from its seat, as shown in Fig. 3.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim is 1. In a snap-lever oiler, the combination with a reservoir, of a feed-tube, an adjustable nut threadedon the upper edge of said feedtube, a chambered plug loose in the upper end of said feed-tube, a valve-stem within said feed-tube consisting of two parts, one part being connected to the other and having a limited longitudinal movement independentthereof, independently operating springs, one to actuate each part of the valve-stem, a valve on one end of said valve-stem, a hand lever pivoted to the opposite end of the valve-stem, and a packing surrounding said stem.
2. In a snap-lever oiler, the combination with a reservoir, of an axial feed-tube extending out through the top and bottom thereof, an adjustable nut threaded on and a chambered plug in the upper end of said feedtube engaging said nut and means for holding said nut in any of its adjusted positions, a valve-stem Within said feed-tube consisting of two parts, one part being slotted longitudinally near its end and the other art provided with a fixed pin to engage sai slot and connect said parts, springs sleeved on the parts of said stem one within said plug and engaging said nut and the other engaging said plug and operating independently to actuate said parts, a valve on the lower end of said stem, and a handlever on the upper end thereof.

In a snap-lever oiler, the combination with a reservoir, of an axial feed-tube, projecting out through the reservoir and terminating in externally screw-threaded nipples at its opposite ends and having a valve-seat in its lower end, a chambered plug fitting in the upper end of said feed tube, an internally threaded adjusting nut engaging said plug and one of said nipples, a spring dog sleeved on said nipple co-operating with said not to hold it in any of its adjusted positions and a lock-nut on the nipple for holding said dog in place, a valve-stem within said feed-tube consisting of two parts, the upper part being provided at its lower end with a recess to receive the flattened upper end of the lower part of said stem and the lower part provided With a slot, a pin on said upper part to engage said slot and connect the parts, springs of different tension sleeved on the parts of said stemand operating independ ently to actuate said parts, a valve on the lower end of the stem, and a hand-lever on the upper end thereof.
4. In a snap-lever oiler, the combinationv of a reservoir, an axial feed-tube in said reservoir projecting through the top thereof, a chambered plug fitting within and an adjusting nut closing the upper end of said feedtube and having a knurled surface, a spring dog sleeved on the feed-tube co-operating with said knurled surface, a valve seat in the lower end of said feed-tube, a valve stem consisting of an upper and a lower part, the
lower part being provided with a flattened,
portion having a slot near its upper end, the ower end of said upper part of the valvestem having a recess to receive the upper end of the lower part of the stem, a transverse pin in said recessed portion to engage the said slot, a hand-lever pivoted to the upper end of the upper part of the stem and adapted to engage the top of said nut, a spring sleeved on the upper part of the stem and engaging said pin and the inner end of the adjusting nut to hold the hand-lever in engagement with the top of said nut, a valve on the lower end of the lower part of said stem, an abutment on said lower part, a shoulder formed by the lower end of said plug, and a spring engaging said shoulder and abutment to hold the valve to its seat.
