LUBRICATOR;
SPECIFICATION ruiming part of nttets Patent No. 684,418, dated october i5, 1961.
` ippiimuon nea umh 7,1901. semina. 50,164. (Neumann To all wwm it Hwy @Ofi/06TH: end is formed with a guide-bearing Z for the Be it known that I, GEORGE B. ESSEX, acitivalve-stem, and its upper end has a knurled zen of the United States of America, residing head D2, by means of which it may be readily at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State screwed up or down in the feed-tube for the 5 of Michigan, have invented certain new and purpose of adjustment, a jam-uutE upon the 55 usefulImprovementsinLubricators, of which plug locking it in its adjusted position.
the following is a specification, reference be- F is a cupped washer vertically guided in ing had therein to the accompanying drawa recess formed in the head of the plug D ings. and provided with a central aperture for guid To This invention-relates more particularly to ing the upper end of the valve-stem. The 66 that kind of gravity-feed lubricators which valve-stem has pivotally secured to its upper are employed for automatically oiling jourend abifurcated hand-lever Gand has sleeved nals and other similar bearings; and my imupon it two coil-springs ITI I. The coil-spring provement involves a novel construction of H is inclosed in the chamber of the screwt5 valve for controlling the discharge from the plug D and is interposed between the bottom 65 reservoir, all as more fully hereinafter deof the plug D and the washer F, and the coilscribed, and shown in the accompanying spring I is inclosed in the feed-tube and is drawings, in whichinterposed between the lower end of the screw- Figure l is an elevation of my improved plug D and a fixed abutment) ou the valvezo lubricator. Fig. 2 is a vertical central secstem D. 70 tion thereof. Fig. 3 is a plan view thereof. The parts being constructed and arranged A is a reservoir, which may be formed,v as as shown and described, they are intended to usually, with a cylindrical glass case a, operate as follows: The coil-springs H I are clamped between upper and lower heads b c, both under tension, but act in opposite di- 25 the former being provided with the usual illrections upon the valve-stem, and the spring 75 ing-opening. Thelowerhead has formedinits I being somewhat stronger it will inv the pocenter the downwardly-projecting dischargesition of the lever G shown in Fig. 2 hold nozzle d, which projects into a sight-fitting B, the Valve-stern down upon the valve seat secured to the lower head, and terminates in yieldingly; but if the lever G is thrown up 3o a screw-nipple e for screwing the lubricator into the dotted position shown the .spring H 8o into the cap of a journal-box or other bearing. will be compressed -to such an extent that it C is a central hollow feed-tube extending will overcome the resistance of the spring I upwardly from the lower head through the to the opening of the valve, and as a result reservoir and forms a housing for the valvethe valve-stem will be bodily raised up from 35 stem D, which latter at its lower end is taits seat and admit the lubricant to feed 85 pered to form a valve f, adapted to seat upon through the nozzle.
a valve-seat g in the lower end of the feed- Should it be desired to regulate the amount tube and through which said feed-tube comoffeed, it may be accomplished by adjusting municates with the nozzle d. The feed-tube, the screw-plugD up or down in the feed-tube.
4o which connects with the reservoir through an It will also be seen that by reason of forming 9o opening K, may be preferably formed with a the valve f with a long taper and guiding the lower portion 7L, cast integral with the lower valve-stem only in bearings near its upper head, and an upper portion t', havingascrewend the valve will readily guide itself to its' thread connection therewith. The upper end seat.
45 of the feed-tube projects through the upper My construction thus accomplishes in a 95 head and is formed with a clamping-head 11, very simple way the desired objects of closadapted to clamp the parts of the reservoir ing the valve yieldingly, sothat it will not jam together. the seat, of guiding the valve-stem to the seat,
l D'isachambered plug screw-threaded into and of providing means for regulating the 'f 5o thc upper end of the feed-tube. Its lower feed. At the same time the lever G, which by roo its position acts as a signal to indicate whether the cup Vis feeding or not, is always held by a spring-pressure in either of its two positions.
What I claim as my invention isl. In a gravity-feed lubricator, the combination of the reservoir, of a central hollow Yfeed tube extending up from the bottom through the top of the reservoir and having an inlet-opening leading from the reservoir into the feed-tube, an outlet from the bottom of the feed-tube formed with a valve-seat at its j unction with the feed-tube, a valve-stem support-v ed in a vertical guide bearing in said feed-tube and extending up through said tube, a Valve at the lower end of said valve-stem and forming a rigid part thereof, two coilsprings sleeved upon the valve-stem one above the other, the lower exerting itsrtension to lower the valve-stem and the upper one exerting its tension to raise the valve-stem, a washer sleeved upon the valve stem and bearing upon the upper spring and a hand-leverpivotally secured to the valve-stem above said Washer and holding said springsjointly under tension. A t Y 2. In a gravity-feed lubricator, the combination with the reservoir A, of the feed-tube Y 'A C, having the inletK and the outlet cZformed Y Y With the valve-seat f the valve-stein formed at its lower end with the taper valve g, "the the valve-stem, the chambered screw-plug D" Y vertically adjustably secured in theupper end of the feed-tube, and forming the guidef bearing Z for the valve-stem, the springs I erting' their tension in opposite directions upon the valve-stem, and the cupped washer 7 i and the' Egg@ F interposed between the spring H lever G.
In testimony whereof I ax my Signat-ureV in presence of two witnesses. Y
