or NEW YORK, N. Y.
Leners Pamt1'v0.85,222, dated-Demna- 22, 186s.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, WILLIAM Eisenerz, of New l York, in the eountyof New York, and'State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wind-Instruments made of wood,- 85e.; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and
exact description thereofgfwhich will enable those' skilled-in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to th accompanying drawings, forming partof this specilication,.in which;
Figure 1 -is a sideview of a flute to which my im.
provemeut has been'attached.
AFigure 2- is a view of the're'verse side ofthe same. Similar4 letters of reference indicate like parts.'
My invention has for its object to improve the construction of wind musical instruments made of wood, hard rubber, and other suitable materialsother than metal, so as, in the fust place, to guard against the `body of the instrument splitting, and, in the second place, to enable the said body of the instrument to be replaced at a trilling expense, should it become in- 'ured rove unsatisfactor in tone, or vundesirable from J 7 P .Y
any other cause.
It consists in the combination of an open metallic band, to which the keys are permanently attached with the body of the instrument, as hereinafter more fully described. v
A is the body of the instrument, which may be made of wood, hard rubber, ivory, or other suitable material other than metal, and about the construction of which .there is nothing new.-
B isan open band, fitted around that part of the body, A, of the instrument in which the stops are formed.
l The band B is made of such a size as to almost but not quite meet at a sufficient number of points to seeurely attach it to' the said body A its edges between said points being cut away slightly, as shown in iig. 2,
so as to allow the band to give, to accommodate itself to the swelling of said body A.
Upon the points ofthe edges of the openband B that-.come nearest together, are formed eais, through Iwhich small screws are passed, which enable the said band B to be 'clamped to the said body A with any desired closeness.
The ears to which the keys C arel pivoted are soldered or otherwise permanently attached to the open band B, so as to be removed from the body A' of the instrument-with -the removal of the said band B.
The metal around both the in'ge'r and key-stops is cut away, as shown in iig.1,so that the stopping, both by the fingers and by the keys, may always be done upon the body A, and never upon the metal band -B. This guards against any effect being produced upon the currents of air from the unequal expansion ofthe body A `and band B.
Having vthus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire vto secure by Letters Patent- 1. rJlhe combination .of an open band, B, having the keyspermanently attached-to it, with the body A of the instrument, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth;
2. Permanently attaching the keys C to. the open removable band B, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
3. Cutting the band B away around the finger and key-stops, either or both, suhstantiallyas heroin shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
The above specification of my invention signed by me, this 27th day of April, 1868.
iVILLLMI FISCHER.
