JOHN HILBERT, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
BRACKET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
atented April 30, 1907.
Application filed February 13, 1906. Serial No. 300,902.
To @ZZ when 71T', ntfty concern:
Be 1t known that I, JOHN HiLnnn'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful improvements in Brackets, of
ing is a specification.
which the followl This invention relates to fastening mem- 1 bers designed especially for use in securing panels in place in the construction of doors, wainscoting and jects to provide a simple, inexpensive device of this character which in practice will retain the panel securely in place, one which may be readily driven into the material, and one whereby the cost of production of the doors or wainscoting is measurably decreased and liability of the panels becoming warped :minimi Zed.
With these and other objects in view, the invention comprises the novel features of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure l is a detail cross section through a door showing the improved fastening member applied in use. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the fastening member utilized in the production of a piece of wainscoting. Fig. 3 is a view of the sheet metal blank from which the fastening member is produced. Fig. if is a perspective view of the fastening member complete. Fig. 5 is a detail, sectional view centrally and longitudinally through the fastening member. Fig. 6 is a face view of a portion of the fastening member.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the fastening member' embodying the invention and shown in Fig. l as applied for connecting the parts of a door comprising as usual vertical body portionsor stiles 2, a panel 3 and moldings 4 applied to opposite faces of and marginally around the panel, the fastener being shown in Fig. 2 as employed in the construction of a piece of wainscoting, the parts of which correspond with the parts of the door except that in the construction shown in Fig. 2 the molding 4 is applied to but one face of the panel 3.
The fastener 1 forming the subject matter of the invention is of substantially Z-shape in cross section and preferably formed from a single piece or blank of sheet metal stamped and bent into shape and comprises a body the like, and has for its obl l l l l l l l l l l portion 5 and oppositely extending engaging portions 6, 7, of which the former is of substantially'triangular form as shown and has its outer end sharpened as at 8, the engaging portions being formed integral with and respectively at opposite ends of the body portion from which they project at right angles and in relatively reverse directions, while formed in the body 5 at the juncture of the engaging portion G therewith is an opening 9 for a purpose which which will presently appear. j
in practice, the sharpened engaging portion (j of the fastening member is driven into the body portions or stiles 2 of the door, whereupon the engaging portion 7 of the fastener will bear upon one face of and support the panel 3 in place, after which the moldings are applied as seen in Figs. 1 and 2, it being obvious that by the employment of the improved fastening member the panel will be held securely in place and that the necessity for grooving the stiles 2 to receive the ends of the panel is rendered unnecessary, as is also the necessity for using nails or the like in uniting the parts. By the formation of the opening 9 in the body 5 the adjacent end of the sharpened engaging portion 6 is freely exposed for the action of a hammer or simil ar tool for driving the fastener into the material of the stiles, it being apparent that if desired the opening 9 may receive a nail or the like for holding the fastener in engagement with the panel 3.
Having thus described my invention, I claim is:
As a new article of manufacture, a fastener comprising a body portion and a pair of engaging portions formed at the terminals of said body and extended at right angles thereto in relatively reverse directions, one of said engaging portions being of substantially triangular form. and having a sharpened outer end and the body being provided with an opening disposed at thc juncture of the inner end of the sharpened engaging portions with the body.
In testimony whereof, l allix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
J Ol-IN HILBERT.
