JOHN OHESNEY, OF PAULSBORO, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO THE E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS POWDER COMPANY, OF WILMINGTON, DELAWARE, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
PAPER-CUTTER FOR DUPLEX SHELL-MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 30, 1907.
Application fi ed December 11,1906. Serial No. 347.383.
To all whom it 'II'Z/(I/Z/ concern.-
Be it known that I, J OHN Cnnsxnr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paulsboro, county of Gloucester, and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Im provement in Paper-Cutters for Duplex Shell-Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the z'tccompan ving drawings, which f rm a part of this specification.
The invention relates to machines for making paper shells in which a sheet of paper is cut diagonally to form two sheets which are separately delivered to two forming mandrels.
The object of the invention is to provide improved means for so cutting the paper.
in the drmvings: Figure 1 is a plan view of the improved cutting attachment. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same with the table in section. Fig. 3 is vertical section on the line 3 of Fig. 4. Fig. 4 is a partial section through the cutter on the line 1i of Fig. 1.
9 is the table provided with a recess into which the knife 10 partially extends. The knife 10 is boltedv to a block 11 supported on one end of a rocking lever 12. This lever is pivoted between its ends on the cars 13 depending from the table. The other end of the lever is in line of movement of a cam 21 on the shaft 20.
is a presser-bar located above the table and grooved to receive the knife 10. Secured to the presser bar are blocks 31, each block having a cam orifice receiving a shaft 32 and a projection 33 thereon. The shaft 32 is journaled in a frame 34 which is recessed to receive the block 31 and is bolted to the table. Secured to each shaft is a crank 36 is a slide-bar attached to the cranks. The slide-bar is slotted and bolts 37 engaging the table 9 extend through the slots. The rear end of the slide bar carries a roller 38 engaging the face of a cam 22 on the shaft 20.
40 is cross-bar above and extending longitudinally of the frame 3% and secured at a delinite distance above the frame 34 by .means of bolts 41 and adjusting nuts 42.
39 are compression springs confined be tween the cross bar 40 and the blocks 31.
WVhen the slide bar 36 is pushed toward the frame 34 by the cam 22, the crank-shafts 32 are turned to cause the projections 33 to lift the blocks 31 and presser-bar 30 against the tension of the springs 13%). While the presserbar is thus iiftel, the rocking-lever 12 is not engaged by the cam 21, and the knife 10 is held down by means of a spring 1 t confined between the table and the end of the lever 12 carrying the knifc. When the cam 22 rc cedes from the slide bar 36, the springs 39 force down the blocks 3 .1 and presser-bar 30, moving the latter firmly against the paper which has been inserted under the slune. At the same time, the rocking-hwer 12 has been actuated by the cam 21 and rocked on its pivot, forcing the knife into the recess in the prcsser-bar and severing the paper. The blocks 31, in their downward movement, rock the shafts 32 and return the slide-bar. The knife 10 is retracted by the spring l i as soon as the cam 21 passes beyond the end of the lever.
llaving now full described my invention. what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. An attachment for cutting a sheet of paper comprising a recessed table, a knife projectin g within the recess an d extending under the table, a recessed presser-bar above the table, blocks supporting the presscrb.1r, a frame supporting the blocks and in which the latter are vertically inoimtble, means to raise and depress the blocks, and means to raise the knife and move its cutting edge into the reccss in the presser-bar and to depress the cut ting edge of the knife below the level of the table.
2. An attachment for cutting a sheet of papcr comprising a recessed table, a knife projecting within the recess and extending under the table, a recessed presser-bar above the table, blocks supporting the pfresser-bar, a frame supporting the blocks and in which the latter are vertically movable, cam orifices in said blocks, shafts having projcctions engaging said orifices, mcans to turn said shafts, and means to raise the knife and move its cutting edge into the recess in the prcsser bar and to depress the cutting-edge of the knife below the level of the table.
3. An attachment for cutting a sheet of paper comprising a recessed table, a knife projecting within the recess and extending under the table, a recessed presser-bar above the table, blocks supporting the presser-bar, 1o 5 a frame supporting the blocks and in which the latter are vertically movable, springs engaging said blocks and tending to depress them, cam orifices in said blocks, shafts having projections engaging said orifices, means to turn the shafts, thereby raising the blocks against their springs, and means to raise the knife and move its cutting edge into the recess in the presser-bar and to depress the cutting edge of the knife below the level of the table.
4. An attachment for cutting a sheet of paper comprising a recessed table, a knife projecting Within the recess and extending under the table, a recessed presser-bar above the table, cams, mechanism actuated by one of said cams adapted to move the presser bar vertically, and mechanism actuated by the other of said cams adapted to move the knife vertically.
5. An attachment for cutting a sheet of paper comprising a recessed table, a knife projecting Within the recess and extending under the table, a recessed presser-bar above the table, cams, mechanism actuated by one of said cams adapted to move the presser-bar vertically in one direction, a spring acting to move the presser-bar in the opposite direction, mechanism actuated by the other cam adapted to move the knife vertically in one direction, and a spring acting to move the knife in the opposite direction.
6. An attachment for cutting a sheet of paper comprising a recessed table, a knife projecting Within the recess and extending under the table, a recessed presser-bar above the table, a spring tending to depress the presser-bar against the table, a cam, mechanism actuated thereby to raise the knife and move its cutting edge into the recess in the presser bar when the latter is depressed, a second cam, mechanism actuated thereby to raise the presser bar, and a spring tending to depress the knife out of action.
7. A11 attachment for cutting a sheet of paper comprising a frame, blocks slidable therein, a presser bar movable With the blocks, a spring tending to move the presserbar in one direction, shafts, projections thereon engaging cam orifices in the blocks, means to turn the shafts and move the blocks against the action of said springs, and a knife cooperating With the presser-b ar.
8. An attachment for cutting a sheet of paper comprising a frame, blocks slidable therein, a presser-bar movable With the 3 a frame supporting the blocks and in Which the latter are vertically movable, springs tending to force the presser-bar toward the table, shafts, projections thereon engaging cam orifices in said blocks, a slide-bar, cranks thereon engaging said shafts, a cam adapted to actuate said slide-bar, a lever on one end of Which the knife is secured, a spring tending to depress the knife, and a second cam adapted to rock said lever and raise said knife to project its cutting edge into the presser-bar recess.
In testimony of Which invention, I have hereunto set my hand, at Paulsboro, N. J on this 26th'day of November, 1906.
JOHN OHESNEY.
