BOOK STAPLING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 503,271, dated August 15, 1893.
Application filed November 18, 1892. Serial No. 452,481. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIUS THEODOR OTTO ORTLOFF, a subject of the Grand Duke of Baden, and a resident of Heidelberg, in the Grand Duchy of Baden, Empire of Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in l3ook-Stapling Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
My invention relates to a machine for stapling books in which wire of two different thicknesses may be employed for forming the staples, and in which wire-staples of two different lengths may be formed. The means for effecting this result will be fully described hereinafter, and the features of novelty pointed out in the claims.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of the main part of my improved stapling machine, taken on line 1l' of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional elevation of the same on line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 a detail View of the anvil on which. the staples are formed, as seen from below. Fig. 4c is a view, corresponding to Fig. 1, of a modification.

In carrying out my invention, I employ a machine of a construction the general features whereof do not differ from the usual construction of book stapling machines; the changes which distinguish my improved machine relate chiefly to the anvil on which the staples are formed and to the guide-frame in which the driver moves up and down.
For the sake of facilitating the intelligence of my improved machine, I will specifically describe the main part of the same, though the mechanism is not novel in its substance.
A is the plunger working in the vertical guide-frame l3 and having the driver 0 secured at its lower end. This plunger is to be operated by a suitable lever mechanism which is not shown in the drawings,being of current employment in book-stapling and similar machines. To the front of the plunger A two brackets I) having a cam-shaped slot 1) are secured at right angles. A pin E secured to the end of a lever F works in this slot, said lever being pivoted at F.
To the lever F is rigidly connected the fork G the ends whereof are adapted to cut the wire and to form the staples therefrom. The fork G is provided with arms extending up Ward, so as to form another fork H.
In the path of travel of the driver O is located an anvil I secured to a spring J which is fixed to the guide-frame B. Two pins K are also secured to the spring J so as to col lide with the fork II when the same is about horizontal. The anvil is provided with two superposed horizontal grooves I and I and the guideframe B with two channels 1-3 and B in the continuation of the said grooves, one of these channels being on the left of the anvil I, and the other on the right of the same. The anvil is also provided with two vertical recesses L the upper ends of which are in line with the lower channel B and groove I In the continuation of the channel l3 and groove I the guide-frame B is somewhat recessed and provided with a vertical groove B In the machine illustrated by Figs. 1 and 2, the driver (3 and anvil I are not placed centrally in the guide-frame B, but laterally of the vertical center-line.
Suitable mechanisms of usual construction are provided for feeding either thin wire through the channel B and groove I or coarser wire through the channel 13 and groove I during the upward movement of plunger A.
The device for clinching the wire staple after it has been driven through the sheets to be united need not diifer from the mechanisms employed for this purpose in ordinary book stapling machines.
The operation of my improved machine is as follows: By the upward movement of the plunger A, either thin Wire is fed into the machine through the channel B and the F and the cutters provided at the ends of the fork G will cut a piece of wire of a certain length. Now it will be obvious that this length may be different according as the wire is fed through the upper or lower of the superposed grooves I and 1 The length of the wire cut, when the sameis passed through the groove 1, will be smaller than when passed through the lower groove I as will be clearly seen by reference to Fig. 1, where the length of the pieces is indicated bye-b and ab' respectively. I prefer to out the wire only at that end of the guide-way where it enters the machine. The groove B is necessary in order to permit the wire staples formed from the "coarser wire passed through the Y lower groove I to be longer than those formed from the thinner Wire passing through the upper groove 1. The recesses L afiord an enlarged space for bending the coarser wire. The downward movement of the plunger A continuing, the ends of the piece of wire are bent down on each side of the anvil I by the fork Gr. -When this is effected, the fork I-l collides with the pins K and by this means presses the spring J and the anvil I backward and out of the path of travel of the driver 0. At this moment the pin E has traveled up to the vertical portion of the slotD, so that the further movement of the plunger A will not influence the lever F. The driver 0 will then press the staple downward through the paper in the usual manner.
In the modification illustrated by Fig. 4, the plunger A and driverCare placed in the center of the guide-frame B, so that the staples produced will be of equal length this modification only permits to employ wire oftwo different thicknesses, and therefore the first de- B, and another horizontal channel B at a level below the same, of the anvil I, having a groove 1, in line with B, another groove 1 in line with Biand recesses L, means for cutting the wire, led into the grooves l orI and for bending it into staples, and means for driving the staples through the paper, substantially as described, for the purpose set forth.
2. In a book-stapling machine, the combination, with the guide-frame B, having a horizontal channel B" and a vertical channel 13 at a level below the same, and another horizontal channel B in line with the upper end of' channel B of the plunger A and driver 0 located laterally of the vertical center-line of the guide-frame B, the anvil I having groove I, in line with B, another groove I in line with B and recesses L, means for cutting the wire, led into the grooves I or 1 and for bending it into staples, and means for driving the staples through the paper, substantially as described, for the purpose set forth.
