Description
se initrd www @niet i HIRAM CU'LV'Ea--or DANsv1LLE,NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. l85,215, alu-ted December 22, 1.868.
IMPRO'V'ED UPSETTING-MACHINE.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making pan: of the same.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HIRAM OULYER, of D'ansville, in the county of Livingston, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Upsetting-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part or" this specification, in which- Figure l is an elevation.
Figure 2, a plan.
Figures 2 and 3, detail vie'ws.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures. y
My invention consists in a machine in the form of a vise, the jaws or posts'of which carry pairs of eccentrios, that hold the metal under action, a loose bar ibi-ming the bed upon which the article rests, and a follower attached to a hand-lever holding Athe article tance apart'as to allow the article to be acted upon,
to be placed between them; The contiguous sides of each paix'l of rollers that hold upon the article inserted, are preferably ratchetedor cut with teeth, as shown.-
The bed-plates c c are provided with longitudinal grooves j' f, in which rests a loose bar, y, of steel or iron, extending across from side to side, and sustaining the article that is being upset, and preventing it from bending out of shape.
A follower, h, is also made to rest on top the article,
for the saine purpose, being attached to a hand-lever,
lo, pivoted to the frame, and in (':onvenient position for being held in the hand.
The operation will be readily understood. rlhe article to be upset is placed upon bar g, and between the pairs of rollers d d l d. top the article, and the jaws or posts of the device are then screwed together to set up the metal.
.lhespecial'novelty in the case, consists in the cornbination of the loose bar g and follower hl with the bedplates c `aand eccentrics 'll d.
` The bar and follower hold the iron fast between them, to prevent it from spreading out, while the eccentrics apply the necessary pressure, under the action of the screw. vIt will be noticed that the bar, resting loosely in 'grooves ff, allows the closing up of the jaws without offering any obstruction, and under pressure it cannot be misplaced.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is l l.. The combination of the loose bar g, lever-presser lah, eccentrics d d el d, and bedfplates c, with'the jaws The follower h is brought down on
