UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
EDWARD B. CRAFT, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOIR TO IVESTERN ELEC- TRIO COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
LOCKING DEVICE FOR CONTAINING-CASES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 30, 1907.
Application filed February 24,1906. Serial No. 302,664.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD B. CRAFT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Locking Devices for C011- taming-Cases, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description.
My invention relates to a locking device for a containing case or substation set, and has for its object to provide improved and simple means for locking the door of a box or other structure.
In carrying out my invention I employ a screw bolt which passes through an opening in the door of the containing case and is secured Within the case, preferably by being screwed into an angular bracket carried by one of the inner walls of the case, the opening bein countersunk to form a seat for the head of t e screw. A plate is secured to the door of the case over the opening therein, said plate having an opening therein through which the end of a screw-driver may be inserted to operate the screw and unlock the door. When said screw is thus operated, its head engages the said plate to prevent the removal of the screw from the door, said screw head preferably carrying an annular shoulder, which, when the head projects through the opening in the plate, after being unscrewed to unlock the door, engages said plate. With this arrangement the screw is revented from backing out and becoming 0st when the door is open.
I will describe my invention more in detail by reference to the accompanying drawing, which illustrates the preferred embodiment thereof, reserving for the appended claims a statement of the parts, improvements and combinations which I consider novel with me.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a subscribers set equipped with my improved locking device; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a detail view of the angular bracket carried within the case; and Fig. 4 is a detail view of the screw.
The same letters of reference are used to designate the same parts wherever shown.
The door a of the containing case a shown, is provided with an opening a therein through which the locking screw bolt 6 'd. Such an passes, said opening being countersunk to form a'seat a for the head I) of the bolt. An angular bracket (1 is secured to an inner wall of the case and is provided with an internally threaded hole therein adapted to receive the threaded end of the bolt 1), to lock the door.
A plate d is secured to the door over the opening therein and is provided with a hole (1 therein through which the head of the screw passes when operated to unlock the door, said screw head when the door is unlocked engaging said plate to prevent removal of the bolt from the door. The head is preferably provided with an annular shoulder b" which when the bolt is unscrewed from the bracket 0 abuts against said plate arrangement provides a better means for holding the door of a containing case or subscribers 'set securely shut than the ordinary lock, and by giving it an external resemblance to a look, as shown in Fig. 1, 7 5 it will serve very effectively as a barrier to unauthorized persons or tamperers.
I claim I The combination with a containing case, of a door having an opening therethrough 8o countersunk from its outside, a screw having an enlarged portion forming a head, said head being provided with an annular shoulder at its inner end, the countersunk portion of said opening being of a size to receive said shoulder, a plate secured to said door over the opening therein, said plate having a hole therein of a size to permit the passage of the head of said screw but not to permit the passage of said shoulder, whereby the removal 0 of said screw from the door is prevented, and a bracket secured to the inner wall of the case, said bracket having a threaded opening adapted to receive said screw to lock the door, said countersunk opening being of a 5 depth corresponding to the head of said screw whereby said screw head becomes l lush with the outer surface of said plate when the door is locked.
In witness whereof, I, hereunto subscribe my name this 12th day of F cbruary A. D.,
EDIVA R'D B. CRAFT.
