To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. MAR UA,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and l State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bodies for Go-Uarts, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates more particularly to improvements in flexible or leather bodies for what is known to the trade as folding and collapsible go-carts.
The object of my invention is to overcome the construction of bodies used at present which are more or less bulky, heavy and hard to operate, and to provide a safe, comfortable, light, convenient, easily operated and attractive flexible collapsible body which is adapted to be attached to the various styles of go-cart gearing now in use and to be collapsed into compact form therewith, which is cheaply made and is desirable on account of its adaptability to being collapsed into a small space, so that a person can easily carry it on boats, street cars, etc.
My invention consists in a body for gocarts comprising a top supporting frame adapted to support a flexible collapsible receptacle of leather or other suitable material suspended therefrom in open position to support and convey a child, means forpivotally and slidably attaching said frame to the gearing of a go-cart whereby said body may be supported in open position or collapsed into compact form with said gearing, as desired.
My invention also consists in means for forming a substantially flat and partially flexible bottom for said receptacle, or an irregular bottom with a flexible cover or apron for the child, and it further consists in the parts and arrangement of parts as set forth and claimed.
In the drawings which serve to illustrate my invention: Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved body applied to one form of go-cart gearing now in use, the same being shown in open position. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a side view showing the body and gearing collapsed into compact form. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of my improved body in open position ready to be applied to the gearing of a go-cart. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail view of the pivotally mounted sliding bearing by which the frame is slidably and pivotally connected to the gearing. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal section of a modified form of body applied to a different style of gearing than that illustrated in the preceding figures, the same being shown in open position. Fig. 7 is a side view of the same showing the handle of the gearing moved forward in the act of closing the go-cart into compact form to be carried or stored. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the modified form of body shown in Figs. 6 and 7. Fig. 9 is an enlarged detail view of the pivotally mounted sliding bearing by which the frame is slidably and pivotally connected to the handle bar of the gearing in the modified construction. My improved body is adapted to be applied to various forms and styles of gearing for go-carts now in use and while the shape of the body may be varied as desired to correspond or harmonize with the gearing to which it may be applied, I prefer to construct and arrange the body substantially as shown in the drawings, in which 1 represents a continuous top supporting frame of metal or other suitable material having attached thereto a flexible collapsible receptacle 2 by suitable fastcnings. such as 3, and adapted to depend or hang thereon. The top supporting frame 1 is pivotally secured at its ends 4 and 5 to supports 6 and 7 respectively, fixed upon the handle bars S and 9 respectively, of the gearing 10, which comprises all parts of the gocart except the body. The top su ')porting frame 1 is slidably and pivotally connected to arms 11 and 12 respectively by sliding bearings 13 and 14, respectively, pivoted to said arms 11. and 12, respectively and slid ably mounted upon the parallel bars 15 and 16 respectively of the top supporting frame 1. Supporting stops 1? and 18 respectively are fixed upon the parallel bars 15 and 16. respcctively to limit the sliding movement of the bearings 1.3 and ll respectively and to assist in supporting the body in open position.
ithin the flexible collapsible receptacle 2 I provide a convertible flexible attachment 19 fixed to the front end thereof and ad aptcd to be detachably connected to the rear end at the bottom by loops or rings 20 adapted to take over catches 21 to form a substantially flat bottom for the receptacle and to the top of the rear end of the receptacle by engagement of said loops or rings 20 with catches 22 to form a covering or apron for the child to protect it from rain or cold as shown by dotted lines in F ig. 2.
It will be apparent that my invention is capable of considerable modification without material departure from the scope or spirit thereof whereby it may be attached to various styles and designs of go-cart gearing, as for instance, in Figs. 6 to 10 inclusive I have shown a modified construction of body .in which the top supporting frame and flexible collapsible receptacle are formed lower at the sides toward the front end, as at 25, giving it the appearance of a baby carriage with projecting dash 26. It will also be apparent that the particular manner of attaching the collapsible body to the gearing may be modifled to adapt it to the particular form of gearing used, as for instance, the arrangement of parts shown in Figs. 1 to 5 respectively may be reversed, as shown in Figs. 6 to 10 respectively, in which the fixed pivotal connection between the collapsible body and the. gearing is between the ends of the body while the sliding bearings 13 and 14 for the respective parallel bars 15 and 16 are pivotally secured to the handle bars 8 and 9 and the supporting stops 17 and 18 are secured at or near the ends of said parallel bars.
The operation of my improved collapsible body is extremely simple, easy and convenient. To close the body into compact form suitable for carrying or storage simply take hold of the handle 23 with one hand and of cross bar 24 with the other hand and draw the latter upwardly to the position indi cated by Fig, 3. To open the body ready for use simply reverse the operation, which will bring the go-cart into the position indicated by Figs. 1 and 2.
'From the above description it will be seen that the collapsible body constructed according to my invention is of an extremely simple, compact and inexpensive nature and is especially well adapted for use in connection with various forms, designs and styles of gearing for .go-carts. For these reasons I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise form and arrangement of the several parts hereinset forth, nor do I wish to be understood as making any claim for the gearing, but
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1.. A body for go-carts, comprising a top supporting frame a flexible collapsible recep tacle supported thereby and depending therefrom, means for pivotally connecting the ends of said top supporting frame to the handle bars of the gearing of a go-cart and supporting said ends by said handle bars,
andsliding bearings adapted to slide along said top supporting frame above the flexible collapsible receptacle and connecting said top supporting frame between its ends to said gearing, substantially as set forth.
2. A body for go-carts, comprising a top supporting frame, a flexible collapsible receptacle depending therefrom and supported thereby, a sliding bearing mounted and adapted to move upon said top supporting frame to assist in opening and closing said flexible collapsible receptacle, a pivotal connection between said sliding bearing and the gearing of a go-cart, and plvotal connection betweensaid top supporting frame and the handle of said gearing.
3. A body for go-carts, comprising a top supporting frame, a flexible collapsible receptacle depending therefrom and supported thereby, a sliding bearing mounted and adapted to move upon said top supporting frame when opening or closingsaid collapsible receptacle, a pivotal connection between said sliding bearing and the gearing of a gocart, a pivotal'connection between said top supporting frame and said gearing, and a stop upon said top supporting frame to engage said sliding bearing and thereby assist in supporting said collapsible receptacle in open position.
4. A body for go-carts, comprising a top frame, a flexible collapsible receptacle depending therefrom and supported thereby and a convertible flexible attachment secured at one of its ends to the front end of the receptacle and adjustably secured at its other end to the rear end thereof to form a substantially flat bottom for the body, or a cover for the child, as desired, substantially as set forth.
5. A body for go-carts, comprising a continuous top supporting frame 1, supporting stops 17 and 18 thereon, a flexible collapsible receptacle 2 depending from and supported by said top supporting frame, fastenings 3 adapted to connect said flexible collapsible receptacle to said. frame, sliding bearings 13 and 14 mounted upon the parallel bars 15 and 16 respectively of the top supporting frame 1- and adapted to bear againstsaid supporting stops 17 and 18 respectively, and supports 6 and 7 fixed upon thegearing of a go-cart and 'pivotally connected to parallel bars 15 and 16, respectively, all combined and arranged substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
