BALING-PRESS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 30, 1907.
Application filed November 1,1906. Serial No. 341,516.
To fill 111/10171/ 7,7/2 'lll/(Ly colocar/t.-
Be it known that 1, WiLnnLM F. TRUEL- SEN, a citizen of the United States, residing, at Ai\filw"aukee, county of Milwaukee, and State of Visconsin, have invented new and useful Lnproveinents in Baling-Fresses, which the following` is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in presses with especial reference to that class of presses known as balinl presses.
The object of my invention is to provide a form of press in which the power may be applied to the platen from a single screw through lifting arms or toggle le vers which are pivotally connected and fulcrumed upon each other, but unconnected with the platen,
and therefore free to travel along its underl lateral pressure of each surface, whereby the lever upon its fulcruin or pivot pin is transniitted to the other lever and assists in lifting it and whereby the platen is left free to adjust itself to the material within reasonable limits, and cramliing and binding upon the lever connections is wholly avoided all parts of the structure being' balanced.
1n the followinpl description reference is had to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a side view of my invention with a portion of the platen broken away. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the actu ating' connections. Fig. 3 Ais a sectional view of the platen drawn on line XX of Fig'. 1.
Like parts are identiiied by the same reference characters throughout the several views.
The press box 1 is supported by frame bars 2 and provided with a suitable door 3 for the removal of the bale. A head piece el is loosely connected with the upper end partions of the frame posts and a loose platen 5 is guided by the frame bars and an auxiliary guide member 6. The platen 5 is preferably provided with a marginal depending web which carry guide rollers 11.
The platen is actuated from a screw shaft 12 which is centrally supported in suitable journals 13 from a bed 14 and screw threaded right and left at 15 and 16 respectively. Motion is transmitted from the screw shaft to the platen through the traveling members, (comprising nuts 17 and 1S), and crossed levers 19 and 2() which are pivoted to the respective nuts and also to each other at the crossing point 21 ofA l l l l l i and provided with rollers pair, and pivoted 22 bearing on the'under surface of the platen. When the screw is turned in one direction, the nuts 17 and 1S approach each other, and the levers are thereby drawn toward cach other at their lower ends and the upper ends forrespondingly lifted and forced toward each other along the under surface of the platen, the platen being lifted upon the upper ends of the levers, each of which swings upon the pivot pin 21. This pin is supported by each lever' and servos as a fulcruin for both. 1n the construction illustrated there are two levers 19 connected respectively to the opposite sides of the nut 17 and two levers similarly connected to the nut 18; rollers 23 are employed to support the levers from the bed 14 and relieve strain on the nuts. A single pivot pin or bolt 21 serves for the four levers at the crossing point, all the levers being therefore required to move in unison.
.lt will be observed that the levers 19 and 2() are arranged in pairs, the two levers 19 being pivoted to studs projecting from the nuts at diametrically opposite points, preferably substantially in the horizontal plane of the screw axis, so that the pressure is balanced on the screw threads. 'lt will also be observed that the levers 19 and 2() on either side of the screw are offset in opposite directions to receive the pivot pin respective ends of the levers are in a line parallel with the screw, thus making a perfectly balanced structure. The rollers 22 are not mounted directly upon the levers, but at the outer sides thereof upon a roller supporting cross rod, which also connects the otherwise free ends of the pair of levers 19, (or 20), and thus gives steadiness to the structure.
Having thus described my invention what 1 claiin as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
1. 1n a press of the described class, the combination with a platen, an operating screw centrally located in suitable stationary bearings underneath the platen with its respective end portions screw threaded right and left, traveling nuts mounted on the respective end portions of said screw, a pair of levers for each of the nuts, pivotally secured to opposite sides thereof,-the levers of each pair being` crossed with those of the other thereto, said platen being 21, so that the i upon the ends of said levers mounted loosely point, and supported beyond the crossing therefrom.
2. In a press ol" the described class, the combination of two pairs of levers, those of each pair being connected by traveling members at their lower ends, and by cross rods at their upper ends, rollers mounted on the cross rods, a platen loosely an actuating screw mounted in stationary bearings and extending through the traveling' members between the levers, said screw having right hand threaded engagement with one of the traveling members and left hand threaded engagement with the other.
3. In a press ol the described class, the combination of two pairs of levers, those of each pair being connected by traveling members at their lower ends, 'and by cross rods at their upper ends rollers mounted on the cross rods, a platen loose y mounted on trie rollerK an actuating screw mounted in stationary bearings and extending through the traveling members between the levers, said screw having right hand threaded engagement with one of the traveling members and left hand threaded engagement with the other,`the levers of' each pair being crossed with those of the other, diate point.
4. In a press of the described class, the combination of two pairs of levers, those of each pair being connected by traveling members at their lower ends, and by cross rods at their upper ends, rollers mounted on the cross rods, a platen loosely mounted on the rollers, an actuating screw mounted in stationary bearings and extending through the traveling members between the levers, said screw having right hand threaded engagement with oneof the traveling members and lett hand threaded engagement with the other,--the levers of each pair being crossed with those ol" the other, and pivoted thereto at an intermediate point by a common pivot bolt'connecting the four levers.
5. In a press of the described class, the combination of two pairs of levers, tb ose of each pair being connected by traveling members at their lower ends, and by cross rods at their upper ends, rollers mounted on the cross rods, a platen loosely mounted on the rollers, an actuating screw mounted in stationary bearings and extending through the traveling mounted on the rollers,l
and pivoted thereto at an intermei, l l i l l l l l l l l i threaded engagement with the other,-the le- I vers ol" each pair being crossed. with those of the other, and pivoted thereto at an intermediate point, and said levers and platen supporting rollers being symmetrically arranged to balance the pressure upon the platen and the adjusting screw.
6. In a press of the described class, the combination oli two pairs of levers, those of each pair being connected b r traveling members at their lower ends, and by cross rods at their upper ends, rollers mounted on the cross rods, a platen loosely mounted on the rollers, an actuating screw mounted in stationary bearings and extending through the traveling members between the levers, said screw having right hand threaded engagement with one of the traveling members and left hand threaded engagement with the other, the levers ot each pair being crossed with there of the other, and pivoted thereto at an intermediate point, and said levers being oiiiset at the intermediate pivot point and arranged with their outer end portions equidistant from the vertical plane of the screw, and that of the intermediate pivot bolt.
7'. In a press of the described class, the combination of two pairs o1 levers, those of each pair being connected by traveling members at their lower ends, and by cross rods at their upper ends, rollers mounted on the cross rods, a platen loosely mounted on the rollers, an actuating screw mounted in stationary bearings and extending through the traveling members between the levers, said screw having right hand threaded engagement with one ol the traveling members and left hand threaded engagement with the other, the levers of each pair being crossed with those of the other, and pivoted thereto at an intermediate point and said rollers being located on the outer ends ot their corresponding connecting rods and equidistant from the vertical planes ol' the screw, and intermediate pivot bolt pectively.
In testimoni,r whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
