Description

PATENTED APR. 30, 1907.
. W. BENNETT. CARTRIDGE DEPLEGTOR FOR TOP EJEGTION GUNS.
APPLICATION FILED HA3. 4, 1907.
UNITED STA ES PA ENT OFFICE.
WINCHESTER BENNETT, or NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS COMPANY, or NEW HAVEN, CONNECTI- OUT, A CORPORATION.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 30, 1907.
Application filed March 4,1907. Serial No. 360,489,
1'0 on whom it 777/6Ly concern:
Be it known that I, WINCHESTER BENNETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cartridgevention I may apply it to different kinds of Deflectors for Topdnjection Guns; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, 1n
Figure 1 a broken view in side elevation of a gun provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 a view thereof partly in rear elevation and partly in section on the line ab of Fig. 1.
My invention relates to an improvement in cartridge deflectors for top-ejection guns provided with centrally arranged telescopes, the object being to provide simple and reliable means for laterally deflecting the spent Shells and so preventing them from hitting the telescope for which it acts as a fender.
With these ends in view my invention consists in the combination with a gun having a top ejection-opening, of a cartridge deflector secured to the gun and extending upward partlally over the said opening.
My invention further consists in certaiir details of construction as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In carrying out my invention as herein shown, I employ a sheet-metal cartridge deflector 2 Secured by screws 3 to the left hand wall of a gun-frame or receiver 4 which is formed with a top ejection-opening 5 through which the spent cartridge shells 6 are ejected in the usual manner. The upper portion of the cartridge deflector 2 extends from left to right partially over the opening 5 so that the cartridges will be thrown against it and deflected from left to right and So prevented from flying and hitting the telescope 7 which is centrally supported by front and rear mountings 8 so that its rear end extends centrally over the ejection-opening 5. The deflector thus acts asa fender for the telescope and it might be called a telescope fender. If the spent shells are allowed to hit the tele scope they will injure the same and rebound into the opening 5 and clog the gun.
It is obvious that in carrying out my i11- guns and that other applications of it than that shown may require appropriate changes in it. I do not therefore limit myself to the construction shown and described herein.
I claim 1. A gun having a top ejection-opening, in combination with a cartridge deflector applied to the gun and extending partially over the said opening in position to laterally deflect the spent shells as they issue from the said opening.
2. The combination with a gun having a top ejection-opening, of a cartridge deflector applied to the gun and extending partially over the said opening, and a centrally arranged telescope the rear end of which extends over the said opening.
3. The combination with a gun having a top ejection-opening, of a cartridge deflector applied to the left hand side of the gun and extending from left to right partially over the said opening, and a centrally arranged telescope the rear end of which extends over the said opening.
4. In a gun, the combination with a receiver having a top ejection-opening, of a telescope centrally arranged so as to extend over the said ejection-opening at its rear end, and a cartridge deflector attached to the left hand Side of the said receiver and extending over the said opening to laterally deflect the spent shells issuing therefrom and so act as a fender for the telescope.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WIN CHESTER BENNETT.
lVitnesses DANIEL H. VEADEE, THOMAS C. JOHNSON.
