LOUIE T. LA PAUGH, OF UTICA, NEWYORK. OUTLET-BOX- Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed February 7, 1906. Serial No. 299,967.
I illustrate my invention'in panying drawings, in which:
igure 1 is a perspective view of my improved junction box, showing the cover fastened thereto. Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view through the box and cover. Fig. 3 is a sectional View on line 33 of Fig. 2. F i 4 is a detail perspective View of one of the f astening posts. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of an outlet box, the upper ends of the posts being split and adapted to be bent over the upper ends of ajbox cover to hold the same in place. Fig. 6 is a perspective view on line 6-6 of Fig. 5, and Fig. 7 is a perspective view of one of the fastening posts.
Reference now being bad to' the details of the drawings by letter, A designates an outlet or junction box which, in the present in stance, is shown square in outline and provided with the usual plugged openings for the reception of conduits. Said box is pro-. vided with apertures A in the bottom thereof to receive the split ends B of the osts B. Said posts which may be of any desirable shape or form and which, in the drawings, are
No. 851,597; Patented April 23, 1907.
To all whom; it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LOUIE T. LA PAUGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Utica in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Outlet-Boxes; and I, do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, whiohform a part of this specification.
The invention relates the accomto new and useful boxes for electric conduits, and consists in the provision of a novel manner of fastening the cover to the box, involving a savingof labor and material and providing a secure and inexpensive fastem'ng means, doing away with inwardly or outwardly bent ears which are commonly formed upon junction boxes and which are In order to make steel drawn boxes with ears bent at right angles to the wall of the box, a very ductile and high grade steel must and in so doing, the operation of blanking and drawing a box without heating or reheating, hardens the steel to such a de, gree that it is very difficult to bend the parts of the box at right angles to the sides without breakage, for the reason that theoperation of drawing a box out of one piece of steel will necessarily destroy or weaken the fiber of the metal, thereby weakening the cars at the point of bending, and it is the aim of the to produce a box without any inwardly or outwardly extending lugs, to obviate these objections.
More specifically, the present invention comprises means for fastening a cover to an outlet box comprising posts which have split ends adapted to pass throughan aperture in the bottom of thebox and be turned in opposite directions, securely anchoring the posts, While the upper ends of the posts are adapted to pass through apertures in the cover and means for holding the cover over the upper ends of said posts.
My invention consists fiirther in various construction which will be herein after fully described and then specifically de finedin the appended claims.
are fastened to the box ing passed through said apertures and said ends bent at right angles to the len th of the posts and clenching the bottom 0% and are preferably located adjacent to the opposite side walls of the box in order not to interfere with the conduits which may. be
passed through the walls of the box.
has lugs D about the edge thereof desi ned to engage over the edges of the box to 101d the same against a lateral movement, and said cover is provided with slots Eadapted to receive said posts, as shown clearly in the drawings.
In Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, I have shown the posts as provided with apertures N which are adapted to receive the ins which, after the cover has been placed upon the box, are passed throu h said apertures and form keys to securely ho d the coverin place.
In Figs. 6 and 7 I have of the posts as similarly constructed, each of thepost, t
erturein the upper end are turned down over th 1e sp ends B same manner as t e lugs at the lower end are shown as rectangulanshaped in cross section,
by the split ends b'e- D designates the cover of the box which end being split and instead of forming an apthe box I shown the two ends e cover, clenching the upper surface thereof in the I 4 scribed, a sim clenched, thusforming a secure means for holding the cover in place.
From the foregoing it will be noted that by the provision of the means shown and dele and eflicient locking mechanism is alfor ed for securely holding a cover to an outlet box by the utilization of keys passing through the apertured posts orformagainst the bottom of the box or the cover, in
in the opposite ends of the (posts with the spit ends which are clenche respectively,
I the manner shown and described.
That I claim is 1. An outlet box having slots in the bottom thereof, posts passing through said slots and fastened to the bottom of the box, a-
. cover having slots to receive said posts, and
ends of said posts being apertured, and eys thereof, posts having split ends passing through said a ertures and adapted to old-the 'eo-ver upon t e box, as set forth.
3. An outlet box having slots in the bottom assing through said slots and adapted to be c enched against thebottom of the box, a cover havin slots to 'receivesaid posts, and means for i ho ding the posts in said slots of the cover, as
set forth. 7
4. An outlet box having slots in the bottom thereof, posts having split ends passing through said slots and clenched against the bottom of the box, a cover, slots therein adapted to receive said posts, and locking pins passing through apertures in said posts and earing against the outer face of said cover,
as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature 1n the presence of two witnesses.
