ERNEST A. SAMMONS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO I-IAGGARD & MARCUSSON COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
.Batented April 23, 1907.
Application filed March 18s 1905. Serial No. 250,716.
Be it known that I, ERNEST A. Simmons, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improveniente in Corner-Caps for Vire-Mattress Frames, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to woven wire mattresses; and has for its object to provide a covering corner cap for use on the metal frames of mattress structures. In securing the wire mattress to the supportingl end rails the jagged ends of the wires often project from the respective corners, presenting an unfinished appearance and liable to tear the bed clothes and cause injury to the hands.
In the drawing, Figure l is a plan showing one of the corner caps in place. Fig. 2 is a view in erspective of the cap looking at the inner si e thereof; and Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section on line 3, Fig. l, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow.
A represents the woven mattress fabric, B one of the angle end rails, vC the keeper or clamping plate and D the corner cap. The cap D presents an integral structure and is approximately of the triangular form shown. This cap consists of the plate or web part 4, the inturned top flange 5 and the bottoni flange 6, which provides a recess and chamber 7 for the rece tion of the ends of the angle end rail B an the keeper-plate C in covering and closing the corners. edge flange 6 is cut away to provide an open space S so that the cap will fit closely into place over the ends of the angle frannng rails, as best shown in Fig. 3.
The cap is provided with a lug 9 having an aperture 10 for the insertion of a rivet l1 in securing the outer end of the cap to the end rails. The lug 12 formed on the inner end is provided with an aperture 13 to receive and anchor the respective ends of the sti'flening border wire 14 inserted in the edges of the mattress fabric. It will be understood that The bottom j the caps are used on the four corners of the frame, but one being shown in the illustration.
The cap not only covers the jagged ends of the wires that project outward Vfrom between the keeper-plates and end rails, but also incloses the rough sharp corners of the frame and gives an ornamental and finished appearance to the structure.
llaving thus described my invention, what I claim is-2 l. A one-piece corner cap for wire mattress frames, consisting of a plate or web portion disposed vertically in use, a vertical flange extended inward therefrom and provided with means whereby it may be secured to one of the end irons of a mattress frame, a horizontal inward-directed top Vflange provided with means for attachment for one of the border wires of the mattress, and an inward-directed flange continuous with said top flange and extended obliquely downward therefrom and terminating closely adjacent said vertical flange.
2. In a mattress frame, the combination of a one-piece corner cap consisting of a vertical plate or web, a vertical flange extended inward therefrom, an inward-directed horizontal top flange, and an inward-directed flange extended do\\n\\'ard and backward from said top flange toward said vertical flange, an angle end iron consisting of a vertical portion rigidly secured at its end to the j inner face of said vertical vflange and a horil Zontal top portion having its end spaced conj siderably below said top flange, and a keeper i plate overlying the top portion of said iron l and retained within said top and downwardand-backward-extended flanges.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
l l j J. B. DoNALsoN, l L. B. COUPLAN'D.
