To all whom it concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES H. GAIL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati in the county of-Hamilton and State of ()hio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box Bed- "springs, of. which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to bed-springs general and more especially to box bedsprings or covered structures of that type. Its main features of improvement and advantage reside in the nature of the frame construction for the appliance, the means for attaching the fabric cover in place, permitting it to be readily removed and replaced, and the supporting structure for the spring. In the accompanying drawings form ng a part of this specification, and to which reference should be had in connection with the following detailed description, I have illustrated a preferred and desirable em bodiment of the invention and in these drawings like reference characters refer to the same parts throughout the severalviews.
In such drawings: Figure 1 is a fragmentary plan of the improved box bed-spring with certain parts broken'away or omitted to more clearly illustrate the underlying elements;
Figure 2 is a partial vertical section on an enlarged scale through an edge portion of the structure;
Figure 3 is a partial elevation or edge View of the box bed-spring illustrating the manner of attachment of the fabric-cover;

I By reference to the drawings it will be seen that the plurality of upright orjerect spiral-springs 10, having their top-coils connected together by short helical-springs 11, are supplied with a rectangular border wire 12 to which the upper convolutions of the mar inal springs are fastened in any ap rove manner as by sheet-metal clips or he ders 13.
Such spring structure is supported on a ther supplied with'a plurality of crossbars 16, of which only one is shown, he-
neath and secured to the bottom faces of the side-bars of. the main-frame and to the interjacent angle-bar which has one of its ill flanges disposed horizontally and the other flange vertically.
As is fully shown, the side and end bar portions of the main, rectangular frame are each of substantially Z-shape in cross-section, being built up of two pieces of suit ably-shaped sheet-metal. The main or principal piece has a central, vertical web- 17 embossed or pressed to form an inwardlyextended, longitudinal, hollow, strengthening rib 18. The top, outwardly-projecting flange 19 has an inturned edge-portion, flange, or rib 20 spaced away slightly below the under face of the flange, and the lower, inwardly-disposed flange 21 has its marginal portion 22 bent over upon itself to make the flange of double thickness of metaL. The companion or complementary sheet-metal member 23 of the bar has a main, vertical, plate portion lying against and welded to the 'outer face of the web 17 of the other member, thus covering the hollow interior of the rib 18. At its upper portion it is bent outwardly at 24 and then upwardly at 25 providing a flange or rib parallel to and somewhat spaced awa from the outer surfacc of the web 17, an at its lower portion it is bent inwardly providing a flange 26 which is welded to the bottom face of the double- thickness flange 21, 22.
Each transverse or crom bar 16 of the frame is desirably formed of a sheet-metal channeLshaped member 27 having outstanding, oppositely-disposed flanges 28, 28 over which fits a plate 29 bent at 30 around the edges of the flanges and having inturned parts 31, 31 enclosing such flanges. These two elements may be welded together if detill sired and are attached to the other members of the frame by welding, riveting, or other'-.
] wise, as may be preferred.
To support the bed-spring on a bedstead each corner portion of the frame of the for v the frame to rest upon the corresponding bedstead side-rail, the adjustment of the position of the bar being maintained by a bolt 38. extended through a hole in the bracket and the longitudinal slot of the bar.
The spiral-spring structure is desirably provided with a cushion or pad 40 and the upper half of the box-sprlng 1s encased 1n a removable, rectangular fabric-cover 41 having at intervals along its edge hook-shaped fasteners 42, like those ordinarily used on shoes, which take over the inner edge of the part 20 all the way around the bed-spring, thus securely, bu-t detachably and adjustably fastening the cover in place.
lhe lower half of the bed-spring is similarly enclosed in a rectangular cover 43 provided at intervals along its edge with like hook-fasteners 42 which engage over the top edge of the part or rib 25 all the way around the structure. Such lower cover section is, therefore, in analogous manner held securely in place but yet capable of ready removal or detachmentfor laundry or cleaning purposes.
The hooks 42 have a sliding engagement with the flanges or ribs 20 and 25 and hence no difliculty is experienced in applying the cover to the spring'andmaintaining it substantially free from'folds, wrinkles, puckers, etc., since the hooksmay slide along their ribs and readily accommodate themselves to proper conditions for's'nioo'th coyer application.
It will be seen. that theinteriorof the box bed-spring is fully enclosedto preventthe entrance of dust and dirt andjthatthe space between the edges of the twdco-mplementary covers is closed by the frame itself;
It will be observed also that theimain rectangular frame is so constructed as to possess adequate strength and at the same time provide suitable means with which the cover hooks may conveniently engage.
Additionally, it should benot'ed that the adjustable supporting bars for the structure are located between the edges of the upper and lower. covers and consequently in no way interfere with them or their. removal and replacement.
The invention is susceptible of a variety of embodiments differing more or'less in details from. that submitted, and it is not limited and restricted to the precise and exact structure shown, since radical departures may be made therefrom without sacrificing any of the substantial benefits and advantages arising from the employment of the invention. The covers have been referred to as of fabric but this term is used in its large and generic meaning, as the nature of the material of which the covers are composed is in a considerable degree immaterial and of little importance so long it is adapted for..

In an appliance of the character described, the combination of a bed-spring having a main apertured supporting-frame with a pair of outside flanges, a fabric-cover for the top and upper portions of the sides of the bed-spring, a fabric-cover for the bottom and lower portions of the sides of said b ed-spring, means securing said covers to said flanges, adjustable supporting bars projecting outwardly through the apertures.

and spaced hook-means on said cover detachably securing the same slidingly on said rib, substantially as described.
4. In an appliance of the character described, the combination of a bed-spring having a main supporting-frame, a sheetmetal member secured to said frame'having a rib, a fabric-cover for the bottom and. at
least a portion of the sides of the bed-spring,
and spaced hooks on said cover detachably securing the cover slidingly on said rib,
substantially as described,

In an appliance of the character described, the combination of a bed-spring having a supporting-frame composed of a bar substantially Z-shape in cross-section having a rib along the edge of its top flange, a plate fastened to the outer face of the web of such bar and having a rib disposed longitudinally of the bar and spaced away from its web, a fabric-cover for the upper portion of said spring, a second fabric-cover for the lower portion of said spring and hooks secured to said covers and detachably fastening such covers to said ribs, substantially as described.
6. In an appliance of the character described, the combination of a bed-spring having a supporting-frame composed of a bar substantially Z-shape in cross-section, the marginal portionof the upper outwardly-disposed flange of such bar being bent downwardly and inwardly to provide a rib, the web of said bar being embossed supplying a hollow inwardly-disposed longitudinal rib, the marginal portion of the lower inwardly-extended flange of the bar being bent over on itself to provide a double thickness of metal, a plate fastened to the outer face of said web and closing the gap formed by said embossed rib and having along its upper edge a rib spaced outwardly away from said web, said plate also having along its lower edge a flange beneath and secured to said double thickness flange of the Z-bar, a fabric-cover for the upper portion of the bed-spring, a fabric-cover for the lower por tion of the bed-spring, and hooks secured to the edges of said covers and detaohably fastening them to the flange rib of the Z-bar and to the rib of said plate respectively, substantially as described.
7. In a bedspring, a rectangular frame composed of two longitudinal sheet-metal members, the one of substantially Z-shape in cross-section with a lengthwise hollow rib embossed in its web, the other welded to a face of said web and overlying the hollow interior of said rib, substantially as described.
8. In a bed-spring, a rectangular frame of two longitudinal sheet-metal members, the one of substantially Z-shape in cross-section with a lengthwise hollow rib embossed in its web and with the metal composed of one flange bent over on itself to provide a flange of double thickness, the other welded to a face of said web overlying the hollow interior of said rib and having a flange underlying and secured to said double-thickness flange, substantially as described.
