Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aprn 23, 1907.
Application filed November 9,1906- Serial No. 342,652.
T0 all 1071.071?, it 1li/(ty concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE GILBERT IVORSTALL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Toms River, in the county of Ocean and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Fliers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved pair of pliers, more especially designed for the use of jewelers, and arranged to permit convenient and quick drawing out and shaping of the claws on new or old worn settings of the 'Iifl'any, skeleton or other type.
Theinvention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, which will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improvement as applied; Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional side elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2; Figs. 4 and 5 are face views of the jaws; Fig. 6 is a sectional side elevation of a modified form of the improvement, and Fig. 7 is an enlarged transverse section of the same on the line 7-7 of Fig. 6.
The jaws A and B of the pliers are connected with each other by the usual pivot O and are provided with handles D and E adapted to be taken hold of by the jeweler to manipulate the tool or implement. The inner face of the jaw A is provided with a groove A extending from the terminal of the jaw inward in the direction of the length of the jaw, the groove being preferably slightly tapering and forming a seat for the claw F of the setting F to rest in, as plainly indicated in Figs. 1 and 2. The inner face of the other' jaw B is provided with an integral ridge or bead B extending transversely at or near the terminal of the jaw and forming a drawing and forming member engaging the inner surface of the claw F seated in the groove A. For reshaping broken or worn claws F, .for holding regularly cut stones in the setting, the ridge or bead B is rounded ofi', as shown in Figs. 1 and 2; and for using the tool on claws for rose-cut or flat bottom stones, the ridge or bead B is pointed, as indicated in Figs. 6 and 7. y
In using the tool, the claw is seated with its outer face in the forward end of the groove A, and then the operator presses the handles D and E towards each other', so as to'engage the ridge B with the inner surface of the claw F at or near the base thereof, and the operator then by retaining the pressure on the handles and drawing the tool or implement outwardly, the claw F is drawn out and shaped at the same time, thus reforming and reshaping the claw for securely holding the stone in place in the setting F.
From the foregoing it will be seen that by the use of the tool a new or worn out setting of the Tiffany, skeleton or other type can be readily drawn out and properly shaped, to securely hold the stone in position in the setting.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as n'ew and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A pair of pliers for forming claws in settings provided with jaws, of which one is pro- Avided with a seat for the claw to rest in, and the other jaw is provided with a drawing and fashioning member raised on the working face of the jaw opposite the said seat and extending transversely across such seat.
A pair of pliers for forming claws in settings provided with jaws, of which one is provided with a seat for the claw to rest in, and the other jaw is provided with a drawing and fashioning member consisting of a bead raised on the working face of the jaw opposite the said seat and extending transversely thereof at the outer end of the jaw.
3. A pair of pliers comprising a pair of handled, pivoted jaws, of which one is provided with a longitudinally extending groove for a claw to rest in said groove tapering inwardly from the outer end of the aw, and the other jaw being provided on its inner face with an integral drawing and forming member operating in conjunction with the said groove.
4. A pair of pliers having jaws, of which one is provided on its inner face with a tapering groove extending from the terminal of the jaw inward in the direction of the length oi IOO the jaw, the other j aW having a transversely l name to this specification in the presence of extending rilge at it inner aoedopposte the tWo subscribing Witnesses. sai seat an near t e outer en of the `aW, l the said ridge forming a drawing and forriing GEORGE GILBERT WGRSTALL.. 5 member for the olaW seated in the said Witnesses:
