Be it known that I, MAR'riN H. Ross, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Devices for Eleva tors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates more a device for preventing operation of the ele- IO vator-car when a door in the enclosure of the elevator shaft is open; and its object is the production of simple, inexpensive, and ellicient means for this purpose, elevators of all types.

Referring now to the drawings in detail, like numerals of reference refer to like parts in the several figures.
The numeral 1 designates the elevator shaft, 2 the elevator-car adapted to travel in said shaft, and 3 the controlling-meehanism whereby the operation of the elevatorcar is controlled. In Figs. 1., 3, and 4, the
. controlling-mechanism is shown as including an operating-lever 4 having a segmental lockmember 5 provided with a series of apertures 6.

The lower end of rod 18 is adapted to lock into the center aperture of the series of apertures in the segmental lockmember 5 of the operating-lever. By the use of a series of apertures, assurance is had, that in the event of the segmental lock-memher not being positioned to bring the center l, aperture therein in line with the lock-rod on stopping the car, movement of said lockmember to the right or left with a view of starting the car, will cause the lock-rod to l engage one of the end apertures before sufficient movement can be given said lockmember to cause the ear to ascend or descend, as the case may be. In this manner, positive assurance is had that the car cannot be started until the lock-rod is elevated, 1 by mechanism to be presently described.

Arranged within the shifting-bar between the strips 13 thereof is a stop 22 horizontally disposed and pivotally secured to said strips; the free end of said stop having an extension 23 which bears against the inner side of the adjacent block 14 and serves to limit the outward movement of said stop. A spring leis secured at one end of the intermediate block of the shifting-bar and bears against the inner edge of said pivoted stop. Said stop when in normal position, extends beyond the outer edge of the shifting-bar and on opening 1 the door or gate of the elevator, the front edge thereof is engaged by a roller 25 revoluble in brackets 26 secured to the upper end of I said gate; said roller and brackets constitutl l l l 5 l l l 1 l ing an actuating-device for operating the locking-mechanism. As the shifting-bar is moved backward, the spring-pressed stop is released from roller 25; such action being caused by a trip 27 fixedly applied to the J elevator-car in a position to cause the outer projecting portion of the stop 22 to engage it, immediately the actuating device on the door engages said stop and shifts the shiftingbar. After the said stop is depressed sufficiently by said trip to permit the roller 25 of the actuating-device to clear it, the door may be opened to its full extent, or as far as necessary to permit entrance to or exit from the car. I Vhen the roller 25 of the actuatingdevice engages stop 22 and shifts bar 11, the movement of the latter is imparted to lockrod 18 and causes the lower end of the same to enter one of the apertures 6 in the seg mental lock-member of operating-lever 4, thus locking the latter against movement and preventing operation of the elevator-car while the door or gate 8 is open. In the event of the locking end of lock-rod 18 striking the segmental lock-member 6 between two apertures, a slight movement of said member (insufficient to cause operation of the elevator-car), will bring one of the apertures in line with said lock-rod, which latter can then gravitate and engage the registering aperture, the slot 21 in the upper end of said rod permitting such action.
The operating-mechanism of the car remains locked until the door or gate is closed. A releasing-device 28 in the form of an ear or lug projecting upward from the top of the door or gate at the inner end thereof, is adapted to engage a stud 29 projecting from the intermediate block 14 of the shifting-bar and cause the latter to be moved forward, whereupon the lock-rod 18 is elevated and disengaged from lock-member 5 of the operating-lever. The extent of movement necessary to lock or unlock the operating-lever is very small, so that the door or gate will have closed the door-way when the releasingdevice engages stud 29, the final movement of the gate, during which time the shiftingbar is returned to its forward position, may be utilized to actuate the lock of the gate.
In Fig. 8 my invention is shown applied to an elevator-car having an operating-rope 30. I/Vhen applied to a car of this type, the rope is provided with buttons or enlargements 31, between which the bifurcated end of a slide bolt 32 is adapted to be laced when the floor of the car is even with t e floor of the building and the door or gate of the elevator is opened. Slide-bolt 32 is guided in a bracket 33 secured to the car and at its opposite end has a vertical longitudinal slot 34 into which the wedge-end 35 of lock-rod 18 is adapted to fit. As the latter is lowered, the wedge-face thereof engages the forward end of slot 34 and forces said bolt forward,
causing the bifurcated end to straddle the operating-rope between the enlargements 31 thereon. When the door or gate is being I closed and the lock-rod 18 elevated, the slide bolt is returned by a spring 36 interposed between brackets 33 and a shoulder 37 formed by enlarging the slotted end of the slide-bolt. If desired, the lock-bar and other exposed parts may be enclosed within a housing so that the operator of the elevator- ,car cannot manipulate the same.
This invention is applicable to all styles and types of elevators; slight changes only, such as suggest themselves to any skilled mechanic, being necessary to meet the various requirements. I therefore do not limit myself to any details of construction, except to claim the preferred construction and arrangement of parts herein illustrated in addition to laying claim to my invention in any form or arrangement coming under the principle disclosed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is,
1. In an elevator, the combination with the elevator-shaft having a door, and an elevator equipped with controlling-mechanism to control the operation thereof, of a lock-rod vertically movable, a shifting-bar horizontally movable, mechanism between said lockrod and said shifting-bar and in operative connection therewith, and means on said door to shift the shiftingbar in opposite directions when opening and closing said door.
2. In an elevator, the combination with the elevator-shaft having a door, and an elevator-car equipped with controlling-mechanism to control the operation thereof, of a lock-rod vertically movable, a shifting-bar j horizontally movable, a bell-crank lever piv- I otally secured to said car and having one arm thereof connected with said lock-rod, a rod connected at one end to the other arm of said bell-crank lever and at its other end to said shifting-bar, and means on said door for actuating the shifting-bar in opposite directions.
3. In an elevator, the combination with the elevator-shaft having a door, and an elevator-car equipped with controlling-mechanism to control the operation thereof, of a j lock-rod vertically movable, a shifting-bar I horizontally movable and having a springpressed stop pivotally secured thereto, mechanism between said lock-rod and said shifting-bar and in operative connection therei with, means on said door to engage said stop to shift said shiftingbar in one direction, a trip on the elevator-car to cause said stop to i be depressed during the movement of said i shifting-bar, and a lug on the door engaging I said shifting-bar to shift the same in the opposite direction. 4. In an elevator, the combination with i the elevator-shaft having a door, and an ele vator-car equipped with e0ntrolling1neeh anism to control the operation thereof, of a leek-rod vertieally movable, a shifting-bar horizontally movable and having a stop pi otally secured thereto and projecting with one end beyond spring secured to said bar and holding said step in projected condition, meehanisni between said look-rod and said shifting-bar and in operative connect ion therewith, a roller on said door to engage said stop and eanse the shifting-bar to be shifted in one direetion, a
