bondale, in the county of Laekawanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and usefulImprovement in Elevator SafetyDevices ot'which the following is a This inventioncontemplates the provision of mechanism whereby the opening of the door of an elevator-hoistway will securely lock the starting and'stopping rope of the elevator-car in such manner as to preclude the operation of such car until after the closing of the door. Its purpose is to preclude accidents due to the hoistway-doors being open while the elevatorcar is in operation. j
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section of a hoistway provided with sliding doors and an elevatorcaroperating in such hoistway. Fig. 2 is a similar View showing the invention as applied to an elevator operating in a hoistway equipped with hinged or-swinging doors. The operation of the structure shown in Figs. 1 and 3 is as follows: The hoistway doors in this embodiment of the invention are of the sliding variety. \Vhcn the car reaches the floor, the door A is opened by sliding the same toward the left in the ways. During this movement the bar e is brought into contact with the roller E, (first at the heveied end of said bar,) whereby the roller i pressed finwardly toward the interior of the car. This movement operates the bell crank mechanism, consisting of arms C C and D,

connecting-rod G causing a corresponding movement of that end of the lever F to which the rod-G is attached, whereby the clutch mechanism is brought into operative relation to the starting and stopping rope, so as to grip the same and thereby preclude its movement while the door A remains in open position. Before the rope if can be operated it is necessary to close the door A. Turning now to the structure illustrated in Figs. 2 and t, it Will be seen that the construction of the safety device is the same as that heretofore described, with the exception of the means coaoting with the door for causing such device to operate. In this instance, as before stated, the door A is of the hinged variety, conventional hinges being shown at o The inner or hinged end of the door is provided with a cam H, here shown as operating through the slot 71. in the doonjamb Normally-that is to say, when the door is in closed position, as shown in l-the cam II is out of engagement with the roller 13., When the door is opened, however, said cam is brought into contact with said roller, and the latter is pressed inwardly toward the interior of the car, whereupon the same operation takes place as that heretofore described in connection ith the structure of Figs. 1 and 3, when the bar 6 of the sliding door A presses the roller in thesame direction-i. (9., the clutch mechanism operated to firmly grip the starting and stopping rope and preclude the the movement of the car.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a safety device for elevators having the operating-rope on the latch side of the hoistway-door, the combination of a car, a bellcrank lever attached thereto, a roller on one end of said bell-crank lever adapted to roll upon the hoistway-door when said door is moved, a lever upon the opposite side of the ear, said lever having a clutch for the operatin g-rope at one end thereof,and an ad ustable connection between the ends of said levers, substantially as set forth.
