SAFETY-RAZOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 23, 1 907.
Application filed September 18, 1906. Serial No. 278,916.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HERBERT AUGUSTUS BULLARD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Razors,"of which thefollowing is a specification.
My invention relates to safety razors, and has for its object to provide a razor of this class, of improved construction, simple, and economical.
I attain my object by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, of which Figure 1 is a side view of my razor, Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of my razor with the blade attached, and Fi 3 a top view.
Fig. 4 is aview of my razor lade, and Fig. 5
is a vertical transverse sectional view of my holder wlth the blade removed. 7
S1m1lar numerals'of reference refer to sim .larparts throughout the several views,
whic are all on an enlarged scale.
My invention consists in a general way of the'improved holder, the improved blade, and the fin roved means of securing the blade to the older.
More particularly, and describing the holder 1, first, it consists of a sheet of spring metal stamped and shaped into substantially the form shown in the drawing. The guards 2, 3, usually provided in safety razors, are stamped out of the sheet along on lines somewhat near the extremities thereof. The sheet is folded at its center into two sides, and formed into angles along the aforesaid lines, the tops of said angles forming blade supports, and the ends turned outwardly toform part of the blade securing means 4, 5. The other part of the blade securing means is on the blade itself, and consists of the longer sides of an oblong aperture 7 in said blade. The spring'of the metal of said holder is so set as totend to throw the parts 4 and 5 away from each other, and to cause the aforesaid sides to spring outwardly against the said longer sides. Said sides are made of such'size as to fit the sides supporting 4 and 5 snugly. The aperture .7 is made of such size as to admit the passage of the arts 4, 5 when they are pinched together. lfVhen they are released they s ring outto engage the blade, an secure it against the guards 2, 3.
whereby one cutting edge is caused to lie closer to the edge of its guard, than the other cutting edge lies to its corresponding guard, and thus enables the user to shave closely or not as he desires.
- The holder is by the described construction a spring-box having open ends and two outwardly tending flat springs carrying uards and having a part supporting the blade and having its extremities bent outwardly. The outward pressure of the aforesaid flat springs is received by the longer sides of the aforesaid oblong aperture of the blade, and the outwardly bent portions 4, 5 act to secure said blade againstihe guard portion 2, 3, in co-operation with 'said longer sides.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. A holder for safety razor blade, comprising a sheet of spring metal shaped to form two outwardly-pressing flat spring members joined at one end to form a finger and thumb hold, said members intermediate their ends bent to form an angular ridge constituting a blade support, guards formed along the apex of each angular ridge, the upper extremities of said spring members curved outwardly and downwardly in opposite directions to each other and constituting bladesecuring means.
2. A blade for safety razors comprising a rectan ular body having opposite side cutting e ges and provided with an-oblong aperture, the center of which is nearer one cutting edge than the other and one of which cutting edges is of greater width than the other cutting edge. i
3. A safety razor blade comprising a body having opposite cutting edges and provided with an oblong aperture, the center of which is nearer onecutting edge than the other and nearer to one end of the body than to the other.
4. In a safety razor a blade having opposite cutting edges and an oblong aperture the center of which is nearer one cutting edge than the other.
5. A safety razor comprising a holder shaped out of a sheet of spring metal into two other, and the longer sides whereof are outwardly pressing flat springs oined at one adapted to snugly engage said springs. Io
vend to form a finger and thumb hold, and I In testimony whereof I hereunto sign my rovided with guards, blade supports and name in the presence of two Witnesses.
lade-securing means at the other end, in HERBERT AUGUSTUS BULLARD. combination with a blade having opposlte Witnesses: cutting edges and an oblong aperture the LEO MUND,
center of which is nearer one edge than the FINLAY CooK.
