SHIELD FOR TYPE-WRITERS.
T0 all, w/tom it' may concern:
Be it known that I, LUMAN C. STOUGHTSN,
at olumbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shields for Type- Writers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to shields for typewriters and has for its object the provision of a device of this character adapted to be placed between the sheet of carbon paper in a typewriter and the sheet next above said carbon sheet, when it is desired to erase matter upon the upper sheet, said shield Aserving to prevent the pressure of the eraser from being imparted to the carbon sheet and consequently preventing the smudging of the carbon copy which lies below thecarbon sheet,
-Specication of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 7, 1907. Serial No. 361,015.
said shield being constructed in such manner` that vit may be readily placed in position or. removed when desired.
Further objects and advantages of the involition will be set forth in the detailed description which now follows.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure l is a perspective View of a portion of atypewriter showing my invention applied thereto, Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the platen of the typewriter, illustrating the position in which my improved shield lies ywhen in use,
' and, Fig. 3 is a plan view of the shield.
Like numerals designate corresponding i" parts in all of the figures of the drawing.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 5 designates the platen of a typewriter. The shield forming the sub ject matter of the present invention, comprises a body portion-6 and a rearwardly extending triangular portion 7 This triangular portion is perforated at S to permit the shield to be hung upon a nail when desired and the apex of this triangular portion is slightly upturned as at 9.
-10 designates the usual shield or backing strip over `which the paper which is being written upon, lies. The position of this paper has been clearly illustrated in Fig. 2, where the numeral l1 designates the upper sheet, or the sheet upon which the original is to be produced. A carbon sheet 12 produces a copy of the matter upon the original, upon a sheet 13. It is to prevent the smudging of Patented April 23, 1907.
y this Sheet is, that the shield-forming the Subjectmatter of the present invention, is provided, said shield being inserted between the sheet ll and the carbon sheet 12, when it is desired to erase matter from the sheet 11.
Heretofore it has been customary to form these vshields in such manner that they co1,- form closely to the curvature of the platen 5 and without any rearwardly extending part to provide a Grasp for the operator. It has been found iificult to remove a shield of this type after it has been used, for the Yreason that it clings closely to the surface of the carbon sheet and must be picked up by the operator inserting his or her finger nail between the shield and the carbon sheet.
Itis the object of the present invention to provide a shield having the triangular rearwardly extending portion with the -upturned end 9, this upturned end being supported by the shield 10 in such manner, thatit may be readily grasped by the operator when the shield is to be removedor when it is to be placed in position. A
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that simple and efficient means are herein provided for accomplishing the objects of the invention, but While the elements shown and described are well adapted to serve the purposes for which they are intended, it is to be understood that the invention is not limitednto the precise construction set forth, but includes within its purview such changes as may be. made Within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim, is:
l. Aiprpewritcr shield comprising a body platen, said shield terminating in a triangular rearwardly extending portion which forms a grasp. for the operator, and which is of such size as .to rest upon and be supported by a portion of the typewriter carriage.
i .f e l 5 3. A typewriter shield comprieing a body size as to rest upon and be s upported by a platen, said shield terminating in a triangular 5 rearwardly extendin g portion Which forms a grasp for tlie operator, the apex of said trianguiar portion being rearwardly extending slightly uptur'ned, said portion being of such FRANK G. CAMPBELL, A. L. PHELPS.
