To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. STEPHEN D. HYDE, a citizen of the United States. residing at Lincoln, in the county of Lancaster and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nail-Extractors, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention 1s the production of an improved tool for extracting nails from the substance in which they are embedded, and for prying open a box.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1. is a perspective view of a tool embodying the features of my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken through said tool on dotted line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on dotted line 3 3 of F 1. Fig. 4 is a detail View of the indenting stud. Figs. 5 and 6 illustrate a modification of said indenting stud, Fig. 5 representing said modified stud in relation to the remainder of the tool, while Fig. 6 is a detail side elevation of said stud.
In the drawings, 1 refers to the body portion of the tool, and 2 to an upwardly curved, bifurcated claw extending forwardly from said body portion 1 and preferably formed integral therewith.
In the body portion 1 is formed an opening 3 within which is secured in any suitable manner the stem 1 of a hammer head 5. A
handle 6, formed integral with the body portion 1, extends rearwardly therefrom.
One side of the body portion 1 is cut away at 7, and upon this side is provided a perforated ear 8 to which is pivoted a handle 9, a pivot pin 10 passing through said perforated ear 8 and two similar ears 11 formed integral with the handle 9. In the side of the handle 9 near its connection with the body portion 1 is formed an opening 12 adapted to receive the stem 13 of an indenting stud 1 1, said stud having a wedge-shape point with which a series of dents may be made about the head of a nail. The stem 13 of the indenting stud 14 is fixed within its opening 12 in any suitable way.
An opening 15 is formed onehalf in each of the adjacent faces of the body portion 1 and the handle 9, and upon the under side of each of said members and alined with said opening 15 is a pincher jaw 16, each jaw being formed integral with the member carrying it. The lower end of each pincher jaw is rounded, and the opening 15 is continued in said aws in the concavity 17.
By reference to Figs. 2 and 3 it will be seen that the rounded, concave lower end of each pincher jaw provides a shoulder 17 adapted to support the head of the nail being ex tracted.
Upon the upper side of the body portion 1 and conforming substantially thereto in outline is secured a plate 18 provided with an opening 19 alined with the opening 15, said plate being designed to cover the joint between the handles 6 and 9. In the corner of said plate overhanging the handle 9 is formed a slot 20, one wall 21 of which is beveled to provide a cutting edge. This cutting edge, with the inner edge 22 of the handle 9 adjacent to said cutting edge, forms a wire cutter.
In use, if the head of the nail to be drawn projects slightly above the surface of the substance into which the nail was driven, said nail is gripped between the pincher jaws 16 and extracted, the forward end of the body portion 1 serving as a fulcrum. If the nail has been driven so deeply into the wood that its head cannot be caught by the claw 2 or the pincher jaws 16, a series of dents is made about the nail head by means of the indenting stud 14, to give access to said nail. In using the wire cutter, the wire is inserted into the slot 20, whereupon by moving the handles 6 and 9 toward each other the wire will be sheared between the cutting edge 21 and the inner edge 22 of the handle 9.
In Figs. 5 and 6 I have shown a modification of the indenting stud 1 1. In this construction the indenting member is in the form of a head 23 provided with a securing stem 24, which head has a central opening 25 in its lower end. About the central opening 25 is arranged a series of beveled indenting teeth or points 26, the spaces between said teeth being continued in the sides of the head in the grooves 27. In operation, the head 23 is placed in position over the head of the nail, with the indenting points 26 surrounding said head, and said teeth forced into the wood about the nail head by pressure applied in any suitable manner. The head of the nail, being thus set out from the substance in which it is embedded, is then grasped by the pinchers 16 as before described.
The hammer head 5 and the indenting member 14: or 23 might be formed integral with the members supporting them, and various other changes might be made in the embodiment herein shown without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
I therefore desire to have it understood that I i do not limit myself to the particular details herein set forth.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a nail extractor, in combination, a body portion having a handle fixed rigidly thereto; a handle pivotally connected with said body portion, registering grooves being formed in said body portion and said pivoted handle; and cooperating pi'ncher jaws projecting from said body portion and said pivoted handle in alinement with said grooves, the inner faces of said jaws being longitudinally concave, the concavities of said jaws communicating with said grooves, whereby the head of a nail may be received between said jaws and in said grooves, and a shoulder formed at the inner lower end of each of said jaws.
2. In a nail extractor, in combination, a body portion having a handle fixed rigidly thereto; a handle pivotally connected with said body portion, registering grooves being formed in said body portion and said pivoted handle; and cooperating pincher jaws on said bodyportio'n and said pivoted handle in alinement with said grooves, said grooves being adapted to receive the head. and body of a nail.
3. In a nail extractor, in combination, a body portion having a handle fixed rigidly thereto; a handle pivotally connected with said body portion, registering grooves being formed in said body portion and said piv-.
oted handle; and cooperating pincher jaws on the under side of said body portion and said pivoted handle rearward of the pivot therefor in alinement with said. grooves, said grooves being adapted to receive the head and body of a nail, the forward end of saiddle, integral therewith respectively, said jaws having concave inner faces constituting extensiojns of the walls of said registering grooves.
5. In a nail extractor, in combination, a body portion having a handle fixed rigidly thereto; a handle pivotally connected with said body portion, said body portion and pivoted handle being provided with registering grooves; pincher jaws projecting from said body portion and said pivoted handle in alinement with said grooves, the inner faces of said aws being provided with continuations of said grooves whereby thehead of a nail may be received between said jaws and in said grooves.
