UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FASTENING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 23, 1907.
Application filed March 10, 1906. Serial No. 305,227.
. T etZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK DUBY, a citizen of the United States, and residing at WVest Point, in the county of Orange and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Devices, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to'make and use the same.
This invention relates to fastenin devices, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class designed particularly for use'in connection with a shoe to hold the laces thereof, but which may be used for holding glove laces and for other purposes.
In the accompanying drawing I have shown my improved fastening device in detail and I have also shown it applied to a shoe, and the invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which:- I
Figure 1 is a front view of the top or lace portion of a shoe provided with my improved lace fastening device; Fig. 2 a front view of the fastening device detached; Fig. 3 a side view thereof looking toward the left hand side of Fig. 2; F i .4 a section on the line 44 of Fig. 2; and, Fig. 5 a section on the line 55 of Fig. 2 and showing the pivoted jaw which forms a part of the device in 0perative position in full lines, and in the raised or inoperative position in dotted lines.
In the accompanying drawing Figs. 1' to 5 inclusive are shown on an enlarged scale, and in said drawing I have also shown at a the top portion of a shoe provided with the usual eyelets a and a lace b; and in the practice of my invention I provide a fastening device or lace holder 0 composed of two separate plates, a back plate 0 and a front plate 0 connected at one end and projecting parallel as shown in the drawing, one of said plates being longer than the other; and one of said plates, the back plate 0 as shown in the .drawing, is provided with a longitudinal rib 0 while the other, the front plate 0 as shown in the drawing, is provided with a corresponding longitudinal groove 0 in the inner face thereof, and the rib c and groove extend only approximately to the end of the front plate 0 At one end of the fastening device, the end at which the separate plates 0 and c are connected, is a laterally directed member 0 which is U-shaped in form and in the top of which is pivoted as shown at c an arm 0 provided at its pivoted end with an angularly arranged jaw 0 provided with teeth d as shown.
In practice the edge a of one of the side flaps of the shoe is inserted into the U- shaped member a, the arm 0 being held in the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 5, and said arm is then turned down into the position shown in full lines in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, in which position the jaw c engages the flap a and securely holds the fastening device in connection therewith. After the shoe has been laced in the usual manner, and the ends 6 of the lace drawn taut, they are passed between the separate plates 0 and c of the fastening device and are drawn down wardly between said plates and compressed between the same, in which operation the rib c and roove c engage the said ends of the lace and securely hold the same, and in order to unlace the shoe the ends 6 of the lace are drawn down from between said parts of the fastening device.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is;
A fastening device composed of two yokeshaped members integrally connected at their closed end and at right angles to each other, one of said yoke-shaped members being composed of two closely adjacent parallel plates provided in their adjacent surfaces one with a longitudinal groove and the other with a corresponding rib which extends into said groove, the other yoke-shaped member being provided with 'a pivoted transverse jaw member by which the device is secured to a shoe or other article.
In testimony that I claim theforegoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this seventh day of March 1906.
FREDERICK DUBY.
