ADJUSTABLE GEAR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 30,1906. Serial No. 341,365.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ERNEST T. MATHEW? SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Gear, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to an improved construction of gearing in which the toothed rim portion of the gear is made separate from the center hub or web portion and on which center portion said rim is adjustably mounted.
The object of my invention is to provide a gear of simple and practical construction in which the independent rim may be firmly atgrading mills, rolling mills, or the like, in
which are used. rolls such as those chased or figured on their surfaces, swaging rolls, eccentric rolls, etc., the figures on which must register accurately in order to produce satisfactory results. It is found in practice when such rolls are used that the slightest wear in the mechanism produces imperfect work and that this Wear must be taken u or regulated by moving or adjusting one rol with relation to the other, and the most practicalway to accomplish this is to use an adjustable gear, such as that above described, whereby one roll may be set either forward or back and nicely regulated and adjusted into perfect alignment to register with its corresponding said adjustable gear to a set of rolls.
Referring to the drawings, at 1 is the rim of the gear wheel provided on its periphery with gear teeth 2. On the face of the rim is towards the center of the gear;
an annular flange 3 extending inward toward the center, which flange is provided at intervals with elongated holes 4 for the reception of the retaining bolts 5 which pass therethrough to secure said rim to the center portion. The face of this rim has oppositely arranged ears 55 which are long and extend down over and beyond the annular flange 3 The center portion of the gear is provided with a hub 6, also an annular ring 7 that is adapted to fit closely into a corresponding recess 8 in the toothed rim. This ring is provided with threaded bolt holes to receive the retaining bolts that pass through the elongated holes in the rim. The hub and ring are connected by a series of arms 9 or the center portion may be a continuous web if desired. Located on these arms at 10 10 are raised portions or bosses through which adjustable set screws 11 are threaded, the usual check nuts 1212 being employed to lock the screws in the desired position when set. The said ears 55 on the rim extend inward between these bosses and are engaged on each side by the point of one of the said screws.
In practice this gear is more particularly adapted for use on rolls whose surfaces demand that they should accurately register. To this end the driving arrangement of the rolls may be like that illustrated in Fig. 3 whereby the adjustable gear ispermanently keyed by its hub 6 to one of the rolls 13 through the keyway 15 to the roll shaft 16 and after the driving shaft 17 and pinion 18 are in place and keyed fast in position and geared up to the opposite driving roll, as it must be in order to have them work in time with each other, it is a very difficult matter to alter the surface of one roll with relation to that of the other without the use of a device such as that described by which this adjustment may be accomplished.
By the construction illustrated where the set screws are arranged so near the periphery of the large driving gear to engage each side of the inwardly projecting ear of the adjustable rim a most accurate and delicate adjustment may be had which is accomplished by first loosening the retaining bolts 19 and then operating the adjusting screws. After being set in the desired osition the rim may then be connected rigi y to the center por tion by again setting up the retaining bolts thereby fastening the Whole mechanism firmly in itsnew position.
By theuseof this simple devicemuchtime 5 and labor is saved.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
