I Letters Patent No.66,35i4, dated July 2,1867.-
IMPRO'VEMENT IN GEAR-GUTTBRS.
ttige Stlgtmle rennl tu iu time tcttecs ufeni .mit mating ,tutt nf tige stmt KNOWALL MEN BY THESE PRESENTS:
That I, H. N. KEABLES, of the city'und county of Worcester, und Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have 'inventedu certain new und useful Improvementl in Cutters; und I do hereby declare that the following is n drive the cutter than it does to drive one of the same size mede according to the old plztn full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being hndto the ztccompany port of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents aside view of a. cutter for cutting gears, mede according to my invention, and
'Figure 2 represents a section ot' iig. 1, on line A. B, look-ing in the direction'indiceted by the arrow.
As cutters huve heretofore been made the cutting-teeth A have followed each other in regula-r order and at equal distances apart, and those who. nre acquainted with or skilled in the nrt of gear-cutting know that 'oftentimes the chips so clog up and crowd inbetween the cutting-teeth and the sides-of the cdgs on the blank being cut as to injure the work, and often'to such an extent as to derange thewhol'e operation. I'n alnrge class of work it is very important to have the sides of' the cogs cut with great precision and evenness, and it is a greet source oi" annoyance and expense to -have the Work injured by the clogging or chattering of' the cutters.
To lemedy the foregoing1 and other-objections to the old style of cutters is the object of my present invention, and whichconsists in leaving n clearing spnce, a, at regular and equal distances nipert,l und which distance I have found to produce the best results, if m'rainged so es to occur after .two teeth, as shown in g. 1. It might ocour'efter three or niore't'eeth, but I prefertwo teeth.I The resultis that the cutter always runs-smooth and easy, doing its work even and true, and never clogging up. The same principle could be applied with .f food eiect to side or slabbing cutters, as theyare culled.
With my cutter there is no chattering and the work is unequalled, besides it requires less power to ing drawings, forming a.
The mode of using the cutter isthcsane as that in common use, the cutter being placed upon n revolving arbor, spindle, or similar device. l Heving described my improved cutter, what I claim therein as new and of my invention, und desire to secure by Letters Patent, isi t A gear-cuttingtoel of continuous operation by revolution, the cutting-teeth of which are arranged radially et equal distances from their centre of revolution in groups, leaving equidistant and 'equal-sized between said groups, and otherwise constructed substantially as and for the purposes set forth.'
H. N. "KEABLES.
