RAILWAY-RAIL TIE AND FASTENER- Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. GRovE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Harrisburg, in the county of Dauphin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway- Rail Ties and Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use thesame.
This invention relates to an improved metallic railway tie and fastener.
The object of the invention is to provide a metallic railway tie and fastener which is simple in construction and effective in operation and which may be used for either steam or electrical roads.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a railway rail applied to this improved tie which is shown in end elevation; Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of one side of a tie with the applied rail shown in vertical section; Fig. 3 represents a similar view of the other side of the tie; and Fig. 4 represents a perspective view of the tie with a part broken off for convenience in illustration; Fig. 5 represents a perspective view of one of the fastening members detached; Fig. 6 represents a similar view of the other fastening member.
In the embodiment herein illustrated a tie 1 of any suitable metal comprises an upright member orweb 2 having a flanged base 3 and a head 4 provided with oppositely-disposed, longitudinally extending lateral flanges 5 and 6. The upper faces of the base flanges are beveled or inclined downwardly from the web toward the free edges thereof. Arranged below the head on opposite sides of the tie and spaced therefrom are longitudinally-extending lateral ribs or flanges 7 and 8 for a purpose hereinafter described.
Each tie 1 is provided with two recesses as 9 in the head thereof, said recesses extending down to the flanges or ribs 7 and 8 to receive the rails as 50, the bases as 51 of which rest on said flanges 7 and 8 which form an extended support for the rails.
The rails are disposed in said recesses as 9 and are secured to the tie by means of fastening members 10 and 20 arranged on opposite sides of the tie. The fastening member 10 comprises a block 11 having an inclined lower face 12 of a thickness sufficient to span the space between the top of the rail base 51 and the upper face of the head 4 of the tie so as to lie flush with the top of said head. block 10 has a laterally-extending arm in the form of a plate 13 projecting from one side thereof with its upper edge arranged a sufficient distance below the top of the block 11 to permit it to fit closely under one of the flanges 5 or 6 of the tie head. This plate 13 is made of a width to fit between the flanges 6 and 8 or 5 and 7 on opposite sides of the tie. The lower edge of the plate 13 is provided at its inner end with a shoulder 14 against which the edge of the rail abuts at one side. A similarly constructed rail fastener 20 is disposed on the opposite side of the tie at the other side of the rail and when at certain points along the track, it is desired to brace the rail and hold it securely, a fastener having a block 11. extended vertically as shown at 16 is employed. The inner face of this vertical extension fits closely against the web 52 of the rail 50 and its top fits under the tread 53 of the rail. The outer face of this extension 16 is preferably curved as shown at 17. Each of the arms or plates as 13 is provided with bolt-holes as 15 which register with the bolt-holes as 9 in the web 2 of the tie to receive bolts as .18 by means of which the fasteners are secured in place.
In the use of this improved tie and fastener, the ties are first placed in proper-position along the track and the rails as 50 of or dinary construction are placed in the recesses as 9 in the ties as 1 and the fastening member 10 is slid transversely of the tie on one side of the rail into position with its block 11. fitting tightly between the web 52 of the rail and one wall of the recess 9 and with its lower inclined face 12 snugly fitting the inclined base flange ofthe rail, and with the arm or plate 1.3 closely fitting against the web of the tie between the flanges 6 and 8. This plate is thus securely held against vertical or tilting movement by the-flanges and a bolt as 18 is"passed through the registering apertures 15 in the plate 9 in the tie and secured by a nut as 19. The fastening mem ber 20 is then slid into position in the recess 9 on the other side of the rail and secured in the same manner as the member 10 with the vertical extension 16 thereof when employed, arranged as. hereinbefore described. When fastening a rail and tie together at oints where fish plates are used, they are fastened in the same manner as that above described, except that the fasteners must be made This smaller in proportion to the thickness of'the fish plates.
Various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention, as defined by the appended claims.
I claim as my invention 1. A metallic rail tie comprising a supporting base, a head having a lateral flange and spaced recesses to receive the rails, a longitudinally-extending lateral flange disposed below said headed flange and spaced therefrom and fastening members for securing a rail to said tie having means for engaging said spaced flanges said members being arranged on opposite sides of the tie and extending longitudinally thereof.
2. A metallic rail tie comprising a supporting base, a head having lateral flanges on opposite sides thereof and spaced rail receiving recesses,' longitudinally extending lateral flanges disposed below and spaced from the flanges of said head, fastening members adapted to fit in said recesses between the between said-spaced flanges.
3. The combination of a metal railway tie comprising a supporting base and a head having spaced rail receiving recesses, of members for securin a rail to said tie, one of which consists of a block shaped to fit in the space between one side of the rail web and the side Wall ofthe recess in said tie and having a laterally-extending apertured arm for attachment to one side of the tie and the-other member consisting of a 'blockihaving'a vertical extension to fit the rail web under the tread thereof and havin a lateral arm forattachment to the'other side of the tie.
