L. JAMES. HARNESS HooK. APPLICATION FILED MAY 1,'1906.
Allorney;l
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARNESS-HOOK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 23, 1907.
Application filed May 1.1906. Serial No. 314,666.
Be it known that I, LEVI JAMES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus Junction, in the county of Louisa and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Harness-Hooks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in. harness hooks.
The object of my invention is to provide a hook of this character which is applicable especially to harness, and in which a leather tongue is formed integral with the strap to prevent the hook from being accidentally disengaged from the ring or loop when it is in engagement.
Another object of my invention is to provide a more simple, cheap and effective hook -of this character than has heretofore been produced In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved hook as attached to a trace carrier 5 Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the hook disengaged from the trace carrier, Fig. 3 is a perspective view of Fig. 2, showing the leather tongue thrown upwardly Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line xof Fig. 2 and Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line y-fy of Fig. 2.
Referring now to the drawings7 1 represents the strap to which my improved hook is attached. The said strap, as shown, is of a double form having its looped end 2 passing through a ring 3 and the two ends 4 and 5 stitched together as shown at 6. While I have shown the strap as of a single piece and doubled, as described, it will be understood that the same could be in the form of two straps stitched together, or it vcould have an additional strap stitched to any part of the harness to which my hook is to be applied. The straps, adjacent each edge, are provided with a row of stitching 7 which extends clear to the end of the strap. The upper end 4 of the strap, on the inside of the stitching, is cut longitudinally of the strap and forms a tongue 8 at the end of the strap which is loose, as clearly shown in Fig. 8 of the shown, leaves a central longitudinal channel 9 between the narrow strips 10 left on the outside of the two rows of stitching. Within this channel isa plate 11 which is riveted to the lower strap 5 by means of rivets 12. The
4wardly and inwardly turned end 14 which forms a hook and is adapted to hook into the trace carrier 15.
While I have shown and described my hook applied. to a trace carrier, it will be understood that the same can be as readily applied to a ring or loop of almost any construction. v
The tongue 8, as clearly shown, does not extend to the end of the hook, but is of a length suflicient to extend considerably under the rearward end of the hook 14, and thus the said tongue serves as a means for preventing the hook from being disengaged from the carrier or ring to which it is applied. The lower strap under the plate 11, adjacent the hook, is provided with a loop 16 of l leather under which the tongue 8 passes, the said loop being of such a size that it frictionally engages the tongue and holds the same within the hook under the normal tension thereof and thus the hook is held against accidental disengagement with the carrier, ring or loop. v
In order to insert or remove the hook from the carrier or ring, the tongue 8 is moved within the loop until the outer end is brought from within the hooked member, so as to remove or insert the carrier or ring, the loop frictionally holding the tongue in its normal position.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
The combination with a double strap stitched together at each edge by a row of stitching, the upper strap cut on the inner drawings. The said tongue being cut, as side of each row of stitching and forming a IOO tongue, a hooked memberseoured Within the I name to this specification inthe presence of channel formed by the removal ofthe tongue, tWo subscribing Witnesses.
the said tongue bein@ adapted to pass Within 7 said hookedbmembe7 and a loop secured to LEX I JAMES 5 the loWer strap adjacent the hook and /Vtnesses:
through which the tongue passes. F. G. BAKER,
In testimony whereof I have signed my I D. N. JOHNSON.
