BOOK SUPPORT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 23, 1907.
Application filed April 18, 1906. Serial No.312,467,
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLARD SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Molinos, in the county ofTehama, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book-Supports and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has relation to book-supports and partitions for library shelves and tables.
It is the object of the invention to provide such improvements in devices of the kind mentioned as will enhance their usefulness, simplify their construction, and prevent the mislaying of the same, so that perplexity is avoided by not having them at hand when wanted.
The invention consists of a device comprising a horizontal foot-piece upon which one or more of the books may rest, a spacing or partition piece extending vertically from one edge of the foot-piece and having a round or arched and flanged top to act as a spacing means, said vertical part being provided with a hole for the engagement of a ring or the link of a chain therewith. for a purpose to be explained.
The invention will first be described in view of the annexed drawings, forming a part of this specification, and then be particularly pointed out in the claim.
Of the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of one of my improved supports and separating or spacing devices. Fig. 2 is a view of part of two book-shelves and books, showing a way in which my improvement may be used.
My invention is formed from thin stiif sheet metal and comprises, as already indi- Whether the device is used on a table or shelves, the foot-piece 5 will be so placed that the ends of one or more books may rest thereon with the vertical member 6 bearing against its side. In this position the flange 7 will act to stiffen the upper end of the up right part and space one set or collection of books from another.
When the invention is used on bookshelves, the upper part of the spacing and supporting member will be provided with holes 8 on opposite sides for the reception of a ring 9 on the end of a chain 10, which ring may be slipped on a rod 11, supported by screw-eyes or in any other suitable and convenient way beneath the front edge of each shelf. By this means the devices will be insured against becoming misplaced or from getting out of reach when wanted. When the support is used upon a table, the chain and rod not being necessary may not be employed' What is claimed as the invention is- The combination with a book-shelf and a rod secured to the front edge of the shelf, of a book supporting and spacing means comprising a horizontal foot part and a vertical supporting and spacing part, and a chain provided at one end with a ring engaging the said rod, the other end of the chain being connected with the book supporting and spacing device.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
