Description

/ssx y 4EDWARD HAMLIN, on DnLANcQNnW JERSEY.
V Letters Patent No. `85,090, dated December 22, 1868).
IMPROVEMENT IN' SWAGE FOR SAW-TEETH.
- The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Bev itknown that I, EDWARD Hmmm, of Delanco, Burlington county, State of-New Jersey, have invented a Swage for the Teeth of Saws; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe same.
My invention consists of an instrument composed of parts arranged and adaptedto each other, in the peculiar manner fully described hereafter, so as to form a swage, which, while it serves to upset'the cutting-points of saw-teeth, will, at the same time, determine their proper width and shape.
In order-to enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe Yits construction and operation, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms apart of this specification, and in whichwhich with the main 'body of the stem are two abrupt shoulders, c c, on the latter.
The edges d d of the stem A are slightly inclined, and are so adapted to the slot of a sleeve, B, that the stem will penetrate the same to a short distance' back ofthe shoulders c c, where the stem can be wedged tight to thel sleeve, the stem tting snugly into the saine in a lateral direction.
angular recesses, lwith inclined sides.
Two pieces of steel, D and D', with swaged ends z, are ltted snugly to the interiorof the sleeve B, the outer edges ofthe said pieces D and Dbeing adapted to the bevelled. end Qi the slot in the sleeve, while their inner edges are adapted to the parallel portions x :c of
the edges of the projection l), so that, on driving the stem into the sleeve, the shoulders c c will bear against the ends 'of the pieces D and D', andthe wholeof the parts will become so tightly wedged together as to be equivalent to a solid swage e On'referring to lig, 2, it will be seen that the sides of the slot in the sleeve are notched at the points-y,`
so that there are, in the end of the instrn1ncnt,t'wo
The instrument having been so adjustedtto the tooth of a saw that the point ofthe latter penetrates one of the recesses, the end, a, of the stem is struck repeated blows 'with a hammer, nntilthe end ofthe tooth is so" far upset as to fill the recess, which thus determines the shape and width of the cutting-point.
But one piece, D, may be-used, as shown ing. 5,
in which case there will be but one recess.
I prefer two, however, as described above.
I claim as my invention, and desire to lsecure by Letters Patent- A sleeve, having recesses y y, and fitted to-a stem, and to a detachable die, substantiallyas vand for the purpose described l In testimony whereof, I have signedmy name to this specification, in the presence oi' twosubscribing witnesses.
EDWARD HAMLIN.
