-Be it known that I, HERMAN AHEEND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had .to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon., which form a part of this specification.
The present invention relates generally to improvements in locks which are especially adapted for use with trunks, coat-cases, and the like, and the invention refers more particularly to a novel construction of lock for trunks and the like, comprising a lower faceplate and main boX or casing containing the lock mechanism and an upper plate, which is separable from the lower plate and is provided with a spring-actuated hasp or catch adapted to be brought in locked engagement with the lock mechanism automatically without the use of a key, but being disengaged therefrom only by means of a key.
My present invention has for its principal object to provide a lock, knownas a tumbler-lock, of the character and operating in the manner hereinafter more fully set forth, which shall be neat, strong, and durable and shall be self-locking, whereby the lock is especially adapted for use with trunks. Thus with trunks when the tumbler mechanism of the lock is actuated by means of a key the spring hasp or catch is released from engagement with a slide-bolt, its spring automatically forcing the hasp outwardly to permit the lid of the trunk to be raised. At the same time the tumbler mechanism and slidebolt are held in their fully-operated and unlocked position by the action of a springplate. As soon as the lid is again closed the spring-actuated hasp or holding-catch can be pushed in engagement with said spring-plate, thereby releasing the tumbler mechanism and slide-bolt, which are thus automatically brought in their self-locking relation with the hasp or holding-catch.

Referring now to the several figures of the drawings, tliefreference character 1 indicates a portion of the box or body of a trunk or the IOO like, 2 a portion of its lid, and 3 is a part of the usual valance which is secured about the marginal edge portion of the lid.
The reference character 5 indicates the lower face-plate of the lock, the same being provided with perforations for fasteningscrews 4 or other means, such as rivets, for securing the face-plate upon the front of the trunk box or body. The said lower faceplate is provided with a keyhole 6 and a receiving-opening 7 for the reception of the IIO holding or retaining portion of the hasp, which is connected with an upper face or hasp plate 8 in the manner to be presently described. Connected with said face or hasp plate 8 is an outwardly-extending member or element 9, forming, with said face-plate 8, a chamber 10, provided in the bottom with an opening 11.
The tace or hasp plate 8 and its parts is secured in its operative position by means of screws 12 or any other suitable fastening devices.
Movably connected with the ,upper faceplate is a hasp 13, the same consisting of a cross-bar 14, having a cam-shaped portion 15, said bar 14 extending across the chamber 10 and having its opposite ends projecting from suitable openings 16 in the opposite side walls of the member or element 9.
Connected with each tree end portion of the bar 14 are arms or members 17, formed with a connecting portion 18, which provides a suitable iinger-piece and is made upon its back with a holding or retaining portion 19, adapted to enter the receiving-opening 7 in the lower face-plate 5.
A spring 20 is arranged within the chamber 10 with its central curved portion 21 bearing, under normal conditions, when the holding or retaining portion 19 is in engagement with the slide-bolt of the lock mechanism, as will hereinafter appear, forcibly against the cam-shaped portion 15 of the bar 14, as indicated in Fig. 3 of the drawings, but said spring 2O automatically forcing or springing the hasp 13 to the position shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings as soon as its holding or retaining portion 19 is released from engagement with the slide-bolt of the lock mechanism, owing to the pressure of the spring upon the cam portion 15 of the bar 14, whereby a slight rotative movement of the hasp is produced.
The lower Jface-plate 5 is formed with an enlargement 22 and an upwardly-extending post or lug 23, which enters the opening 1 1 to prevent distortion of the parts when secured in their respective positions upon the trunkbody and the lid.
Suitably secured upon the back of the lower face-plate 5is a suitably-constructed box or casing 24, preferably by means of perforated ears 25 and screws 26, 'substantially as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The said box or casing 24 is provided upon its back with a key-receiving post 27 in alinement with the keyhole 6 in the plate 5, said back being provided also with posts 28, 29, 30, and 31.
Slidably arranged between the two posts or studs 28 and 29 is a slide-bolt 32, having the oppositely-placed and longitudinally-extending slots or open portions 33 and 34, respectively embracing the posts 28 and 29. Said slide bolt or plate 32 is recessed, as at 35, for the engagement of the tongue 37 'of a key 36 with the said bolt or plate 32 for moving it in the direction of the arrow i/ in Fig. 6 of the drawings against the action of a spring 38, which has its coils arranged upon the post 31 and its end portions 39 and 40, respectively, in engagement with an edge 41 of the bolt or plate 32 and the inner wall of the box or casing 24. Near its opposite end and contiguous to its slot or open portion 34 the slide -plate or bolt 32 is provided with an upwardly-projecting stud or lug 42, forming a stop, for the purposes to be presently more Yfully described. Upon its upper edge the said slide plate or bolt 32 has an upwardly and slightly outwardly projecting member 43, which is formed with a forwardly and longitudinally extending linger 44. Under normal conditions the said finger extends over the freely-movable end portion 46 of a flat spring-plate 45, which plate is secured at its opposite end, by means of a rivet 46, to the inner face of the back of the box or casing 24.
Oscillating upon the post or stud 28 is one, two, or more tumblers 47, each tumbler being provided at the end opposite from its point oi' pivotal support with a longitudinally-extending slot or opening 48 and a cutaway or recessed part 49. In a slot 50 or otherwise secured to the opposite end of each tumbler is a spring 51, each spring having its 'liree end portion 52 in engagement with the post or stud 30. rl`he purpose of these springs is to force each tumbler, under normal conditions, in a downward direction, so that the oi'liset formed by the cut-away part 49 of each tumbler will be in engagement with the stud or lug 42 of the slide plate or bolt 32,whereby the parts are held in their normally inoperative positions, as will be clearly evident.
Having thus described the general construction and arrangements of the various parts of my novel construction of self-locking lock, l will now briefly describe the operations of the several parts.
Suppose the holding or retaining portion 19 ot the hasp 13 has entered the receivingopening 7 in the lower face-plate5 and has depressed the free end portion of the springplate 45 to the position indicated in Fig. 3 oi the drawings, at which time the iinger 44 of the slide plate or bolt 32 has entered into its locked or holding engagement with the member 19 of the hasp 13, and it is desired to unlock the parts to bring the hasp into its released position. (Shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings.) As soon as the inserted key is turned from the position shown in Figs. 5 and 9 of the drawings successively to that in Fig. 6 and finally to that illustrated in Fig` 7 of the drawings the tumblers are raised sufficiently to disengage the oiiset of each tumbler free from the stud or lug 42 of the slide plate or IIO ISO
bolt 32. The key thus moves the slide-plate in the direction of the arrow y, thereby withdrawing the finger 44 from its holding engagement with the member 19 and the latter being released is forced outwardly, as shown. At the same time the finger 44 is moved away from over the springplate 45 (shown in Fig. 12) to the position indicated in Fig. 13, the end 53 of the finger being thereuponforced in engagement with the end 54 of the spring-plate 45, which end is preferably bent for strength, as shown, or for the purpose of preventing the finger 44 slipping back over said spring-plate when. the latter is made of thin metal. When the parts are in the positions just described, being retained, as indicated in Fig. 7 of the drawings, the key is removed and the lid of the trunk can be opened. To again close the lid of the trunk, all that is necessary is to bring the lid down so that the parts are in the positions shown in Fig. 4, and as soon as the holding or retaining member 19 is again inserted in the opening 7 of the lower face-plate 5 said member 19 again engages the free end portion of the spring-plate 45 and releases the end of the finger 44 from the end of the plate 45, as will be clearly understood. In this manner all the parts of the lock mechanism return to their normal initial positions (indicated in Fig. self-locking lock has been produced, which is very simple in its construction and most effective in its operation.

A self-closing lock comprising a lower face-plate and a boX upon said plate, said faceplate being provided with a keyhole and receiving-opening, combined with an upper face-plate and an outwardly-movable springhasp connected therewith, said hasp having an engaging or holding portion adapted to enter the receiving-opening in said lower face-plate, combined with a spring-controlled slide-plate and a laterally-extending finger on said plate said finger being arranged directly back of the receiving-opening and being normally in retaining engagement with the engaging or holding portion of the hasp, a tumbler movable upon said slide-plate, a spring connected with said tumbler, and means on said tumbler normally in engagement with the slide-plate for retaining said slide-plate and tumbler normally in immovable relation, until released by a key, and a rearwardly-depressible means in said lockcasing having a portion in holding engagement with the linger of said slide-plate when said tumbler has beenactuated, and adapted to be disengaged therefrom by the engaging or holding portion of the hasp when it enters of the hasp 13,
- the receiving-opening in the lower face-plate and depresses said means, .thereby automatically returning said slide bolt and tumbler to their normal initial positions with 5 of the drawings) and a the finger of the slide-bar in locked engagement with the engaging or holding member of the hasp, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. A self-closing lock comprising a lower face-plate and a box upon said'plate, said face-plate being provided with a keyhole and receiving-opening, combined with an upper face-plate and an outw ardiy-movable springhasp connected therewith, said hasp having an engaging or holding portion adapted to enter the receiving-opening in said lower face-plate, combined with a spring-controlled slide-plate and a laterally-extending finger on said plate said finger being arranged directly back of the receiving-opening and being normally in retaining the engaging or holding portion of the hasp, a tumbler movable upon said slideplate, a spring connected with said tumbler, and means on said tumbler normally in engagement with the slide-plate for retaining said slide plate and tumbler normally in immovable relation, until released by a key, and a rearwardly-depressible spring-plate in said lock-casing having a portion in holding engagement with the finger of said slideplate when said tumbler has been actuated, and adapted to be disengaged therefrom by the engaging or holding portion of the hasp when it enters the receiving-opening in the lower face-plate and depresses said springplate, thereby automatically returning said slide-bolt and tumbler to their normal initial positions with the finger of the slide in locked' engagement with the engaging or holding member of the hasp, substantially as and forv the purposes set forth.

The combination, with a slide plate or bolt and tumbler of a lock mechanism, and a key for releasing and operating said slide plate or bolt and tumbler, a laterally-extending retaining or holding finger on said slide plate or bolt, of a rearwardly-depressible retaining spring-plate secured at its one end and its other end being movable, said movable end of the spring-plate being adapted to be brought in holding engagement with said finger when said slide-plate and tumbler are moved into their operated positions, for retaining said slide plate or bolt and tumbler in their operated positions until said retaining spring-plate is disengaged from said finger of the slide-plate, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

The combination, With a lock-easing provided With posts 28, 29, 30 and 31, of a slide plate or bolt having slotted end portions for slidably arranging said plate or bolt upon said posts 28 and 29, and a stop-lug near one end of said slide-plate, a spring upon said post 3l in engagement With said slide-plate, a tumbler pivotally arranged upon said post 28 having a portion normallyT in engagement With said stop-lug, a spring connected With said tumbler and in engagement With the post 30, a key for releasing and operating said slide plate or bolt and tumbler, a retaining spring-plate secured at its one end to said look-casing and its other end being movable, said movable end of the springplate being adapted to be brought in holding engagement With said slide plate or bolt When said plate and tumbler are moved into their operated positions, for retaining said slide plate or bolt and tumbler in their operated positions until said retaining springplate is disengaged from said slide-plate,

The combination, With a lock-casing provided with posts 28, 29, 3() and ,31, of a slide plate or bolt having slotted end p0rtions for slidably arranging said plate or bolt upon said posts 28 and 29, and a stop-lug near one end of said slide-plate, a spring upon said post 31 in engagement with said slideplate, a tumbler pivotally arranged upon said post 28 having a portion normally in engagement With said stop-lug, a spring connected With said tumbler and in engagement With the post 30, a key for releasing and operating said slide plate or bolt and tumbler,
a retaining or holding finger on said slide plate or bolt, a retaining spring-plate secured at its one end and at its other end being movable7 said movable end of the spring-plate being adapted to be brought in holding engagement With said finger when said slideplate and tumbler are moved into their operated positions, for retaining said slide plate or bolt and tumbler in their operated positions until said retaining spring-plate is disengaged Jfrom said finger oi the slide-plate, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

The combination, with a lock-casing provided with posts 28, 29 30 and 31, of a slide plate or bolt having slotted end portions ior slidably arranging said plate or bolt upon said osts 28 and 29, and a stop-lug near one end o said slide-plate, a spring upon said post 3l in engagement With said slideplate, a tumbler pivotally arranged upon said post 28 having a portion normally in engagement with said stop-lug, a spring connected With said tumbler and in engagement with the post 30, a key for releasing and operating said slide plate or bolt and tumbler, a retaining or holding finger on said slide plate or bolt, a retaining spring-plate secured at its one end and at its other end being movable, a reinforcing portion upon the movable end of said spring-plate, said reinforcing portion being adapted to be brought in holding engagement With said iinger When said slide-plate and tumbler are moved into their operated positions, for retaining said slide plate or bolt and tumbler in their operated' positions until said retaining reinforcing portion of the spring-plate is disengaged from said ringer of the slide-plate, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
