To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CAssIUs M. C. KIRK, a l
citizen ofthe United States, and a resident of N alicotta, in the county of Pacific and State of Washington, have invented a new and Improved l/Vrench, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact descri tion.
This invention has for its o ject to provide a wrench simple in construction, effective in operation, and durable in use, adapted to be quickly adjusted to clamp objects of various sizes.
Such objects I accomplish by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which drawings like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench embodying my invention, showing the parts in condition for adjusting the movable head of the wrench. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the device shown in Fig. 1, showing the parts clamped together. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. tion taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a transverse section taken on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2.
As illustrated in the drawings, 1 represents a jaw xedly secured to one end of ashank 2, which is preferably provided on its opposite sides with longitudinal grooves 3, adapted to receive corresponding flanges 4, formed on the lower portion of a sleeve 5, which extends longitudinally of the shank 2 and serves as the upper or outer, member of the handle of the wrench. The op osite end of the shank 2 is provided with a co lar 6, adapted to receive the sleeve 5 and hold said sleeve in sliding engageinent with the shank 2. The sleeve 5 is provided with a jaw 7, iixedly secured thereto and has a recess 8, adapted to receive the offset end 9 of an auxiliary shank 10, which is pivoted to the head 7 by means of a pivotpin l1, as shown in Fig'. 2. A11 adjustingscrew 12 is rotatably mounted upon the auxiliary shank 10 and provided with a head 13, which bears against a shoulder 14, formed on the inner end of the shank 10. The inner end 12a of the screw 12 is preferably made plain, so that the screw may be releasedrom engagement with the shank 2 by a slight dro of the shank 10, and the edges of the threa s of the screw 12 are rounded to enable the screw to readily engage and be released from the threads of the shank 2. The
Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse secadjusting-screw 12 is held in place by means of straps 15 and 15a, which extend over the ends of the adjusting-screw and are secured tothe auxiliary shank 10 by rivets or in any other suitable manner. The auxiliary shank 10 is provided with a longitudinal groove adapted to receive the lower portion of the adjusting-screw 12 and is locked in engagement with the main shank of the wrench by means of a keeper 16, pivotally secured by means of a stud-screw 17 or otherwise to the end of the shank 2 and provided with a curved slot 18, adapted to engage the end of the adjusting-screw 12 and hold said parts together, as shown in Fig. 2. The upper portion of the adjusting-screw 12 engages corresponding segmental threads formed in the lower edge of the shank 2, by means of which the movable jaw 7 may be accurately adjusted relatively to the fixed jaw. When it is desired to adjust the clamping-jaws t0 an object, the pivoted shank 10 and screw mounted thereon are released from engagement with the shank 2, as shown in Fig. 1, when the sleeve 5 may be quickly moved along the shank 2 until the jaws are brought in proper relation to each other. When the jaws have been so adjusted, the auxiliary shank 10 is locked in engagement with the main shank 2, as hereinbefore described, and if a more accurate adjustment of the jaws is desired it may be obtained by operating the adjusting-screw 12 by means of a handwheel secured thereto.
If desired, the iixed jaw 1 of the wrench may be provided with a serrated surface 20, curved or inclined toward a central point, so as to adapt said jaw to clamp a gas-pipe, bolt, or other cylindrical object. A detachable plate 21 may be provided with a serrated face adapted to engage the corresponding face of the jaw 1 and be connected therewith by means of a lip 22, which is secured to said jaw by a detachable screw or stud 28. The detachable plate 21 may, if desired, be provided with a cutting edge 21a, adapted to be fed against the surface of a flue or gas-pipe by means of the screw 12, and thereby serve as a pipe-cutter.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is`

2. A wrench having a main shank provided on one end with a lixed jaw, and on the opposite end with a collar, a sleeve adapted to serve as a handle member having a sliding engagement with said shank and collar, and provided with a jaw, an auxiliary shank pivoted to said last-named jaw adapted to serve as a handle member, and provided on its inner end with a shoulder, and a feed-screw rotatably mounted at its ends on said auxiliary jaw adapted to engage the segmental threads formed on the underside of the main shank, and be released from engagement therewith, and provided on its inner end with a head bearing against the shoulder of the auxiliary shank, substantially as shown and described.

A wrench having a main shank provided on one end with a fixed jaw, and on its with a collar, a sleeve adapted to serve as a handle member having a sliding engagement with sald shank and collar, and provided with a jaw, an auxiliary shank pvoted to said last-na1ned jaw, a feed-screw rotatably mounted at its ends on said auxiliary shank, and adapted to engage the segmental threads formed on the under surface of the main shank, and be released from engagement therewith, and means` Jfor locking the main and auxiliary shanks together, sub stantially as shown and described.
4. A wrench having a main shank provided on one end with a fixed jaw, and on the opposite end with a collar, a sleeve adapted to serve as a handle member having a sliding engagement with said shank and collar and provided with a jaw, an auxiliary shank pivoted to said last-named jaw and provided on its inner end with a shoulder, and a feedscrew rotatably mounted at its ends on said auxiliary shank so as to engage segmental threads formed on the inner surface of the main shank, and be released from engagement therewith, bearing at its inner end against the shoulder of the auxiliary shank,
and provided with a hand-wheel at the end of the main and auxiliary Shanks, substantially as shown and described.
