Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom i2: may concern:
Be it known that we, THOMAS DAVID HAM- ILTON, of Cromac Square, Belfast, Ireland, linen manufacturer, JOHN RUsK, of Oromac Square, Belfast, Ireland, linen manufacturer, and WILLIAM AvoNsmE ROBERTSON, of 93 Rathmore street, Belfast, Ireland, mechanic, subjects of the King of Great Britain, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sewing-machines of that class inwhich the needle-b ar is caused to move laterally while the cloth is being fed, so as to produce a zigzag stitch. At present in machines of this class it is usual to operate the needle-bar from the vibrating quadrant of the machine; but under our invent-ion we operate the bar (without the aid of a quadrant) from a special cam or barrel arranged upon the arm of the machine and driven in any suitable manner. This cam or barrel is adapted to actuatea bar which is connected, by means of a universal or other suitable joint, to the needle-bar, so as to operate the same. The said bar is or may be also adapted to be raised and lowered by means of a lever operated by a knee, arm, or foot lever.
In order that our invention may be fully understood, we have hereunto appended explanatory drawings, whereon Figure 1 is an elevation showing one method of carrying out our invention. Fig. 2 is a plan of same. Fig. 3 is an elevation showing a second method of carrying out the invention. Fig. 4 is a plan of same.
In carrying out the invention according to the arrangement illustrated at Figs. 1 and 2 we make the sewing-machine with a plate a, which is fiXed to the arm I), and in the bracket 0/ of the plate is fixed a pin or shaft 0, on which runs freely a face-cam d, driven by means of toothed gear 6 e from the needle-bar-operating shaft f of the machine. The cam d is or may be securely fixed to the toothed Wheel 6 (which also runs freely on the pin 0) by means of set-screws. Jointed, by means of a universal or other suitable joint, to the needle-bar is an operating-rod g, which has at its end a roller h, bearing against the face of the cam 65, thereby causing the rod 9 to have a lateral and longitudinal movement. The roller 72. of the rod g is held in engagement with the cam by means of a spring h, confined between the guide 0 and j a collar 7%, secured to the rod g, as seen 1n 1 Fig. 1, and the rod itself is given a varlable j travel by means of a lifting-rod t, which is bent at its upper end and secured by an eye i to the rod 9 and which can be moved vertically by a knee, arm, or foot lever, the vertical movement being limited by a slotted guide 0 on the'plate a.
In the arrangement shown at Figs. 3 and 4: a tapered barrel-cam d is fitted on a countershaft p, projecting out through the side of the arm and driven from the operating-shaft f by means of bevel-gearing g g. In this arrangement the operating-rod g is of a different shape, and its roller It is pressed against the cam by a spring 8 on the rod between the bracket 8 and a collar 3 on said rod, while it is pressed toward the arm by the action of a spring 1'. s is a guide for guiding the rod g. The rod can in this case be pushed outward or away from the arm and against the action of the spring 1" by means of an arm t at the end of a bar a, carried in bearings y y and capable of being partially turned or rocked by the lifting-rod w, which can be raised by the knee or the arm or foot in any well-known manner.
In Figs. 1 and 2 the face-cam as it revolves pushes the rod 9 to the left hand, while the action of the spring brings it back again, thereby establishing a reciprocating movement which vibrates the needle-bar laterally. The same result is obtained in Figs. 3 and 4 by means of the barrel-cam, which gives the movements in one direction, while the spring 8 gives the movements in the opposite direction. The throw or lateral travel of the rod is in each case regulated by the knee, arm, or foot lever. In Figs. 1 and 2 by actuating the rod t the roller it can be shifted vertically, so as to vary the throw or movement produced by the cam, and thereby vary the lateral movement of the needle-bar. In Figs. 3 and 4 the bar 9 can be. shifted horizontally, so that the roller 71, will work on different parts of the cam, and thereby vary the lat l eral movement of the needle-bar.
'Having now fully described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a sewing-machine, mechanism for moving the needle-bar laterally, the same comprising in combination, a cam, means for rotating the cam, a rod connected with the needle-bar, means on said rod for direct contact With said cam, a spring acting on said rod in opposition to said cam, and means for moving said rod and its cam-contacting melans vertically to vary the throw of the r0 2. In a sewing-machine, mechanism for laterally moving the needle-bar, comprising, in combination, a face-cam, means for supporting the cam, a spur-Wheel connected With the cam, means for rotating said. spur- Wheel, a rod connected with the needle-bar, a roller-on said rod adapted to contact With the face of the cam and a rod connected to the rod aforementioned for the purpose of moving it vertically so that the roller can be acted on by different parts of the cam.
3. The combination in asewing-machine of a spur-pinion on the shaft of the machine, a cam, a spur-Wheel connected With the cam, means for supporting the cam, a rod connected With the needle-bar, a roller at the end of said rod, a guide for the rod, a spring acting on said rod and a second rod connected With the first one and adapted to shift the same to shift said roller on the said rod relatively to the cam with Which it contacts.
