UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACQUES E. BERTIN, OF PARIS, FRANCE.
SEWING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,553, dated March' 16, 1,880. Application lod February 25, 1878. Patented in England, December 3, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, J. E. BERTIN, of Paris, France, haveinvented an Improved Sewing- Machine, of which the following is a specilication.`
This invention relates to an Improvement in. sewing-machines designed especially for sewing gloves;` and it consists in the combination of parts, as hereinafter described, and particularly recited in the claim.
The drawings represent, in Figure 1, a side View; Fig. 2, a plan; Fig. 3, a sectional plan on line A B, Fig. l; Fig. 4t, a detached view.
`O is the driving-shaft, to which power is applied in the usual manner. The cam G on said shaft imparts intermittent reciprocating movement to the rack c, and this, through the pinion a, imparts a ,rotary motion to the circular needle. (Shown in detached view, Fig. 4.) The cam C' imparts a reciprocating motion to the needle-arm d, the path ot' the needle being ina plane parallel with that of the The cam G2 imparts to the arm X a vibratory movement, the arm X carrying a hook which moves in a path substantially at right angles tothe path of the two needles, and so that the two needles and hook operate together to form the stitch, in the usual manner for this class of machines.
A and B are two disks, arranged on vertical shafts o and o2 supported in bearings D D', and to the shafts an intermittent rotary movement is imparted by means of a wheel, L, on
the driving-shaft,having but a single tooth,
anism. The work is passed between them and is fed by this intermittent rotary movement.
.The bearing D is formed on one arm, q, of a lever hung below, the other arm extending to the opposite end ot' the machine, where it is forced down by a spring bearing vertically Aupon it, the tendency of which is Ato force theA disk A towardthe disk B, and so gripe the work between the two, the spring yielding for variable thickness. At the spring end of the lever attachment is made with a pedal, so that. the operator may raise that end of the lever to open the disks whenever he desires so to do.
The guide f is a linger extending over or near the point where the stitch is made, so as to govern that portion of the work vertically.
In connection with the guide f is a second tin ger, g, which lies close down upon the disk and against the work opposite' where the needle enters, and so as to resist the thrust of the needle, and which tends to stretch or draw the leather out of shape.
I am aware that two feedin g-disks have been used to present the work to the stitch-making mechanism of a sewing-machine, and therefore do not broadly claim such disk as of my invention.
I claim- 4 The combination of a stitch-making mechanism, the two feeding-disks A B, and the ngers fg, substantially as and for the` purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed myname to this speciication before two subscribing witnesses.
