SEWING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,954, dated March 30, 1880.
Application filed September 15, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDDY T. THOMAS, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Sewing -Machines, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
This invention relates to sewing-machines; and it consists in the combination, with a vibrating shuttle carrying or moving arm, of an oscillating and reciprocating lever, as hereinafter set forth and claimed, set in motion by a crank, the said lever, by its peculiar movements, enabling the shuttle-carrier and its shuttle to be moved by a crank in such time with relation to the movement of the needle as is requisite and necessary to sew leather,
wherein the shuttle must be in its most forward position as the stitch is completed 5 or, in other words, it is desirable in this my invention to move the needle and shuttle as in the well-knownHowe and other machines employed for leather-stitching.
My invention also consists in the combination, with the main shaft of the machine, its driving-pulley, and a locking device, of a bobbin-winder and connecting devices between it and the said driving-pulley, whereby, by moving the bobbin-winder into operative position to wind a bobbin, the driving-pulley will be loosened upon the said main shaft, all constructed as hereinafter set forth and claimed; also, in the combination, with the needle-bar, of a guard or thread-shield, constructed and arranged as hereinafter described, to prevent the needle-thread from becoming soiled; also, in the combination, with the needle-bar and stud thereon, of a partially-twisted rod and eye or loop to act as a take-up for the thread,
all constructed as hereinafter set forth and Fig. 4, an end view of Fig. 3, the driving-pul-- ley being removed; Fig. 5, a portion of the head of the machine, with a part broken away to show the take-up Fig. 6, a top view of Fig. 5; Fig. 7 a cross-section of the twisted shaft of the take-up Fig. 8, a side elevation of the machine; Fig. 9, a modification of the shuttle-moving parts.
The machine taken as the basis for these my improvements is that known as the Home machine, and being well known need not be specifically described, other than to say that the main rotary shaft of the machine extends through the overhanging arm, and by a camgrooved disk moves the needle-bar, the said main shaft having a beveLgear, which engages a bevel-gear upon a vertical shaft having at its lower end the crank 5, which actuates the shuttle-driving mechanism.
I have omitted the feed and several other well-known things as not of my invention.
The shuttlecarrying arm I), having its fulcrum at c on a stud attached to the usual clothsupporting plate or bed (I, has at its outer end the steel or other usual shuttle-carrier, e, to engage and move the shuttle f, and attached to said arm at 2 is a slotted arm, 9, its slot being at 3. About this same stud cvibrates and reciprocates a lever, 71-, slotted at 4. This lever-is connected at its rear end with the crankpin 5, held preferably on an adjustable block, t', connected with the rotary disk 7' at the lower end of the usual vertical shaft k, the
lower end of which is shown in Fig. 1. This lever h is at its outer end provided with a stud, l, (preferably aroller-stud,) which enters the slot 3 in the arm 9, and, as the crank-pin 5 travels at regular speed in a circle, the said lever, by its vibrations and reciprocations, causesthe stud Z to impart to the shuttle-carrier a variable motion, and especially moving it so that it reaches its most forward position and draws upon the shuttle-thread as the needle-thread is drawn taut to complete the stitch, as is customary for leather-stitching. Bythese devices the time occupied by the shuttle in passing through the loop of needle-thread is but a small fraction of the time of each revolution of the disk j, and for such passage of the shuttle the crank-pin moves only from its full to its dotted line position, Fi 1, in the direction of the arrow.
The connection between the crank-pin and lever h is kept packed and close by any suitable means.
The usual main rotating shaft p of the ma chine has placed loosely upon it a drivingwheel, q, with belt-receiving groove 6, a steel plate or disk, 7, perforated at one or more places to receive the locking device r, being connected with the rear side of the said wheel q.
The locking device (shown as a springpressed pin provided with a grooved head, 8) is adapted to slide in a hub, 8, fixed upon the shaft 10.
The head 8 of the locking device is engaged by a flange or projection, 9, of a loose sleeve, it, connected with the upper end of a lever, at, having an inclined projection, 10, or equivalent, to be acted upon by a slide, 10, slotted at 12, guided by a pin, 13, and connected by a link, 14, with the frame of the bobbin-winder 00, of any usual construction, it having a pulley, 15, to receive the machine driving-belt.
\Vhen a shuttle-bobbin is to be wound the bobbin winder is turned down, lifting the slide 10 until it meets the incline 10, when the arm or lever 20 is, with the sleeve t, moved longitudinally along the main shaft 1), and the locking device 1* is withdrawn from and so as to leave the pulley q loose on the shaft, to be run and not turn the said shaft.
To facilitate the introduction of the needlethread into the needle-eye, at the top of the needle-bar a a diagonal slot, 17, is cut, and the said slot is intersected at each end by a slot formed at right angles thereto, as at 16.
The needle-thread carried by the needle-bar is very apt to become soiled wit-h oil. To obviate this I have placed about the said needle-bar, above the head a a guard or shield, 0 shown as made of a single piece of wire, connected with the head by a screw, 20.
The take-up is composed of a partially-twisted and flattened rod or bar, h and an eyepiece, h the ends orjournal parts h of the bar resting in bearings made as screws, and therefore adjustable, to compensate for wear. This bar h has its body partially twisted from its center 19 toward each end, as in Fig. 5, leaving a smooth winding-surface at its rear side to be acted upon by the flat-headed stud 41, attached at the front side of the needle-bar (t the said stud always remaining in contact with the flat side of the said bar, and moving the take-up positively both when giving thread to the needle and when drawing up the thread.
In Fig. 9 I have shown a modification of the shuttleactuating mechanism. In said figure the rear part of the shuttle-carrier is bored to receive the vibrating and reciprocating part h, therein shown as a round bar.
I claim-- 1. The combination of a vibrating shuttle holding and moving arm having a fixed bearing, a lever loosely connected to said arm to move longitudinally with relation to it, and a crank and suitable rotating mechanism to impart an oscillating and reciprocating motion .to said lever, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a vibrating shuttle moving arm, an oscillating and reciprocating lever connected to said arm by an extensible joint to drive the shuttle in a curved race, and mechanism to operate the said arm and lever, substantially as specified.
3. The combination of the main shaft, a wheel, g, a plate, 7, having holes therein, a hub, s, and a sliding pin, r, with a flanged sleeve, 26, connected with the head of pin 1', a lever, a, its incline 10, the slotted slide 20, the pin 13, a link, 14, and a bobbin-winder, to operate substantially as specified.
4. The combination, with the needle-bar and head of the machine, of the horizontal guard or thread-shield attached to the upper part of the head of the machine and surrounding the needlebar below its eye, substantially as described.
5. The twisted take-up bar k having the eye h in combination with adj ustable or com pensating bearing-screws h, the adjustable screw 41, the needle-bar, the sewing-machine head, and operating mechanism, substantially as shown.
