Description

No, 850,561. PATENTED @3.16, 19o?,
' N, BREAKENRIDGB.
DELIVERY CASE PORBOTTLED GOODS.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 10. 1906.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
, To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, NELSONLBREKEN- RIDGE, a citizen of the United States, residing VIo ' at Redlands, in the county of San Bernardino and Siate ofCalifornia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Delivery-Cases for Bottled Goods, of which the following is a specification.
f My invention relates to cases for delivering bottled goods, such' as milk, *where the seller delivers thc full bottle and receives back from the purchaser the empty bottle, and the object thereof to provide a case in which the vender may lock the full bottle of goods in the case and take therefrom the empty bottle and the custom(` runlocks the door of the com- Vpa'rt'mcntcontaining 'the full bottle by putting 'the cmpiyboiile into the case.` l accomplish this omrci by the mcchamsm described herein and illustranod u1 the accompanymg draaingfnhich is a perspective View of a delivery-caney embodying my invention with parts 'broken aw ay for clearness of illustration. f
In the drawing, 1 is a case, preferably of wood, which has two compartments 2 and 3 therein. Compartment 3 is smaller than compartment 2, and the bottom4 thereof'is a short distance above the bottom 5 of coinpartment 2, hich compartment extends under compartment 3. One side of the case forms a door 6, which is provided with a lock 7. .'l`his1door when closed and locked forms the side closure Yl'or the adjacent openings of' com'par;mams 2 and 3. Compartment 3 is also providtd ith another opening, which is closed hy a door S, which has hinges 9 at the bottom ilurto'l. l)'oor 8 has a lug mat/the iop and on the inside thereof 'which lug has an aperture 11 extending therethrough, into which is rrmivcd the downturned end of thelocking-bar l when door S is in its locked posi ltion, said, har being the means by which `the door is locken. Bar 12 is carried by a platform 13, which is secured by hinges 14 to a support 15 on'the bottom of the case.` As shown in the drawings, one end of this platform, which. ior purposes ol designation I will term the outer" end, projects beneath compartment 3, which l will term the full-bottle compartment, and the same is a littleI wider than compartment 3, so that lthe locking-bar is carried outside of the compartment and e-X- Vtends overand down through the top of the compartment, as shown. .The outer end of Specicaton of Letters v Patent. Application filed July 10.1906. Serial No.'325,532i
'zatented Aprl 16, 19.07.
platform 13 carries aslide-bar 16, tothe top 'of which is secured the locking-slide 17, Whic pass throufrh slots 1 in the locking-slide and are securedc in the wa l of compartment 3. In
is vertically movable upon pins 18, which lpins the top of thecase is an opening which is large` enough for the passage therethrough of' the bottle 20. This openmg is closed by a door 21, which is connected by hinges 22 tothe ltop yof thecase so that it may siii ing downwardly and inwardly. A coiled spring 23 normally l holds this door in its closed position. At the rear `end and on the lower sidethereof and se-A cured to this door is a lug or bar 24, behind which slide 17 moves whenever a bottle rests upon platform 13, as shown in the. drawing, thereby lockingfdoor 21.
'I will describe my delivery-case as applied to delivering bottled milk. It will be understood that the, delivery-case is securely fastened at the residnnce of the-0l stomer in a convenient positie, for access'liy the milkman, who carries the key to lock 7. When the milkma-n desires to deliverV a bottle of milk to his customer, lle unlocks door 7 and puts the full bottle of milk in compartment 3, takes out the empty bottle from conipart` ment 2, and locks the door. empty bottle is removed from compartment 2 tlc outer end of )latform 13 drops, tlerebyA carrying the end oi locking-bar 12 into lug 10 and locking door 8 against being opened. 'At the same time locking-slide 17 drops down below lug' 24, tliereby unlocking door 21. The customer desiring the full bottle of milk brings an empty bottle totlle ease and drops As soon as the it'into. compartnient 2 by pushing door 21 downwardly and inwardly. As soon as the bottle llas passed tle door spring 23 returns door 21 to its closed position. 'lle bottle passes on and rests upon tle inner end of` platform 13, and tle weight thereof clevatesthe outer end of tlle platform, thereby carrying the lockingbar out' of engagementwth lug 10, so that the customer can open door 8 :no
and take out the full bottle. At the same. time tle locking-slide 17 is moved upwardly back lof lug 24, so that door 21cannot be opened, vand the empty bottle is'loeked in the .case andieannot, be removed tlerei'r ,except by tlle milkman, who parries the `vitos lock 7..
case wlich insures the delivery of l bottle of milk to the vcustomer an l the enpty milk-,bottle to the milkxnan and ptcygnts any By tliis construction I 2 i audaci dispute between them, as the custdmer mustdeliver into the case an empty bottle beforel --hecan take therefrom the full bottle, andthe i ,fg iilkman is always insured the delivery of' 5 the empty bottle, as it is locked in the case until he unlocks it to lput a full bottle therein.
7^ Havingdescribed my invention, what .claim as new is-'- 1. A. case for delivering bottled goods containing two compartments having adjacent 'I "j openings, and also having separated openings; 'a single closure for-said adjacent openlin'gs; means tolock said single closure; elc-vl eures for said separated openings; and 'mech-l anism fqrvlpckmg said separated closures,
said mechanism being arranged to alteri' natelylo'ck one and unlock the other of said f ,Separated closures.
' 2. y A case having' two compartmen is thererzo in, one of which 1s smaller than, the other, Baidcompartments having adjacent open;- .."ings;a y door secured to sald caseadapted lto .close said adjacent "openings; a luck for said' door; an independent' door for the smaller ofV yircsai'd compartments; an independent door for the larger lof said compartments; and'mechf i fhls'in Within the larger of said compartments ,to alternately lock and unlock the independ- Aent doors of said compartments, said mechangq ism being operatable by a bottle placedwithwv inthe larger of the compartments, to unlock 'A the-door ofi the smaller compartment andr lcclr the door of the larger compartment. 3. The herein-described lloottlesdelivery case having two compartments therein pro# vided withv adjacent openings, one of said compartments being larger than. the other v. and projecting below the smaller compart ment; a door provided with a'lock, said' doorbeing adapted to close the adjacent openings of said compartments; an independent door` for the smaller of said compartments; hinges secured to the 'bottom'of latter door; a lug having an aperture therein secured to the top of said last door; a door having a lug -on the lower face ythereof at the rear in the top of the .case opening downwardly and `in wardly mtogthe larger of said compartments;
a pivote'd platform at the bottom of the' larger4 compartment; and a locking-bar and a locking-slide carried; by the outer end of said platform', said bar being adapted to lock
